Development Showcase / Re: Blah songs with Nifflas kit!
« on: February 10, 2013, 02:24:00 »
Wow!!!  Nice job.  These are some really kickass tracks.  You've got a lot of talent!  Your friends are idiots if they don't listen to this stuff.  My friends don't listen to my stuff either, though it might just be because it sucks  X)

I'm really impressed though.  These tracks all have a really strong style and sense of authorship to them.

I use Fruity Loops as well, though I haven't heard of Superior Drummer.  The percussion in your songs is definitely really nice and strong so I looked it up.  It's a bit out of my price range at the moment though haha :P

I did notice a few tracks sounded a tiny bit squashed, presumably due to the compression.  Just might be one of those things to watch out for.  I thought the reverb was fine though.  I'm a mastering newb though so be careful taking anything I say to heart :]

I wonder what you might think of this song that I did a while back (also using some Nifflas samples)?  I'm concerned about the mixing/mastering since I'm still really new to it and it's such a fine-tuney thing to get the hang of.

---edit---

Mr Fish, your song's really cool as well!  It has a nice feel to it.  The percussion was really good.  It'd be perfect for some sort of adventure game, I can imagine climbing a mountain and overlooking a huge expanse hearing this.  My only suggestion, especially for listening to the song on its own, is that it might have been nice to play around with the chord progression a bit, if you can find a nice way to segue out of the current four-measure pattern.

Nice!  I always had trouble being expressive on electronic keyboards, but you seem to have no problem with it :]

Spaceship with a Mace (multiplayer) / Re: Spaceship with a Mace
« on: February 02, 2013, 00:21:03 »
Awesome.  I played this three-player last night and we had a blast.  Thanks for posting this SiamJai!  Nice job Nifflas!

I found the music pretty neat.  The drumbeat sounds generative, almost Aphex Twin-like.  I feel like it must be partially randomized since, if the music was done during a gamejam, there probably wouldn't be time to lay out those beats by hand.  If it is procedural I wonder what software was used for the music?

Howdy! I'm a big fan of Lackadaisium, so it's cool to see you here.

Haha really??  That's awesome!  I've actually created a newer version of Lackadaisium that has a few scenes cleaned up but, more importantly, has a lot of easter eggs added to it (something I always wanted originally).  I was trying to make it into IGF this year.  Didn't quite make the cut, but at least I have a cool new updated version of the game.  I need to get around to releasing that soon.  As always though the question is figuring out how to get people to play it, haha.

It's not as friendly forum as this one but then I've never found any other forums that are ;)

Yep, that's been my experience with TIGSource as well.  Granted, last time I visited there was years ago.  But there did seem to be a certain snobbish air over there, as if being members of the secret super-cool indie game community entitles them to only the finest free games.  I should probably still be maintaining an account over there.  I just feel like I'd have to "don my armor" when I post something there.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Development Showcase / Isopark (game)
« on: January 30, 2013, 20:35:08 »
Hi,

Sorry to pimp my game right after I join the forum  :P2

But I just released a free game, which I think Nifflas fans might appreciate.

Download/video

Isopark is an ambient isometric platformer in which the player's health and stamina are key.  If people seem to like it, we might expand it into a bigger game.

Me and my artist girlfriend Liana Sposto made it for the Global Game Jam recently.  If you get a chance to try it out, let me know what you think.  I already know there are some issues with telling where things are in 3D space (mostly due to my hasty/sloppy level design).  I also know about the slight z-sorting glitch with the player's shadow and feet (didn't have time to fix it).

Thanks for playing!

Your game looks neat Microbex!  Nice graphics.  Does the gyroscope fall over if you bump into walls enough?  Might be neat if you have to keep spinning it up at checkpoints or it winds down after a while.

I am a freelance programmer but have been looking to get into freelance music as well since it's something I enjoy.  I could potentially make some music for you and charge much less than I do for programming, as I have less experience with it.

I think my style is a little "punchier" than the song you used, but I can do any style you like provided it's within my capabilities.

My soundcloud (some songs there are unpolished, "Star Mites" is Nifflas-inspired though)

You can email admin {{at}} ultimatewalrus {{dot}} com if you have any questions about that.

About Nifflas' Website and Forum / Hello!
« on: January 30, 2013, 19:30:41 »
Hi, I just created an account and thought I'd introduce myself.  I am an indie developer and a long time fan of Nifflas' games.  When I played the original Knytt it completely changed the way I look at games and the emotional impact that they can have.  It's been a huge influence on the way I design my own games.  And since Knytt, the other Nifflas games I've tried have been pure magic.

I've always been looking for a small, friendly community in which I can get critiques on my creative projects as well as share critiques on the work of others.  I thought this might be that community since how could a forum of Nifflas fans be anything but creative and friendly :]

I put a link to my games in my sig in case anyone is curious :]  Currently they are all free though I would like to try and make a living off them someday.
