Title: Stuck? (Here there be SPOILERS, obviously.)
Post by: Hmpf on January 07, 2013, 00:41:18
I'm stuck in a couple of places, and wondering if it's just me trying something the wrong way, or me being too slow, or the game wanting me to do something else first. Just so I don't keep trying futile things a million times, maybe someone can tell me if I'm doing something fundamentally wrong/too slow, or if I should come back later?

First example: see attached image. Should I be able to get all the way through that screen, and halfway through the one above it, with the green flower? Because no matter how hard I try, I can only get to the top edge of that screen before the flower's power (ha: flower power!) expires. But the next screen seems to require the same power.

Three things to remember: You can pick up a powerup while you are a ball, you can also pick one up while you are a floating energy thing, and you are under no obligation to use a powerup the moment you pick it up. I can't remember that exact screen, but it looks like you could go about it one of several ways.

You might be able to make it if you take the power-up, fly as far upwards as you can, transform into a ball, land on the power-up to get it again, and bounce back up to the top of the screen?

And you can climb walls while holding the powerup, just make sure the powerup doesn't run out before using it to maximize the usage time and thus going the farthest possible.

@sergiocornaga: I'm going to have to try that, that sounds just about possible.

@LPChip: But how would climbing the walls help here?

@TheDarkNerd: I have to use the powerup quickly because it expires too soon as it is!

Aaaanyway. Kinda given up on this one for now, though I'll try it again some other day. Today I ran to another part of the map and, predictably, got stuck there. See attached picture... How am I supposed to get to the other side of that hanging spur? My theory is I should let myself fall down from it and transform into a ball on the way down, and then bounce back up and re-transform to a sprite and cling to the wall there. But no matter what I do, the ball doesn't bounce high enough. (And I need to do all this with enough time to spare to use the powerup on the robot once I'm on the other side, of course.)

Just remember to not fall from a too low point and hold Up when you touch the ground.

Thanks! Will try...

BTW, just accidentally ran into the screen from the previous post again, and this time managed to get it right. :)

I continue to kind of suck at this but am enjoying it all the same. Here's today's problem: how do I get to the top of the screen? My guess is I have to let myself - in bouncy ball form - fall on the tilted surface I indicated in red, and it will bounce me up far enough somehow. However, this remains firmly within the realm of theory, so far - all attempts to actually achieve this have so far been in vain. Am I thinking in the wrong direction? Or is it just me sucking at bouncy ball physics yet again?

I think this is one of those one direction places, where you can only come from the top, and have to go around.

Actually, there should be a hidden path to the right, this will make more sense if you find that.

I know about that passage actually - but couldn't  find any way from there up, if I recall correctly. Hmmmmmmm.....

Oh? But that passage is the key to getting up.

On revisiting said area:

Duh.

:D

(I think I had that passage mixed up with another somewhere else, that didn't contain a powerup.)

Today's problem: see below. I've managed to search all the areas indicated in red for secret passages. I can't imagine how to get up to that shaft's mouth with the powerups provided. I can't transport the yellow one to where I need it, and the blue ones only go sideways, which doesn't seem helpful for going upwards.

It's probably just me missing something really obvious again.

I don't know where that is exactly, but wouldn't it be possible

Oh. Yeah, that should work. Damn, I really need to think harder in this game.

Today's example of why I suck, I'm pretty sure, is not due to a failure to think, but rather a lack of ability at bouncy-ball physics. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there's something I've overlooked/haven't thought of? See image below. Red line indicates the highest arc I've been able to achieve with the bouncy ball. Obviously I need to go higher yet - I want to get to the passage at the top of the screen; I don't know how, though.

I've tried jumping at the long (rightside) incline from the little nook on the top left; I've tried jumping at it from the vertical leftside wall; I've tried jumping directly from the mouth of the tunnel on the left; I've even tried coming from the right, though that immediately seemed less promising, so I abandoned that approach (maybe I should have tried that longer?) By bouncing between the long incline and the vertical wall I can manage to go up higher and higher - up to a point, when the nook at the top of the vertical wall proves distinctly unhelpful, because it's right where I'd need another bit of wall to be to continue my bouncing.

If I recall that correctly, you have to create a horizontal momentum from the screen on the left, then bounce to the small diagonal slope on the top to go down, bounce twice down to go up and on your way up go left a little bit so you can get into the ceiling corridor.
Title: Re: Stuck? (Here there be SPOILERS, obviously.)
Post by: Yonowaaru on January 10, 2013, 22:23:19
The technique I used for such things was basically:

- Approach from the left, then jump and change into a ball
- Keep holding the right button, which helps you slowly move up the slope and gain some momentum
- When you feel you're high enough, quickly switch from the right to the left arrow key just after you've hit the slope.

If done correctly, this should launch you far enough, I think.

This one was tricky. At first I tried and thought it's impossible and it's a way down. Then, when it became clear it's the only way I did it like this:
Start at the left-top corner.
Fall down as a ball.
Bounce off left slope.
Bounce off right slope. (hold Right key to bounce higher)

Hi there,

I'm stuck trying to reach Disorder Portal at 47,29. Double use of red glowing power-up is not enough to reach the upper part of 46,28 room (where a secret path to 47,28 should be)... I'm out of ideas

It actually is enough. Always use the ball power (and hold up) when you hit the ground and grab a new orb, and always use the orb at the highest point of each jump. You'll continue to gain height.

I can get a lot higher with your tips but it stops to gain height at the point where I almost can reach the platform on the right side. Have been trying for an hour or so and still no luck :|

Though I'm not sure what do you mean by saying "and hold up". I'm playing on PS VITA and it doesn't seem that up key on the D-pad has any effect.

Hold the jump key, which makes you bounce, so you bounce as high as possible with the ball before you transform and perform the powerup jump.

Post by: SiamJai on January 12, 2013, 00:56:04
... and when you think you've reached max height, 'steer' to the right slightly at the end. It'll be just enough to get there.

Post by: TheUnfortunate on January 12, 2013, 08:44:13
Nevermind, I reached it. My method to jump up and down until I reach maximum height didn't work though. I checked some guy's gameplay on YouTube and used his method, where he jumps from the left side instead of bouncing up and down. Somehow it worked even though you are falling from smaller height.

I'm still stuck in so, so many places... some of the worst of which for some reason aren't "screencap-able"?!?

Anyway... for now, here's a question that works without a screenshot: I just got the "Herr Igitt" mushroom, but when I try to give it to Ji he/she/it just asks me if I found any mushrooms. There doesn't seem to be any way to give the mushroom away... (Maybe KU is taking "Don't Eat the Mushroom" too seriously?)

LOL, that's a funny take on it!  X) The likely explanation is less imaginative though.

Okay. I'll just have to wait, then, I guess. :-)

Now, here's another problem - a weird one: I can't seem to take screenshots in KU anymore. At all. Which is inconvenient, because I need to post screenshots to ask about places where I'm stuck! Has anyone encountered this problem? What can I do to fix it?

What I get instead of a screenshot of the game is a screenshot of my desktop (which is behind the game, of course).

Are you playing full screen when taking the screenshot? If so, I recommend using a program like fraps to make the screenshots with. There are many. Or alternatively instead of using alt-printscreen, use just printscreen. It'll make a screenshot of your entire desktop so you can cut out the unnecessary bits.

Yeah, I've been playing fullscreen since the beginning. Wasn't even aware there was another option... And until recently taking screenshots worked just fine.

What do you mean by "just use printscreen"? Is there a special key on the keyboard for that? I don't think I have that on my laptop. Or is it one of the F keys or something like that?
Title: Re: Stuck? (Here there be SPOILERS, obviously.)

There's a printscreen button on most keyboards. Could be left out on your laptop indeed if it has less keys, but most have it.

Its usually near the scroll lock and pause-break key. Or if you don't have those either, the insert, delete, home, end, page up and page down key.

Some laptops put Print Screen as a secondary function of another key, so take a careful look at the key labels too. For example, on my laptop the Insert key has a tiny label "prt sc" underneath, and I have to press a certain 'fn' (function) key together with the Insert key to get Print Screen.

Post by: Hmpf on February 04, 2013, 15:56:55
I can't find any key for screenshots except the one I've been using all this time (which may be the one you're talking about anyway, I dunno). Anyway, I just tried again, for the umpteenth time, and again only got a screenshot of the desktop instead of the game. I don't really want to have to install an extra program to be able to do something that should be a normal Windows function... Does anybody have any idea what may be the problem here? I find this really strange. The only thing I can think of that I've changed about my system recently is that I deactivated Java. Is Java essential for taking screenshots in KU?

In other news: man, the underwater lab is nearly impossible. Everything there seems to be about making extremely high jumps under impossible circumstances. Wish I could post screenshots of a few of the places where I'm stuck...
Title: Re: Stuck? (Here there be SPOILERS, obviously.)
Post by: Hmpf on February 04, 2013, 16:14:16
Tried in windowed mode, got a white screen instead of the desktop, so I guess at least the screenshot function chose the right window this time, but somehow can't "see" what's in it. Help?

Anyway... I'll just have to ask my questions in a different way, then. Right:

There is an area to the right of the underwater lab where, as far as I can see, the only way to access the sought item, which is at the top of a long vertical shaft, is to do the KU equivalent of a triangle-jump-without-the-high-jump-powerup out from under a one-tile overhang (in KS parlance). Is this true, or am I overlooking some bouncy-ball option here? Is it even possible to do that triangle jump in KU?

Can you perhaps take a photo of your screen?

...

(See discussion in the last five posts. My computer has stopped cooperating with me when it comes to taking screenshots in KU. Wish I knew why, and how to fix it.)

I've found the solution to that particular puzzle, now. There was a yellow powerup a few screens below. :D

(Though the screenshot issue is still bugging me... I've googled it, to no avail.)

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, try disabling the Aero theme, I've read that it causes these sorts of problems. (right-click somewhere on the Desktop and select Personalize from the menu).

Good luck! :)
