Knytt Stories / Re: KS Level Competition
« on: September 12, 2010, 21:07:32 »
It's really a shame I couldn't finish in time, but I think it's for the best. I wasn't looking forward to packing into a few days level designing that, had I the time to work comfortably, would have taken me about a month. I feel as if my level is really, really good, though, so I will definitely finish. As for the next level, I will probably enter it, just with a much less ambitious project. I'll have to see if I get any less busy, though... College is tough.

Congrats to Sergio.

Interestingly enough, making KS levels with "deep meanings" can be both incredibly easy and frustratingly difficult. It's as easy to miss the mark by making the message too blatant as it is to make it too ambiguous to be noticed. If you do things right, you don't even need to put a message in it, and people will still think it has some deep meaning. For example, take my level Darkness. It started out as a small experiment with blacked-out tilesets, and ended up looking like it was almost a metaphor for something. Almost.

I definitely didn't get any whiffs of even a story in Darkness, much less an underlying metaphor. It seems like levels work like House of Leaves: You don't actually need to put any meaning in the text, as long as you give the reader a thousand clues as to what the meaning is. Fantastic book, by the way.

Augh... I don't know if I'll finish in time. Finding time for Knytt Stories in the first few weeks of college is hard. >_<

But I'm making okay progress, I suppose. Maybe...

Go here, press Ctrl+F, and type 'It waits'.

And after you're done, watch this LBP level by me inspired by "It Waits."

(ignore the weird border which was not added by me...)

A very great level for what it is. I like the way you hid the secret item.

A slight oversight:

I loved the music, too.

Um, so, how goes the work on this? I was really looking forward to playing the finished level and kind of expected it soon since you said "It's just about done"... Is everything allright?

Yeah, and top of that, the mods deleted the one version we COULD play, so those of us who missed it are out of luck. What a silly rule that is.

You're absolutely right. It's Evil's business. Evil has the right to use whichever browser he chooses, just like I have the right to inform him that 95% of the educated internet used FF or Chrome.

Let's not drag the thread off-topic.

As far as I know, both Firefox and Chrome (the only two browsers you have any business switching to) ask you what to import as soon as you first run them. I think there is an automatic feature to import essentially everything (cookies, bookmarks, passwords). When you first run the new browser, I think it's the first thing you see.

Haha it is surprising to see my name in a Nifflas post!

About Myst, it's a really great series. The first three are amazing, and though the series goes downhill from there, there are still some great Ages. Namely Spire is especially impressive.

As others have said, Riven is the most difficult while Exile is definitely the easiest (but my favorite).

Glorious and inspiring.

5.) There's *something* that could be done to almost every single tileset I'm using to make it fit my purposes ever so slightly better. Better not to open that can of worms.@Everyone: About fifteen more screens and I'll be hitting the 400 mark. :-)

Haha, I wish I were like you... When something's wrong with a tileset, I go out of my way getting permission to fix it... When I would like a CO and I can't find a similar one, I draw it, and since I can't draw at all, it always takes a long time... I am a perfectionist with little skill at it's a bad combination lol.
