Knytt Stories / Re: Halloween Themed Levels
« on: October 31, 2023, 21:09:00 »
Here are 9 more levels to consider playing this Halloween. :)

A Halloween Adventure (Dandelion): Save your cat!
[Normal][Small][Challenge]

Download
It's in the title, isn't it? Adorable and dripping with personality.

Gyffes (plural): It's not too late for us to be together.
[Easy][Small][Misc/Environmental]

Download
This is arguably a Father's Day level, but its exquisitely unsettling story and rich, cinematic visuals are second to none.

Harlow and the Tarandus Queen (plural)
[Easy][Small][Environmental/Misc]

Download
A beautifully penned tale of the queen of a sunken world that longs for light and the young girl enthralled by her. Incredible writing and atmosphere. My favorite level of all time.

They Cry Out (TigerNDV): Be sure your sin will find you out…
[Normal/Hard/Lunatic][Medium][Challenge/Environmental]

DownloadDownload (easy)
This visually stunning level opens up bright and airy and reveals its horror slowly over time. A tight, linear narrative similar in structure to Harlow. (Note: the "easy" version, closer to Very Hard, is highly recommended unless you're a masochist.)

Coldmist Mountain (Talps and Jetio4): Juni must climb Coldmist to save her town.
[Hard][Small][Challenge]

Download
Return the cursed artifact stolen from an ancient shrine. Understated horror and a world awash with beautiful gloom.

Gehenna (Salmoneous): Tormented, Unhallowed, Dead…
[Very Hard/Lunatic][Large][Challenge]

Download
Dark and extremely challenging.

Hinterland (pfrangip): The Unknown Regions
[Normal][Small][Challenge]

Download
A brief liminal experience with innovative visuals and great music.

Woods (Andy)
[Easy][Small][Environmental]

Download
A short walk through a wonderfully dense and twisted forest.

Woodgrove Hotel v0.1 (A): Lost in a strange land, Juni finds a hotel
[Normal][Large][Challenge]

Download
Sadly, a flawed and unfinished level with loads of potential. Great concept and atmosphere. Feels very much like an old RPG Maker horror game.

Deep Remembers was nice, even though I gently despise the silhouetted sprayers (17:1 and 17:5) for being so RNG-based. Its spirit definitely lived on in your other work, so I’m not too sad it was abandoned. The waterfall transition into the first colored area is lovely.

100 Rooms and You hooked me the least, but it was a treat to see ego’s Blueprints tileset used. I agree it may have been more fun as a puzzle level. I ended up cheating my way through the caves with the save anywhere function. The signs got a few laughs out of me. Also, surasshu is such a stellar musician—great selection!

I’d love to see Remember Me revisited, though I won’t hold my breath. Great concept and visuals. I particularly dug the mine tileset; it felt like what I might have done with mine had I possessed the artistic wherewithal back then. I do so adore the roses from Florescence Greens as well.

More than any of these, Liangzhu feels like a long lost treasure, perhaps a little like Schubert’s beautiful but unfinished 8th symphony. The track Path of Water is excellent and fit perfectly here. I actually didn’t mind the constant turquoise, nor do I balk at a depressing story, but I understand it’s one matter to be a bystander to the tale and quite another to be its author. Ah well, perhaps in another world!

Thank you for taking the time to share these little fragments of hidden Knytt history.

Knytt Stories / Knytt Reverse
« on: September 20, 2023, 23:17:52 »
Background
This exchange transpired a few days ago on Niffcord:
Quote from: Discord
Hmpf Macslow: Hey, why is the wind in Knytt world always blowing from the right? I'm making a level about a part of the (real) world where the wind is nearly always blowing from the west (left, in KS terms), and basically allll the trees in all the tilesets that are wind-bent are bent the wrong direction; the dust object blows only left to right; the leaf object likewise... 😄
Hmpf Macslow: (Are there custom objects that reverse the direction? But that still leaves all the trees.)
Pie: Mirror every tileset/screen and then add a sign that says right is west
Pie: Hmm...now I want to do that to The Machine for science
Lucinda: omg pls
As a result, I made a tool to generate a mirror image of any level.

Features
In addition to reflecting map data and graphical assets, it can
  • Adjust shifts, triggers, warps, map spoofing, and custom object offsets;
  • Adjust the default save file;
  • Replace objects with their mirrored versions if available (some are approximate, like birds and fish); and
  • Reposition wide objects (e.g. the wide spike bar, 6:1) if possible (it won't overwrite another object).
Object replacement/repositioning even works on custom objects that use vanilla object behaviors.

Some people requested silly features like reversing the music and cutscenes, so I have included those as options. Audio processing is handled by a separate command line program called sox which is bundled with this program. If you don't want to use it, just delete the sox folder.

Usage
For basic usage, drag the level's folder onto knytt_reverse.exe. It will create a new level in your worlds folder with "(reversed)" appended to the original level's name. The original level will not be changed in any way. If you want to change the options, run knytt_reverse --help on the command line or see the examples below.

Issues
I don't intend to spend any more time on this, but let me know if you run into any problems and I'll see if they can be fixed easily. Known issues are listed below.

Knytt Stories / Re: KS editing with old eyes
« on: August 04, 2023, 18:51:31 »
two? is yknytt getting an editor?

I've been tinkering on my old unreleased editor. Most of the major functionality has been finished for a very long time, so the plan is to cut the unnecessary features, add modern necessities like scaling, and sand off the rough edges.

Knytt Stories / Re: How to become your own playtester
« on: August 04, 2023, 18:45:16 »
As I said already on Discord, it's great to see you back. I held out hope for Falling Water for years, but was sure it was a lost cause by now. This is the most pleasant surprise of the decade! C)

Hi. I'm sorry I dropped out of everything for ten years, especially @person who offered to do the music for my level and whose name I currently can't remember because it's been *that* long.

That was Fubaka and I. If you still want to use the track I wrote back then, I could make a proper recording of it now. :) I can't promise much more than that at this time, though.

Fubaka is still around, so it's possible he would be interested in contributing. He's also put out a lot of music under Creative Commons licenses that's worth checking out: Fubaka on Bandcamp The Cup Bearer on Bandcamp Bonus album on Archive.org

Iasthai is an excellent level and well worth your time. It is distinctive both for its grounded setting and its treatment of heavy thematic material—pain, loss, illness, recovery.

Something Iasthai has in spades is vibes. Careful attention was paid to the packaging (icon, info screen, fonts, cutscenes), setting the stage for a diverse and venerable library of tilesets, thoughtfully curated soundtrack, and interesting screen compositions. Notably, the interiors are consistently top shelf (Lucinda's inner Sims player is on display here).

The writing is another highlight. Iasthai somehow manages to flit seamlessly between comedic exchanges with quirky characters and solemn meditations on pain. The narrative is nonlinear, even labyrinthine, and this structure lends itself well to the subject at hand: healing is rarely a lucid or linear process. I'm reminded of John Green's musing in Turtles All the Way Down that "in some ways pain is the opposite of language." Iasthai's honest prose finds a chink in that barrier of incommunicability, admitting a brief glimpse into others' inner worlds.

If I had to find something to criticize, some outdoor areas don't live up to the standard of polish I came to expect from this level. The challenges didn't add much to the experience for me; I think I would have preferred it to be easier, resting on the strength of its writing and environments, or for challenges to be employed more judiciously to advance the story.

In my book, Iasthai is an instant classic that pushes the storytelling boundaries of the Knytt canon. I look forward to your future work.

Some of the music by Snail's House gives me a Nifflas vibe. Check out [covered in white], Thinkin' of u, and It's gonna be alright for example.

NightSky - Challenges / Re: [Very Easy/Very Difficult] The Sheep
« on: April 05, 2017, 01:07:08 »
Any chance you'll tell us if it can be found in both Normal and Alternative difficulties?

Your solution is actually different from mine. One of the great things about Uurnog is the number of approaches you can take to each problem, even a really restrictive challenge like this one.

Uurnog / Challenge [Hard] (Spoilers): The Village is Lava
« on: March 26, 2017, 20:49:13 »
It might be best to make a separate thread for that to avoid making things too cluttered.
That's fair. I guess I was looking at it as a variation of this challenge, but you're probably right.

Uurnog / Challenge [Hard] (Spoilers): Vault ending using 2 doors
« on: March 25, 2017, 07:09:20 »
Can you get the Vault ending by only unlocking two doors (period) and without entering the village? Obviously no cheat code or developer mode allowed. Every locked door you open counts, including the O door.

Uurnog / Re: For those who played it, what did you think?
« on: March 10, 2017, 04:44:23 »
I love the visual aesthetic (especially the trees) and the procedural music, as well as the sheer number of approaches possible for each puzzle. Managing the items in the save room was an entertaining sub-game as well.

The penalties for dying felt pretty steep at first, but once you memorize how to obtain certain valuable items it's not too painful. I was kicking myself more than once for pulling something out in a cursed zone without thinking about it though. :P

I'm in agreement with several of you about the NPCs. Although it was frequently humorous to see them pop out of doors with active bombs, their random behavior (more so than their muteness) made them seem less alive than the humanoids found in Nifflas' other games, which often had distinct personalities.

Overall, a very fun and pretty game. I was personally a fan of FiNCK so not disappointed at all to see a return to that style.

Knytt Stories Level Previews / Re: [Environmental] Falling Water
« on: February 05, 2016, 20:40:41 »
For those still wondering, I contacted Hmpf a few months ago by email. She said she's been very busy with work, and while she's made a small amount of progress on Falling Water, she's having trouble with writer's block and finding time for it among other projects. She gave no indication of when the project might be completed or even return to a state of steady development, but she hasn't given up on it as of October.

Nifflas' Sources / Re: egomassive's Knytt Stories Plus mod
« on: October 20, 2015, 03:43:01 »
Never had a problem with levels disappearing, but I've noticed that sometimes uninstalling a level deletes all of the data but leaves behind the empty folder. The level will show up in the list with no title and no author, just empty parentheses. I've seen it in the original KS as well as KS+. Always assumed it was related to a file handle not being closed somewhere, but I don't know how to reproduce it reliably.
