Knytt Stories Level Editing Support / Copying levels together?
« on: February 11, 2017, 13:56:09 »
So I've been seriously considering starting up a large-ish Knytt world which would mainly be me combining several of my old started projects into one large one, revamping the story line so they all fit, and working from there.  Question is, has anyone developed a tool for copying all the screens from one level and dumping them into another?  It would not need to be fancy, just effective.  Thanks.

Knytt Stories / Lost levels recovered!!!!
« on: October 07, 2013, 13:04:58 »
So I am super excited and just have to share this real quick, and this seems the best place.  I grabbed an old usb drive I haven't used in a long time to take some documents to be printed, and what did I find on the drive???  The KS levels I thought I lost a few years ago!!!!  I must have put them on there to transfer them between computers, because I'm sure not clever enough to back up all my stuff.  Wow, it's crazy having these back!  One of the tilesets is the first version of the one I've used in... someone's 100th star celebration.  I'll post some pics when I get a chance, but I gotta run to work right now.

Yeah for accidental backups!

Creativity Support / opengameart.org and similar sites.

So, while trying to get some add ons for gimp, I found opengameart.org and wanted to know what you guys thought of it, though of course, I don't mean to take attention from this site.  It seems like there is a lot we could potentially take advantage of there and perhaps share with there.

Yeah, ok, so it's not much of a party, just sounded good at the moment.

I'm making everything I've made that has been in a released level open to the public and free to edit, so long as you mention I made it or the original in your credits.

Notes:
  • The "#t" in the titles of many of these refer to the level of transparency in the tileset.
  • The three green tilesets called "template" are for making new versions of the smoothstones tileset with different patterns.  Just fill a blank tileset with the pattern you want, copy the template over it, then make all the green transparent and put whatever you want in the empty spaces.
  • The series of games that used Stained Glass kinda got discontinued because it is a bit of a bear to use after a while.  But I did love the effect.  So, some of those tilesets might not have ever gotten used.
  • There are a few more of the stained glass tiles, but they are just variations on color, so unless someone asks for them ALL, I'm not going to worry about it.  Pretty easy to change the colors of those anyway.

Knytt Stories - Custom Content / Foggy village
« on: August 08, 2013, 03:20:04 »
So, as I mentioned in the Knytt Stories Forum, I'm looking for home or town tilesets.  I haven't really found what I want, so I'm experimenting.  The first pic is a tileset that is suppose to be a kind of still, foggy town at night, something of the psychology of a silent hill 2 but without all the blood and death.  The second pic is a sketch I did to get ideas for the tileset.

How does this look to you guys?

Knytt Stories / best city and house tilesets
« on: August 04, 2013, 03:24:14 »
So I'm kinda wanting to try my hand at a level with a story similar to Silent Hill 2 but without the gore and gratuitous killing... just the psychodyamics of several character's pasts and complexes becoming physical in a seemingly abandoned town.  It's a series who's story telling I've admired in spite of a slight distaste for horror.  Haunting psychological manifestations are always fantastic though.

But I've been spending 98% of my recent creative time making tilesets for another level and I'm burned out on it for now.  Could I get some suggestions on tilesets for towns and houses that are atmospheric, abandoned, and perhaps aged and or in ruins?  Or some tilesets I could adapt a bit, though again I'm pretty tired of tileset making right now.  The abandoned lab (name?) tileset from the default sets actually has some promise though I don't like the large scale, and I was looking at Quincent Cartographers city tileset for A Walk At Night too.  Maybe Marine by Jerom or a mod of it too (which I've already made actually).

Or anyone feel up to the challenge of making such a tileset???

Thanks guys!

About Nifflas' Website and Forum / Knyttlevels archive update?
« on: May 19, 2013, 15:50:50 »
I've looked around for any kind of update to the new knyttlevels archive project, with not much luck.  Is it completely abandoned or is there still a chance it will be finished?

Hey, I've been trying to get many of my friends interested in Knytt Stories for a long time, and the main barrier seems to be in downloading not just the game, but all the levels I want them to play.  Would it be ok with Nifflas if I prepackaged a zip file with Knytt Stories (probably + as that is what I'm now making my levels with) and my levels plus my favorite levels or ones my friends might be interested in?  I would prefer to put this on something accessible like a blog, but if that seems problematic, it seems to me there would be no problem e-mailing such a zip or putting it on a private file sharing site.  Any thoughts, concerns or denials?

So I gave up on this level.  This was to be a short lead in to a whole series, but the tileset is just too unwieldy and time consuming, and I'm also just loosing interest.  So here is what was done.  There would have been dialogue on almost every screen until contact was broken once the "dark region" was reached.  I was going to try to build up the suspense and atmosphere so that the black structures were actually kinda freaky... hopefully.  Anyhow, here it is in all its unfinished glory:

Knytt Stories - Custom Content / Tilesets in need of input
« on: April 18, 2013, 04:04:53 »
So, I had decided to try to make a knytt level using preexisting tilesets, but just as soon as I developed a plot and started trying to use them, I got unhappy and started making my own.  *shrug*

Green hills - This first tileset is pretty much done, I just want some feedback.  I used a curve to solve the problem of angles going from screen to screen, and it works quite well.  And I used Sergio's Vestiges to test how it would work with other tilesets to create cave like situations.  Likes and dislikes?

The second one I'm a bit lost on.  It's based on a dream I had which I'll include a sketch of to show what I'm aiming at.  The place is based on one part of the dream which was a kind of sacred garden with low walls and many terraces and stairs, all the plants in pots with a small section around the edge.  There was absolutely no indication that anything even existed beyond the edge of the garden, so I've placed it in a barren rocky mountain.  I'm having trouble getting the amount of detail right and the feel of the place: open and very uneven.  Those attributes aren't translating well to KS.  The light is suppose to be a kind of barrier.  There was a kind of whitish gold light to the place too that I'm having trouble figuring out.

Knytt Stories / Unlabled tileset conventions
« on: March 08, 2013, 11:59:11 »
I'm gathering tilesets for a new level, and keep encountering tilesets with no specification over whether they can be used or not.  What is the convention here for such tilesets?  Some have no owner, others have an owner and name, but don't specify anything as to whether they can be used or not.  Thanks.

End attempt at cleaver introduction.  XD

Since the release of KU without an editor, and egomassive's KS+, I've started playing around with my old knytt projects which somehow survived my last laptop crashing.  I mentioned this level 6 months ago in the thread The Probability Network
(http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5256.msg57616#msg57616) which I actually forgot all about until I tried to find where I had previewed THIS level, which I hadn't.     You can look there for a bit more info on the story.

This will be short, only around 10-20 screens I should think.  So, here is the obligatory screen shot:

Subject says it.  I'm working with gimp on tilesets for my next ks level, which uses further modifications of those I used in White City and Vague Feeling.  I've got a finished tileset that I don't want to modify, but I can't seem to match the transparency level on it with a second and third tileset I'm making to compliment it.  I always seem a few shades off.

We call it the Probability Network, PN for short.  It is a controlled reality simulation used for the precise experimental rendering of Conscious Human Observer Attributes (CHOA).  Understand, this is not a mere VR.  It is a reality, but one which works under different rules than “natural” space, rules which we control.  A Subject is chosen to investigate the PN to confirm data and to cross pollinate the various simulations in order to create the ideal balance of CHOAs.  This will result in an ideal landscape for human habitation, a heaven if you will.

The Subject’s personal and interpersonal memories must be blocked in order to avoid undue bios resulting in a tainting of the PN.

This is why you do not remember who you are.

You are the Subject.

Please proceed to the Network Switchboard for further instructions.

And that is the tentative beginning lines of my next project for Knytt Stories.  This is meant to be something like a sequel to Vague Feeling and a prequel to White City.

I’m super hung up on my Stained Glass tileset used in White City and Vague Feeling, so I’m using various modifications of that and some extras.  I’m also very likely to be using EgoMassives Knytt Mod.  I'm not completely happy with the tilesets I have yet, and will probably add some more curves.  Part of the idea will be that the player changes the game as she plays, changing not just colors but slightly changing the map with each change.  I may eventually add some semi-realistic side areas akin perhaps to parts of Strange Darkness's 'An Empty Corridor,' which I beta tested for him  and admire for some of its qualities of reality breaking down.  (SD, ya gotta finish that thing.)

As with all my projects of late, this will probably not be ready for a year, but I figured I'd put this up to get some input.

On my last release post, White City, I alluded to a level I was working on that was something like 30% done.  Well... it and all my other unreleased work appears to be fubared.  It was really dumb how it happened: I use to have a second knytt directory for some reason that I never used.  A few weeks ago I was clearing up space and I saw what I thought was that extra knytt directory.  I looked in it quickly, it seemed unused, so I deleted it.  Recently I went looking for my knytt directory, and gasp of gasps, I couldn't find it.  I had deleted my actual knytt directory, not the extra.

There is a slight chance some of my old work is on an older computer, but I doubt it.  This in some ways is a relief because most of my work was for big epic levels that I really don't think I'll ever get done at this point in my life.  That means I'm free to make small and simple levels which I am more likely to make.

So, that is the state of knytting affairs for headgrinder.
