Knytt Stories / Re: PFrangip's Lunatic Level Reviews

Pfrangip,
I can't tell you how gratified I am that you considered my recommendations and then played and thoroughly analyzed them. Not to mention astounded by your skill and creativity in completing them.

I think we're both largely on the same page with how difficult classifying level difficulties can be. It's easy to see how designers can get it "wrong" since they are immersed in a level's creation. But often players disagree due to having different skillsets or predilections or even due to variable luck during gameplay.

I have some notes regarding your reviews. Please understand that they aren't meant to dismiss or overly criticize your intelligent and careful appraisals. Only to offer a different perspective and additional information. If I didn't mention a level, assume I agree or understand your critique for as far as I was able to progress in the level.

Who Kidnaps The Knytts?
I disagree with your evaluation of it's fairness and/or difficulty level. I had to quit part way through (I'm guessing a bit more than halfway?) due to a precise platforming area, but even before that, locations of some keys and code pieces didn't seem reasonably possible without consulting the editor. And in addition, those same challenges involved extremely precise platforming if you could even conceive of their locations on your own.

When you say: (Reading my old review, I seemed to have found it much more difficult. I guess I've improved with age.) I would hope you evaluate difficulty in the place of an average or the majority of KS players as much as possible as opposed to your personal experience as an adept. Though, to be honest, I haven't had many opportunities to exercise such Platonic contemplation and restraint myself, so I'm not sure how difficult it actually is.

Juni's Nightmare
Just wanted to mention I ascribe to a 'one drop' definition of difficulty. If in a giant easy level, there is one lunatic challenge that cannot be bypassed in order to achieve a normal ending, it's a lunatic level in my eyes.

Silver Lining
I knew this might make me appear foolish when I recommended it. I know I just need to be more creative or more patient, but I've spent hours trying to figure out the correct sequence of shift progression and exploration required to get a good ending to no avail. I think difficulty encompasses more than just platforming and enemy dodging precision. I wish someone would stream this so I can figure it out.

The Tower
You might know this, but although there is no ending scene, there is a reachable win tile with a default "You Win" screen.

It's possible that this level was released unfinished. I believe it's also possible that every aspect of its design, or lack of design, is intentional.

This level has haunted me. It's satisfaction can be most understood not through it's gameplay nor by the supporting narrative or lived-in world, but by the experience you go through ascending into increasing bewilderment and ultimately madness. The experience feels similar to that elicited by internet golden-age horror copypastas or ARGs. As the creator of The Five Minute Hallway (neat level), I'm surprised you may not have noticed a similar possible inspiration.

It remains, in my mind, one of the hidden, unsung important levels of KS. I think everyone should play this once they know they enjoy the game, have developed decent skill at it and have a good knowledge of how to view the editor. I have no shame in using the editor or otherwise cheating past some parts. I don't think it diminished the experience for me.

It's possible that few or even no others will have a similar experience with The Tower. Especially now that I've spoiled the level's intentions and you won't go in without knowing anything.

Anyway, cheers and thanks again. I look forward to seeing your future reviews and other contributions to KS.

I think this is a valuable undertaking, Pfrangip.

During DonDoli's blind playthrough of Ultigonio's Deep Freeze, Don and we viewers were very impressed by the sights and sounds of the design aesthetics and amazed by the complexity, uniqueness and endless variety of puzzles that fit together seamlessly. Some of us theorized that Deep Freeze might have done poorly in the most recent Epic Level Competition because the voters couldn't crack the tough challenges and get far enough to understand how impressive it is. It's also possible that challenge didn't play a very large role. I don't know.

I love giving level recommendations. However, I'm not very good at determining what constitutes lunatic. Especially since I tap out on most very hard levels.
Here's what I can think of:
  • Tower of Babylon - Mateus Dalmedico Gessoni
  • Regina's Adventure - Purple Pineapple
  • The Healer - Pale Imitation
  • Who Kidnaps The Knytts? - Dr. Korbin
  • Deep Freeze - Ultigonio
  • Gehenna - Salmoneous
  • As I Closed My Eyes - Linus
  • The Tower - Zetim
  • Juni's Nightmare - Sergio Cornaga & David C.
  • Silver Lining - Yohji
Not all of those levels are enjoyable and aspects of many are certainly unfair, but they all had something that fascinated me.
I'd also like to hear your appraisals of other levels by Secret Glitch, KG, Purple Pineapple and James Vaughan

Cheers and thanks from a proud member of the LOCP!

Thanks.

hello. which level is best level please. thank you.

Okay, it's up. Thanks, Talps. I still have hope for that Eurydice remake someday. C)

I was making a very short list of essential levels for a newcomer to KS. I included this level, obviously. Then, I noticed it wasn't on the knyttlevels archive. Sometimes, when a level I really enjoy isn't there, I upload the best version of it I can find. But since Talps is still somewhat active in the community, I thought I should request its upload with a post here. Just in case he felt any small changes were needed before posterity.

I feel blessed by another well crafted VG level. I could feel Nifflas' influence in the fable-like quality of the story enhanced by the innocent humor of VG's characters. A few OCOs were neat to see. Especially a certain vain, insecure, lovestruck knytt, as well as a useful cracked open door I hadn't seen before. I especially enjoyed the purple key challenge and some of the air pocket challenges toward the end of the third ending. Something about how you changed the bird's sprite on the cutscene to the 'romantic' ending had me laughing out loud.
Not really a criticism of this level, but I feel the urge to ask for a future level to include a bit more difficult precision challenges. I know it can be difficult to find a good balance and not frustrate players too much. But sometimes I find it satisfying to sweat a bit more.

Snooping for sneaky secrets was a good excuse for lingering in such a gorgeous and serene place. Quality as always. Thank you for making this.

I'm happy that seeing my comment reminded you to take a look at that wonderful game again.
It's funny that you were surprised at the difficulty of Define and even worked to make a version that's easier to deal with. Meanwhile, you have other levels with insanely hard screens and boss battles. I assume that those speed and precision challenges are more aligned with the purpose of those levels and can be really satisfying for players that are able to beat them.
Judging by your description, the changes you made will make it more enjoyable for many players. Especially those new to KS or puzzle platformers in general.
I did finally play though Define completely. I got one excellent ending.  It was so satisfying all the way through. I would play in chunks of time and take breaks. It was exhausting to play. Partly because it is so long. Partly because the mental challenge of remembering block definitions and visualizing the progression of different permutations of Juni's chain of actions taxes my little brain in ways it's not generally accustomed to. That's also why I loved it, of course. And I always looked forward to getting back into it after my gray matter had cooled down somewhat. I appreciated that the difficulty of the vast majority of the challenges in Define had very little to do with lightning quick reflexes or super-precise movements.

Recently, KS streamers DonDoli and UnPigeonVoyageur have done playthroughs of Define. Here are the first parts of each:

I'm sorry to dredge this topic up after so long, and I have nothing significant to add.  I'm trying to play this again after some years and I'm predictably in awe of the programming effort and complexity, puzzle designs and sheer length of this level. I also just enjoy playing it (for stretches of time).
Perhaps there's people in the current community who haven't played this level yet...

I'm not sure if you are referring to the upload of Endless Winter or the gigantic batch of levels a few months ago, but neither are me.
I assumed Endless Winter and the other egomassive levels were from egomassive himself since they appear to be updated versions; which might answer @scratskinner 's question.
The huge level dump is a mystery, but a welcome gift.  I played some neat levels by Yohji and KG from there.

I found a video (not by Bass) that serves as a nice introduction to the Level Editor.

Does anybody know where I can find this level?

There's no mention of a level called "Crazy Town" anywhere on the archive or the forums.  Maybe it's under another name?  The uploader's name doesn't ring any bells either.
It looks pretty fun to me.

Knytt Stories / Pigeon Voyageur - Prolific KS Streamer

I just wanted to give a shout out to the most prolific Knytt Stories let'splayer on YouTube: Pigeon Voyageur

https://www.youtube.com/user/PigeonxHunter/playlists?shelf_id=11&sort=dd&view=50

He appears to have close to 400 KS playthrough videos, many with multiple levels per video.  So if you've ever wanted to dive into the massive, terrifying, dangerous, dark, drippy, foggy, echoey, swampy, arcane, unintelligible, confusing, grizzly bear-infested ecosystem that is knyttlevels.com in the hopes of finding that one hidden gem that no one here has ever heard of or talked about, you should check out his channel.  He's the only streamer (that I could find) currently posting new KS level playthroughs featuring different levels each time (apart from longer levels which require series).  And he's making new ones just about every day!  This means, of course, that along with the excellent levels, he plays the broken, the unfinished, the unfair, and the pointless.  He also plays the goofy, the cute, the bizarre, the silly and the outrageous.  He occasionally quits when something is too tedious or difficult or when he can't figure something out (sadly, this happened at the end of Talps' brilliant Coming of the Dark).  He's a pretty good player, too.  The other day he posted an Industrial Trap (SecretGlitch) playthrough that I had to turn off midway through because he got so much farther than me.  And dedicated as well, he has a 100% playthrough of the infamous Azure Serenity by Shreeps that totals around 9 hours!  Unfortunately for me and other fellow non-French speakers, his commentary is entirely in French so I can't completely share in his joys, frustrations and puzzlements.  His videos often have less than a handful of views, so hopefully the word can be spread so this knytt warrior can get a little more deserved attention.  :)
