It's here folks! The totally unofficial sequel crossover holiday extravaganza thingy nobody was expecting!

[ Save the High Jump Again ] (file size: ~2.6MB)

This short level contains references to both Save the High Jump by CWolvie and also to my own The Bluebird of Happiness (including spoilers for one of the latter's endings, so you might want to play it beforehand!). It's a challenge level with some light story, featuring remixed versions of some of my previous tilesets and my own spin on a couple traditional Spanish Christmas songs 8) A bit of a warning though: although I originally aimed for a "Normal" difficulty level, the end result is a bit on the hard side in some screens. Hopefully it's not a dealbreaker, but if you think otherwise please let me know so I may either reclassify the level or fix the difficulty spikes.

KS+ is NOT required, although using it enables a few extra animations and adds 7 collectible stars (which are just for added challenge and don't unlock anything).

Hope you have fun! Don't expect much though, as this is just something I cooked up mostly in the past two days since my Christmas vacation started :P2  As always, please feel free to leave your feedback and/or bug reports here. Happy holidays everyone!

The Ruins of EGA-Lana is a small KS+ challenge level heavily inspired by the famous freeware game La-Mulana (except this one is made with an old-school DOS PC game look, very much like my previous level The Dithered Temple, rather than mimicking the aesthetics of a MSX game). It features bonus collectible artifacts, hidden secrets, challenges involving several KS+'s exclusive mechanics and a total of three (?) difficulty modes: Easy, Hard and Lunatic.

Despite being a very short adventure, this level was designed to have a rather high replay value by means of providing players with a different experience in each of the mentioned modes beyond the expected differences in the overall difficulty. For example, Easy mode is more of a mix of platforming and simple puzzles, whereas Lunatic mode is almost exclusively focused on the challenge aspect even with regards to the collectibles. Be sure to give each mode a try! (well, at least a couple of them... I understand Lunatic is not exactly everyone's cup of tea :P2 )

And, for those of you who are always looking for a bigger challenge... you're in luck! This level is also the setting for the first ever Play Knytt Stories contest, which is being graciously hosted by pfrangip and officially starts today! :D  There are 3 different categories (plus a bonus challenge) in which you can participate and have a chance to win various prizes! Be sure to have a look at the contest's thread here to learn the details and/or ask any questions you may have about it.

Hope you have fun with this level, and please feel free to post your comments/feedback/screams of frustration (depending on which version you play) here. And, if you're taking part in the contest... good luck!

Development Showcase / [Music] OST for a fake game and other stuff
« on: October 11, 2021, 13:18:40 »
So... I've been dabbling in OpenMPT a bit during the past few months, since I'm still pretty much a novice at making music and I wanted to get some practice. As usual, and just as I tend to do when making tilesets, I ended up creating a bunch of mostly random stuff just for the hell of it :P

Here's a soundtrack I made for a non-existent retro space shooter game (SoundCloud playlist with 5 tracks):
Star Carvo 2 OST

Some other songs, in no particular order and each one made in a completely different style:

An Underwater Melody
Not Really a NES Chiptune
Hidden Complex

This is a very small environmental/playground KS level I made for the Knytt of the Month Klub #13 event at Glorious Trainwrecks. It's a very short one, although if you're one of those players who enjoys checking every nook and cranny for secrets, it'll probably last you for at least 30 minutes or so, as there is quite a lot of hidden content here to be found.

It's a vanilla KS level, but you can also play it in Knytt Stories Plus to enable bonus collectibles. These don't unlock any extra content, but they are shiny and therefore you totally need to gather all 100 of them :hiddenstar:

The White Spire is a short adventure in which you must find your way up to the top of a sorcerer's tower in order to dispel a very nasty (and visually lacking) eternal night curse that was unleashed upon Juni's world.

It's basically your standard retro-themed challenge level. Two difficulty modes (Hard and Lunatic) are supported, and there are two? different endings you can get.

This level was made for the 2020 Un-epic Level Contest hosted by Purple Ink. It's also the first level where I tried to compose my own soundtrack from scratch (just the main theme though). Hopefully the end result won't make anyone's ears bleed... too much

Forgotten Realms is a sort-of-open-world playground level with a big focus on exploration. This project was mostly an attempt to string together many of my discarded/abandoned KS levels as I could, although it also features a pretty big number of brand new tilesets and assets.

It is a rather big world composed of several areas, each of them with its own distinct theme and gameplay mechanics. Some of them are merely for you to roam while you enjoy the scenery and music, whereas others will present you with classic KS challenges (traps and enemies), light mazes and even puzzles involving hidden passages and collectibles. There's a little bit of everything here!

  • A total of 25 distinct areas to explore! 10 of them can be accessed simply by collecting powers. You can unlock another 7 areas by collecting keys and finding hidden passages, and 8 more by finding special collectibles and codes (see below)
  • Tons of custom graphics by yours truly and many other authors (Fubaka, Purple Ink, Brian Lehmann and all the cool people who contributed to the Community Tileset Project).
  • 20 tracks of ambient music by Fubaka (mostly from his albums Deparct, Proturian EP and Nihilurian EP), as well as many custom ambiance tracks.
  • 9 hidden energy crystals (custom collectible). Find all of them and use them at a certain place to get access to a set of bonus areas!
  • A secret glyph code divided into 5 pieces scattered through the entire world. This can be entered at a special room to unlock yet another set of bonus areas.
  • Four easter egg mini-areas referencing some of my other works.

Knytt Stories + is supported but not required. This level runs in vanilla KS without any mods. However, playing it in KS+ will enable the following extra features:

  • Bonus collectibles: 100 coins and 50 golden creatures. NOTE: golden creatures are generally much harder to find and/or collect than the coins and crystals. They don't unlock any new areas/features and are simply intended for players than want an added challenge.
  • Extra graphical effects (custom character sprites, fog...) in some areas.
  • Limited support for KS+'s map function (you need to enable the "Force Map" menu option manually, though)
  • Single pass rendering enabled by default (minimizes flickering during animations and transitions)

As usual, feel free to post here asking for hints or just sharing your thoughts on the level. Hope you enjoy this adventure through these once forgotten lands! Also... happy new year!

PLEASE NOTE: This will be the final version of the level and it contains all the stuff I originally planned to make for it. Unfortunately, due to circumstances that forced my hand, I wasn't able to spend as much time as I'd have wanted on testing and polishing this final release. Hopefully this only means you might spot very minor graphical issues here and there, but if you run into any serious game-breaking problems, please let me know and I'll try to address them and release a fixed version when I can.

Just a very short Halloween-themed adventure. Juni's taking a bit too long trying out her Halloween costume and she's late to the big party in town. Will she be able to find her way back before she misses the event...?

Features a bunch of custom content (including a remixed version of the tileset I made for The Bluebird of Happiness) and a secret bonus ending. KS+ is not required, but there are a couple graphical effects that will only be visible if you use it. Alternatively, you can play the level in vanilla KS if you prefer a cleaner, unfiltered look. Your choice.

Had to rush this one quite a bit because it was something I suddenly decided to make just a few days ago. Hopefully it works as intended :P2 Happy Halloween!

"The Bluebird of Happiness" is a knytt story inspired in one of Maeterlinck's works which you may be already familiar with. It's your classic "collect all powers/keys and find your way to the exit" KS adventure, spiced up with some light challenges and puzzles along the way. This level started as an attempt to make a more "Nifflas-style" classic KS level, both visually and gameplay-wise. There aren't any special themes nor distinct game mechanics / gimmicks at work here, but the story is a tad more elaborate compared to my other levels. It's also a bit longer than my usual stuff (if you aim for 100% completion).

There are a total of three endings here. The first two you can get by exploring the main area and overcoming medium/normal challenges, and the third one requires you to unlock a separate area (via a hidden code) and beat a much more challenging section (hard difficulty).

Spoiler: A couple screenshots (click to show/hide)

This level should run in vanilla KS without any mods. It doesn't use any of KS+'s exclusive features, although I've included map spoofs that will make it easier to use KS+'s map function if you choose to enable the "Force Map" menu option.

Hope you enjoy this adventure! Feel free to post here to share your opinion and/or report any problems you might run into.

This level has a deeper and more complex story behind it than you can possibly imagine... and by that I mean I went to the park to take a walk, took a bunch of mostly random photos and then thought: "Hey, I bet I could build a KS level with these!"... and lo and behold, a level was indeed built! It was going to be just a quick experiment on photorealistic tilesets that I intended to release in my Short/Experimental levels thread. However, since there aren't many KS level releases nowadays, I changed my mind and decided to expand it into something a bit more substantial.

Alcázar is just a pretty short environmental level with a focus on ambiance, exploration and secrets. There's no story whatsoever, but you'll get a nice photo slideshow if you manage to unlock the exit by finding and collecting all the necessary items. If you fancy hunting for cunningly (i.e. annoyingly) hidden secrets, there's also a bonus area which contains an alternate "ending". Oh and... be prepared to be confused about what's solid and what's not for a while :P

Hell freezes over! Flying pigs spotted! Bat child found in cave! I'm finally making a large KS level :O

This is a project that was almost entirely born from the plethora of unfinished levels and abandoned tilesets/ideas that have been gathering digital dust in my hard drive for 2-3 years. Instead of finally discarding them for good, I decided to rescue them from oblivion and combine them all into a single large level! (probably not epic-sized, though... but I'm aiming for about 200-250 distinct screens or so).

The level will feature the classic KS progression system, although it will not be completely linear in nature. In order to reach and unlock all areas, you will have to find all power-ups and keys by thoroughly searching the lands and overcoming the occasional challenge. However, you will sometimes unlock multiple new areas at once, enabling you to explore them in any order you like.

Since this is mostly an amalgamation of many different ideas and assets (incomplete/unused tilesets and COs, abandoned levels, drafts, etcetera) and I'm focusing more on quantity over quality here, the overall level of detail and polish may not be on par with some of my other smaller releases. Still, effort is being put into making all areas look interesting and work together in a single (hopefully) cohesive experience.

And now, for the obligatory bullet list of planned features:

  • Many different areas (both brand new and imported from abandoned projects) to unlock and explore!
  • Lots of custom assets! (tilesets, gradients, ambiance, music and COs)
  • Hidden areas and bonus collectibles to be found by those with a keen eye.
  • Support for KS+'s map feature and other minor enhancements (KS+ is not required, though).

UPDATE: "VGA version" now available! If you want to play the level with improved graphics and sound, use the link below:

[ The CGA Temple - VGA Edition ] (file size: ~1.7MB)

This KS+ level was created using some leftover graphics from The Dithered Temple, as a spin-off of sorts. It's a different kind of level from TDT, though. This one is much easier and mainly exploration-based, with some platforming challenges/puzzles here and there. It doesn't have an ending (hence the Playground tag), but there are a few secrets and bonuses to be found.

The level was made to resemble a very old PC CGA game, complete with 4-color graphics and (fake) beeper SFX and music, so the aesthetics may or may not be your cup of tea :P2  If you want to play the level with more up-to-date graphics and sound, feel free to give the VGA edition a try instead!

Features:

  • Many custom sprites, sound effects and music, including a brand new track by LPChip.
  • KS+ collectibles (artifacts and coins).
  • Support for KS+'s map function.
  • A bonus area you can unlock by collecting all 5 cyan artifacts.
  • A .knytt.bin file that fits into a single 3.5" HD floppy disk!

Hope you guys enjoy it! Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Juni is sometimes a bit too curious for her own good. She has just become trapped in what seems to be the ruins of an old underground sanctuary. Help her find the way back to the surface and maybe find whatever it's hidden there!

"Emerald Sanctuary" is just a short and very simple adventure I decided to make on a whim before resuming work in my larger projects. It's basically a classic straightforward KS challenge level with no gimmicks (only 3 COs this time :P2 ). It features ambient music by Fubaka and custom graphics by the Nifflas community (with a few contributions from me).

Playing in KS+ enables a tint filter that makes the graphics a bit shinier, whereas playing in normal KS (or other mods) results in somewhat darker but more saturated colors, so feel free to choose whichever KS version depending on your preferences!

"The Dithered Temple" is a rather short, retro-styled (complete with fake 16-color EGA graphics and AdLib-like music, emulating old-school DOS games) and quite hard challenge level that will put your KS (and KS+) skills to the test. It's tough, but mostly fair... or at least that was my intention :P

Two versions of the game, "Original" and "Light" (Very Hard and Hard modes, respectively) are available right at the start. A word of warning, though! The "Very Hard" difficulty tag on the Original version is there for a reason, so if you prefer a less stressful (but still reasonably challenging) experience, playing the Light version is recommended.

Main features:

  • Retro-style visuals and music, complete with 16 color fake EGA graphics (for the most part) and fake FM synth AdLib/SoundBlaster music.
  • A lot of traps and tricky jumps, combined with some KS+ exclusive obstacles that will offer experienced KS players a good challenge.
  • Two difficulty modes: Very Hard (original version) and Hard (light version).
  • Hidden treasure vaults and collectible artifacts that unlock additional content. They're all well hidden, but marked with subtle hints.
  • Lots of bonus content and hints available after beating the main quest. This includes an unlockable Environmental area and also a (completely optional) Lunatic mini-area that contains extremely hard versions of some of the challenges that will EVISCERATE you really test your reflexes (and your patience!).
  • A couple of animated cutscenes (including a full-screen one).

Spoiler: Screenshot Gallery (click to show/hide)

Any feedback and suggestions on how to improve the level will be appreciated! It's been ages since I last designed a pure "Challenge" level, so I'm not very confident I did a good job here

NOTE: This level requires egomassive's KS+ mod to play. Using version 1.3.2 or greater is recommended.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / Short/Experimental levels by VG
« on: September 05, 2017, 14:42:22 »
Following on Sergio's steps, I decided to create a new thread where I'll be posting levels I made that I personally deemed too short/strange for a normal release. Be aware that most of these will be basically weird experiments, abandoned ideas, pointless timewasters or all of the mentioned. If you're okay with that (i.e. you're REALLY bored), then by all means, give them a go :P2

[ You Have to Put the Level into the Juni ] (~720KB -- requires KS+)

A really short joke level demonstrating the possibilities of KS+ for implementing bizarre gameplay mechanics that temporarily confuse the player. Has references to other levels and two different endings.

[ Strolling Simulator Pro ] (~5MB -- playable in vanilla KS)

Yet another photo-realistic level. Not exactly a new idea, but it features custom ambience sounds and a few graphical effects that you might enjoy. Also, it looks a bit nicer and has a small secret if you play it on KS+.

[ Maze of Despair ] (~6MB -- playable in vanilla KS)

An experimental maze level. Navigate your way out of this small but disorienting labyrinth. Play it on KS+ for a slightly better experience. Note: A) Controls are quite finicky. Releasing the arrow keys too fast will result in ignored commands, and holding the keys for too long will probably cause you to spin way too fast. Also, B) despite the title, Monokuma is not involved in any way.

[ Super Juni Breakout ] (~1.5MB -- KS mods NOT recommended)

A pretty buggy and dumb Knytt Stories / Breakout crossover. Help Juni escape by bouncing around a lot and collecting the keys inside the colored blocks! Also, keep an eye open for the awesome (not!) secret ending. Note: usage of KS mods (KS+, KS Ex...) is NOT recommended, as this often results in very slow performance with this level.

[ Bad Apple ] (~6.2MB -- works in vanilla KS)

A non-interactive experiment on (almost) full-screen video playback and CO optimization in vanilla KS. Best played/watched in full-screen or KS+'s "Hide desktop" modes.

[ Compact ] (~4KB -- works in vanilla KS)

An attempt to make a tricky challenge/puzzle level with only one screen, using all powers/keys in vanilla KS and with a total file size of less than 4KB. It's doable, but quite hard. Try to finish it without collecting all powers/keys for added challenge (the detector doesn't count :P )

[ Rhombodesia ] (~1.8MB -- requires KS+)

This is a simple playground level that started as an experiment on building a level (almost) entirely out of slopes. I ended up turning it into a KS+ collect-a-thon with platforming challenges and some custom graphics. Find and grab all 100 diamonds to unlock access to a bonus area and two secret challenges (Normal and Very Hard).

More to come! (probably)

Current progress: 100% completed (releasing soon!)

It's been ages since I last designed a pure "Challenge" level, so I decided to take one of my recently released tilesets and start yet another project (instead of finishing any of the other 3 I started, like a smart individual would :P ).

"The Dithered Temple" (tentative title) will be a short, retro-styled (complete with fake 16-color EGA graphics and AdLib-like music) and rather hard challenge level with lots of traps and tricky jumps. It will also feature a secret, completely optional area with harder versions of the regular challenges and possibly a few new ones that will make the player experience a whole new level of hate towards the level designer (hence the Hard/Lunatic tag).
