In a certain place in time and space I recently revealed plans I've been procrastinating over since ages ago to release a bunch of unfinished, probably-abandoned projects.

All of these levels are unfinished and none are very long. I've added some in-game notes to the end of each level explaining what my plans were and why the level was never completed.

2012 - Deep Remembers [Small, Hard]
This level would have told the story of a Knytt waking up deep underground and trying to find her way to the surface. If that sounds familiar, it probably won't be a surprise to learn I made this not long after I finished 'Petals of a Dying Flower' and while I was getting close to finishing 'I Dreamed of the Sky'. I had a plan for the whole level with lots of weirdness and mystery - all the good stuff.

What's there is, well, the graphics are not amazing. Which is pretty much why this died; I didn't have the skill to make things look how I wanted. I also had plans for cutscenes that were way beyond my ability to make. Ambition overstretched reach and while this floated in the back of my mind for a good few years (as late as 2018 I was considering asking Vegetal Gibber if he wanted to make it as a collaboration), I never did more than tweak the script from time to time.

2013 - 100 Rooms and You [Medium, Very Hard, KS+]
I wanted to make a level with 100 small puzzles, ten sets of ten puzzles with a different theme for each set. The first were a kind of tutorial, the next were set underground, the next were to be made using Nifflas' tilesets...

I am not amazing at making puzzles. So in the end I found myself making a succession of increasingly nasty challenges.

The level went through two or three iterations where I made a small amount, deleted it and started again, before I realised this just wasn't working for me. I couldn't make the level I wanted to make, so... I put it to bed.

2013 - Remember Me [Small, Normal, KS+]

In 2013 I posted a few screenshots here and there for what ought to have been 'Remember Me'. It was gonna be an introspective, scenic level playing with revisiting areas in different periods of time, exploring the character's memories of familiar places.

It died for the stupidest of reasons; I wasn't happy with a single tileset that, looking back, actually looked great. What was the problem, Past-Talps? It's a shame because I really liked the story, and the concept of moving through time. I kinda would like to resurrect this project... maybe... one day.

Just a warning - the music track in the first area of the level might be copywritten.

2014 - Liangzhu [Small, Hard/Very Hard, KS+]

This level actually got a preview thread before I gave up on it; it generated a fair bit of excitement, so apologies to everyone I let down. :(

I wanted to make a levels using tilesets made in the Community Tileset Project. I once again had a plan for the whole level, including a sketch-map.

So why was it unfinished? Well. The story was miserable and I couldn't find a way to redeem it. And committing myself to using the Crystal Caves tileset for the whole level meant every area had to be a shade of turquoise that slowly causes your corneas to disintegrate. The project stalled and never got finished. Though I used some plans I'd made for this in 'Petals II'.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / Petals II [KS+ Hard/Large/Scenic]

I recall a grey warren of silent people, thinking of cold and shadow

Click here to download Petals II

Nine years, eleven months and nine days ago (yes, you're ooooold!), I released my first non-epic-length KS level, 'Petals of a Dying Flower'.

Later I had the idea of rebuilding part of that level with more complex graphics and colours and adding it to a rerelease of the level as a secret bonus. That idea turned into a full recreation of the level, and this is the result. You can decide if it's a sequel or a remake.

Petals II retells the story of a knytt woman setting out from her home in search of something more.

A special mention to Vegetal Gibber who helped me make this level look as lovely as it does, and for coming up with the idea of giving a knytt a lantern to carry her through the dark.

Hope you have fun!

I recall a grey warren of silent people, thinking of cold and shadow

When working on Dragon Myth, I had the idea to use Salmoneous' 'Lava' tileset to remake the underground prison section from 'Petals of a Dying Flower' and sneak it into an updated version of Petals as a reward for secret-hunters.

When I came to actually implement this idea (building my own new tileset based on the one from 'Dragon Myth'), remaking one area ended up turning into remaking the entire level. It very quickly became apparent that the finished product was going to end up being bigger and longer than the original game, and I eventually realised that I didn't want it to only be seen by the tiny number of people who might replay a nine-year-old level and hunt out all its secrets. So I cut it out of that game and set out to release it separately. Petals II is currently about three fifths of the way to completion.

I see a dark, empty prison with all its locks on the inside

Inspired by the original, this level reimagines and rebuilds each area from the ground up with (mostly) original tilesets, new layouts and challenges, and a few surprises thrown into the mix.

It also has colour.

All my memories are of darkness and cold, deep in my eyes and bones. Do I honestly believe there could be anything other than this?

Ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls, people of the jury and distinguished members of the world press...

...Allow me to tell you a story.

It is the story of a man.

That man's name...
...was LPChip.

LPChip was a man who enjoyed many things, including...
Administrating an indie videogame forum...
...Making bodacious music...
...And licking other people's cats...

...But what he enjoyed most of all...
...was searching for new stars with his telescope.

Every clear night LPChip would search for new stars...
...Even when the sleep deprivation was really bad...

(which might possibly help to explain all that cat-licking)

...And then one day, he realised that he had discovered one hundred totally new stars.

And so, LPChip decided to travel the world, telling everyone he met of his amazing accomplishment.

This is the story of what happened next.
This is his story.

This is...

LPChip!
Hooray!
Fun Time!

'LPChip Hooray Fun Time' is a community built level made by myself, Fubaka, Firecat, IxMarcel, Ultigonio, StraightFlame, Vegetal Gibber and canteven, with contributions by sergiocornaga, egomassive, BloxMaster and SiamJai, to celebrate the occasion of LPChip receiving his one hundredth star (which happened... four, five years ago? Ahem, anyway...)

The level features glorious unique tilesets, COs and music entirely composed by LPChip himself apart from the bits that were composed by other people, besides extensive use of KS+ features, an extended dream sequence, unrealistic weather effects, a magic carpet, a world-ending slood-related crisis, and one really tastelessly coloured signpost.

We who are listed above hope you enjoy playing it as much as we enjoyed making it, and we are sure you will join us in thanking LPChip for all he has done in hosting and maintaining these forums for all these years.

Thank you, LPChip. Thank you, and goodnight.

Dragon Myth
Click here to download version 3!

(This level requires Knytt Stories +)

My name is Juni.

I have lived all of my life in Muen Village, west of the Grey Mountains where the dragon lives.

When I was young the dragon would fly down and attack our village, destroying houses and fields, and carrying away animals and people to devour in its home.

Ten years ago the dragon returned to its lair and fell into a deep sleep.

Then, last night, it woke up.

I'm not going to wait here like a sheep in a field for it to come and kill me. I'd much rather die fighting than die afraid. So I'm going to go to its lair and face it.

And nothing is going to stand in my way.

Version two, the 'Oh gosh, why is there so much screaming' update, fixes two major bugs from the original release, as well as various minor tweaks and fixes and some minor story improvements.
Version two point one, the pedantic update, fixes one minor bug uncovered in a very belated piece of beta testing.
Version three, the NewGame+ update, adds a very exciting reward for those who find all five secret golden creatures. It also includes some SGE and minor bug fixes, new dialogue, and replaces some overly nasty challenges.

Hey chums, is it possible to retrieve the sound made by the elemental enemies (Bank 2, objects 18 and 19) as a .ogg file? I'd like to use it as a sound effect in 'Dragon Myth' (in this circumstance it's not possible to hide one behind a CO).

If anyone is able to do this, could they post the sound or PM it to me? T'would be a big help.

Thanks!

Knytt Stories Level Previews / [Small/Hard - KS+] Liangzhu
« on: November 19, 2014, 02:57:39 »
Hello! My name's Xianu and very soon you will be able to share my adventures in Liangzhu Cave!

This is the entrance to the cave!

Um, this place looks pretty scary...

Hey, whoever made that terrifying dragon fountain forgot to give it wings*! (What a dork!)

How come I have two braids but only one hair ribbon? What is this rubbish?!

'Liangzhu' utilizes two of the recent community-made tilesets and numerous OCOs. It features six levels, five hidden collectibles and a reward for finding them all, custom music, pretty places, and me, Xianu, a totally custom character!

Semi-original tilesets made to compliment the community-made tilesets, and most of the level's OCOs (including myself!), will be released for public use when the level is completed.

As of posting this, two of the six levels have been explored but I'm making good progress! Beta-testers will be requested when I'm closer to the end. Also, the guy who made this cave could use some help translucentifying (it's a word!) some objects - for example, the crystal bouncer in the second screenshot - so if anyone would like to volunteer for that it'll save him the embarrassment of asking!

See you soon!

*True story!

A certain someone just got 100 stars!

In celebration of this, a few of us have, in a secret location, been working on a collaborative level to honour this impressive achievement.

We've got a lot done but still have a little more work to do - indeed, if you've collected enough stars to know about the, uh... you know, the secret...  :shifty: feel free to come by and see if you can help.
(Gimme a break - frankly I think I handled that pretty well.)

Anyway, the level is a mixture of environmental and challengies with an emphasis on collecting collectibles - so if you like environmentals, challenges and collecting stuff, this is the level for you! So far, 6 forumites have given their contributions to the level - specifically, myself, Sergiocornaga, Firecat, Polana, Straightflame and Tablecat.
Hopefully some of them will add a screenshot to this thread to show what they've been working on. In the meantime, here's one of mine...

Knytt Stories Level Editing Support / Mines or Interesting Caves
« on: September 06, 2013, 19:46:22 »
Wondering if anyone has any opinions for particularly interesting cave or mine tilesets, as I'm a little tired of the default crowd. I'm specifically looking for rocky caves - not much like the colourful or built-up tilesets of 'IDotS' - and anything that's little-used or has come clever design applications. Gloomy and atmospheric would be nice but that's not exclusively what I'm after.

So if you could tell me of any nice sets you like, I'd be very grateful. Mine tilesets would be very handy, too. Cheers, chums.

I have gone against all I held dear and made an environmental level!

Download me!
No! No! Download me! I have a minor bugfix and am so much better than that rubbish old version!

No! Download ME! I have lots of edits and, frankly, I ROCK! Those old versions are LAME!

EDIT: Version 2 now released with some funky changes!

Spoiler: Version 2 Changelog (click to show/hide)

This was created for a KS competition. It's my first environmental and also my first KS level made for a KS mod; you'll need to download Egomassive's KS+ mod to play this level.

'I Chased the Moon' is a short environmental level depicting a moonlit journey through some pretty places. Focussing on atmosphere and ambience, it features some original, non-awful poetry written by me, some original tilesets and some glorious COs made by the brilliant Raicuparta.

Play it and please comment with your opinions! Feedback is wonderful!

Being lazy and reposting screenshots from the preview. If you want to see more, click the download link!

Currently working on this for the latest Knytt Stories competition.

Talps make an environmental! Surely not! It's ok! It has poetry in it, and poetry makes everything ok!

There's not much plot. It's a journey through a night-time environment with changing times and stuff. It's pretty (hopefully).

Currently about 2 thirds done and waiting for someone to get back to me about a tileset. I'll probably ask for beta testers once I get that far.

Features pretty environments, original poetry, a few original tilesets, custom music, some very lovely custom objects courtesy of Raicuparta, and probably some secrets if I can find space for one or two more hiding places. The level is being built with Egomassive's KS+ Knytt Stories Mod, so you'll need to download that to play this level.

Have some screenshots!

Knytt Stories Level Editing Support / CO and Tileset request
« on: October 21, 2012, 00:02:00 »
Illumination isn't really my strongpoint. :(

I've made this lighthouse for my upcoming entry for the current KS competition, but I'm lacking the skills to light it. If anyone could make me a CO of a light beam, I'd be very grateful. If not, it'll just not be switched on for the level.

I'm attaching a screenshot of the top of the lighthouse below, along with some surrounding screens for context, and a few isolated parts of the setup (feel free to edit and include these as part of the CO/a separate component CO/recoloured bits for me to put into the tileset if necessary. I don't really mind if I don't have a beam of light stretching into the empty screen on the left; it's up to you if you go that far.

Thanks is advance!

Also, beware my awful 'smooth' lighting.

Now I've gotta go draw a lighthouse interior...

Hello friends!

I want to ask if anyone can/will make some custom ambience for use in a KS+ level I'm working on, and/or possibly some music.

Can I just say that to give as good an experience as possible to the players I want to keep as much of the level under wraps as possible, so I'm rather loathed to post any details but inevitably I have to for this. So if you're not likely to be able to help me then I recommend you don't read further than this, though of course I can't stop you and, at the end of the day, it's your choice.

My ambience request isn't the same as what I asked for in the Hidden Star Inn.

Spoiler: Ambience (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: music (click to show/hide)

Thanks anyone who read; sorry my technical knowledge is very lacking. Hopefully that hasn't put you off. Please post here if you'd be willing to help with anything. I really want to make this a great level!
Contributors will receive full mention in the credits, including a link to your website/soundcloud/whatever.

Thanks again.  <3

*Goes to design horrible tilesets*

Wow! This level began development sometime around August 2010. And now, at last, it's here! My second epic-length level:

When I was a Child
I Dreamed of the Sky

Download me!
Mirror!
Mirror!

Juni has lived all her life in a tiny, underground village, told stories of monsters that dwell in the tunnels above, and yet her dreams are full of bright lights, open spaces and myriad other wonders that her reality lacks, and perhaps it's better to die seeking a mythical light than to dwell your whole life in shadow. On her journey towards the unknown world above, she will begin to uncover the mystery of why her people live in hiding, squalor and fear, as her actions disturb a long-sleeping danger.

I Dreamed of the Sky features a complex plot, bucket-loads of custom graphics, flags, cutscenes and my first attempt at a large puzzle. It's many screens long with over an hour's worth of gameplay.

Turn down the lights and turn up the volume. Explore, discover, awaken and dream...

(For anyone who plays and likes this and fancies a bit more of a challenge, you can check out the original, harder versions of the upper levels.)

15
I suppose this is my 'Monocromatica Grotta'.

This little level is actually a series of screens I originally made for the last quarter of 'I Dreamed of the Sky' but during testing I was told that they were too difficult, which surprised me because I didn't find them that hard; I guess I'm good with umbrella floating and laser timing. I didn't want to expunge them from existence, so while I made them easier in the level, I'm releasing the originals here!

If you're good with umbrellas and timing, you might have fun! If you're not, you might spend an hour on this and then rage-quit! Either way, it has some custom tilesets from 'I Dreamed', and an uplifting message at the end!  8D

Download me!

I'll take this moment to mention that 'I Dreamed' is nearly ready for the next stage of testing; one of the testers found two of the areas too dark so I need to change the gradient in one and edit the tileset of the other. And I'm not happy with the ending so I need to try out some different things there, but maybe I'll do that just for the final release. I'll try and get round to it this week, and then contact my beta testers.

Anyway, if you're feeling hardcore, play the level! If you're not, wait for the full version of 'I Dreamed of the Sky' and don't say you weren't warned!
Look out for the spinny red things (there's two).

I Dreamed of the Sky is now finished and released!
