Title: [Psychological/Environmental] A Long Walk
Post by: Dj Gopher on July 16, 2010, 19:53:15
Hello all :)

A Long Walk is a level that's been in progress for quite a while.
It follows a young girl on her search for the ghost of her father, and will feature original tilesets by Egomassive, as well as original music from various artists.

A few attached screenies can be found below, and there are a few others throughout the thread.
There is also a short beta in the releases section.

Thanks for reading,
Dj

I have never been able to figure out how to use the background mountains from that tileset. That's amazing.

Aye, good use of those tilesets! I still have nightmares about the time I used the ocean rocks one.

Oooooooh, *very* nice! Who'd have thought the sea landscape tileset would go so well with the graveyard one! It really does, though - it's a great combination! Looking forward to this.

(Dammit, now everyone's going to think I nabbed the idea for using the background rocks properly from you... ;-) Honestly, folks, I figured it out all on my own! ... Mind you, the general look of my area that uses the sea landscape tileset is quite different, anyway.)

:P
Properly..

Anyway
It's not a graveyard level.. that's just an intro scene :3
Main reason that the graveyard can't be walked through entirely is that it was a 45 minute screen, about an hour including custom objects :/
Most of the level is flash backs, and you find more and more why she's leaving throughout the level.
I dont know how much you will like the format.. but it will be unique :)

Edit:
@Talps:
It's messy work :/

I'm sorry, I have no means of comparison. Is that supposed to be long, or short? Because 30-45 minutes really isn't that rare for a quality screen, in my experience. Then again, I am naturally slow, and perfectionist, so my knytting speed may not be normal.

Interesting...

Ah. Unique... is... always valuable.

(Sorry. Farscape flashback. The word 'unique' always triggers that for me. ;-))

I get everything properly positioned first.. taking about 15-20 minutes a screen.. the scenery is done later. :P
The mountains alone took 30 minutes :/ I feel the same way though, if it's worth it...
Explains why your levels are so nice :)
Anyway..

I'm in need of a graphic designer because my tablet is broken.
I'll edit details into the first post.

Who leaves their windows open on a rainy day? :) Anyway, there's something very rewarding about seeing people use tilesets I make. I think you've made it to work better in dim light than I did. I'll send you the update as soon as possible.

Looking very good.

I'm a 45 minuter a screen too.  :P

Being that this level is heavily based on music, it is temporarily on hold until I have confirmed that I can use the tracks I have been basing it upon.

I really like that city tileset you used. I like it when people use urban enviroments in their Knytt Stories.

Excellent news! As commented on in the contest thread, there aren't all that many levels set "IRL", it'll be really interesting to see how this one goes.

Ok well due to severe issues in both plot and copyright, this story will have an entirely different approach and direction.
Everything you saw will likely remain, but serve a different purpose, such as the graveyard in the OP.
Until everything is set in stone I'd like to leave this direction somewhat unannounced..
Thanks everyone :)

Edit:
Some proof that this isn't abandoned  :^^:
(also the potential new title :P )

It's nice to here that you're continuing this. From the screens it looks good, but what's up with the green water? Is it a custom object?

I made it..
Most everything will be unique to the level, like tilesets, music and such.
Though some scenes will require those old cliche sets..

Could this topic be deleted, please?

Why would you want to do that? You can modify your original post to change the title to match your new level name if that is the problem. Just guessing of course.

I'm not going to delete this topic. If it were a new topic and it was made in error, sure. But there has been said lots of things in this topic, and there's no reason why this topic can't exist.

Feel free to edit your first post if you abandoned it or otherwise won't use this topic anymore and start a new topic if desired.

Delete this topic? Eh? Was this level abandoned after all that work and all those beautiful tilesets?
Title: Re: [Short/undefined] Wild World
Post by: egomassive on April 04, 2011, 05:53:55
It's not abandoned. It's just being reworked a bit, and the new title has yet to be decided. DJ Gopher and I have PMed quite a bit this year about the tilesets I was making for this level. I think DJ isn't making new announcements because he wants to work out all the details first, making sure anything he says is accurate, and because he doesn't want to spoil anything more. I've been sworn to secrecy on my last tilesets, but I'll tell you this much: I'm proud of my work.

Pretty much  :^^:
Sorry guys.. I haven't updated this in a long while, but that doesn't mean the level is gone!
I've been a little cramped with time, but with spring break coming, I hope to get a lot done.
As basic as it gets, I couldn't get permission for the song the level revolved around. I changed the topic, but the same jorneys and characters exist, just for different versions and at different times.
You can just about disregard everything but the images here.
I might edit the OP in the future.. :)

So my hard drive crashed..
I lost everything, but I do remember the overall concept of each screen enough to recreate them rather quickly..
Once I get a new computer I'll get working on that..
Sorry guys.

So I got linked to this, thought I'd give it a bump.

Hope everything goes well, Gopher; it seems like this will be a great level if/WHEN it's finished. I've got confidence. :3

Haha, thanks!
So.. I was a bit daunted by the whole 'entire project disappeared' experience, but I've been playing around here and there with rebuilding the level. Mostly all I've done so far is rebuild screens that I had screencaps of, but I'm hoping to get this back up to speed. :)

Wow, love the trees man.

Thanks. I made most of those tiles. I started out making a complimentary set to Fredrik Andersson's Thin Forest, but eventually his set was completely renovated to meet DJ Gopher's vision. I can't wait to see this level completed. I put a lot of work into it's tilesets, and I want to see what he makes with them.

DJ Gopher messaged me in May. He said,

I finally ported windows 7 onto my mac and have been playing around with the level a bit. Though it's nowhere near completion, I think I'll finish it over the summer.

Yes and no-
As I was rebuilding what I could remember and redesigning what I couldn't, I decided to change the storyline to give myself a fresh interest in making the level.
It's got a bit more of a story focus than it used to, but it'll feature the same areas built with the same lovely tilesets egomassive made. So, take that as you will :P
I think I'll also release a small proof-of-concept-type beta in the near future for anyone who is interested.

thanks for the continued interest guys :)
(would have responded sooner but I was on safari in Tanzania without internet)

Okay!
I toyed with the OP a bit, and.. a bit of a bump <3
Also things are coming along nicely, I don't want to make promises as I'm going through the whole college application process, but I think I'll be done fairly soon..
I know I've been saying that since late 2010, but I think it's true this time :3

I've been getting a lot done this Summer.
Everything is written, and only about 50% of it still needs to be implemented into the game. Hopefully I'll be done before school starts up. :)

No, no major updates, though I've been working every now and again on little things. I'm actually kind of stuck as to how develop the story towards the main ending. I have many secret endings made, along with a "good" ending, but I'm having trouble with the one...

I'll get it done eventually though, definitely eventually :)
