Knytt Stories / Knytt Reverse
« on: September 20, 2023, 23:17:52 »
Background
This exchange transpired a few days ago on Niffcord:
Quote from: Discord
Hmpf Macslow: Hey, why is the wind in Knytt world always blowing from the right? I'm making a level about a part of the (real) world where the wind is nearly always blowing from the west (left, in KS terms), and basically allll the trees in all the tilesets that are wind-bent are bent the wrong direction; the dust object blows only left to right; the leaf object likewise... 😄
Hmpf Macslow: (Are there custom objects that reverse the direction? But that still leaves all the trees.)
Pie: Mirror every tileset/screen and then add a sign that says right is west
Pie: Hmm...now I want to do that to The Machine for science
Lucinda: omg pls
As a result, I made a tool to generate a mirror image of any level.

Features
In addition to reflecting map data and graphical assets, it can
  • Adjust shifts, triggers, warps, map spoofing, and custom object offsets;
  • Adjust the default save file;
  • Replace objects with their mirrored versions if available (some are approximate, like birds and fish); and
  • Reposition wide objects (e.g. the wide spike bar, 6:1) if possible (it won't overwrite another object).
Object replacement/repositioning even works on custom objects that use vanilla object behaviors.

Some people requested silly features like reversing the music and cutscenes, so I have included those as options. Audio processing is handled by a separate command line program called sox which is bundled with this program. If you don't want to use it, just delete the sox folder.

Usage
For basic usage, drag the level's folder onto knytt_reverse.exe. It will create a new level in your worlds folder with "(reversed)" appended to the original level's name. The original level will not be changed in any way. If you want to change the options, run knytt_reverse --help on the command line or see the examples below.

Issues
I don't intend to spend any more time on this, but let me know if you run into any problems and I'll see if they can be fixed easily. Known issues are listed below.

Uurnog / Challenge [Hard] (Spoilers): Vault ending using 2 doors
« on: March 25, 2017, 07:09:20 »
Can you get the Vault ending by only unlocking two doors (period) and without entering the village? Obviously no cheat code or developer mode allowed. Every locked door you open counts, including the O door.

Knytt Stories / Story Crafter
« on: May 01, 2012, 23:32:28 »
During summer of 2010, I started working on a custom level editor for Knytt Stories, which I called Story Crafter, as a project to learn C#. I've worked on it now and then, and started over from scratch twice. My objectives were to combine all of my favorite features from the standard level editor, its various mods, KS Level Composer, and KS Manager in one powerful tool, to bring all the different parts of story development together in one piece of software, and to make tedious and time-consuming tasks easier and faster.

Now, Story Crafter is far from completion, and I am not currently working on it. Especially with ego's new mod and updates to GrayFace's, I'm not sure it is worth completing. However, if there is some interest in the community, I would be willing to finish it. To that end, I would like to show you what I have accomplished so far and what I had planned for the future. The editor is tab-based, so I will describe it tab by tab.

Spoiler: Opening screen (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Overview tab (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Screen tab (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Map tab (click to show/hide)

For the cutscenes tab, I was going to recreate the KS Manager interface but make it look nicer.

Spoiler: Tilesets tab (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Gradients tab (click to show/hide)

Music/ambiance tabs would be similar to the tilesets/gradients tabs.

The objects tab, which was never worked on in the slightest in any of the three iterations, was going to have something to do with custom objects. :P

Spoiler: World.ini tab (click to show/hide)

That's it. Let me know if you think you would use it! :)

Get to where the green arrow is pointing from where Saira is standing without leaving the screen. It's a very handy shortcut when you're charging up to leave the Austra system.
