Development Showcase / "The Morbid Mill" Video
« on: February 17, 2010, 20:24:16 »
Hey all,

If you remember or heard of my Knytt Stories project called "The Morbid Mill" -- it was a college project my friends Ian and Thomas were assisting me in. The project was voted best in the class and the teacher, Danial Young, wanted me to put together a video to be looped in their lobby's TVs along with other student works

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4sXpKweHY8

I wanted to share the video with you all as well, perhaps get some feedback. Please be professional and respectful

This is my first knytt Stories project, so you'll notice all the art and tilesets are custom, we focused on the gameplay first and ran out of time, but it came out well regardless

A download link for the game will be provided at a later date if anyone is interested
The game is catagorized as "Hard/Very Hard, Challenge"
The video does NOT show the story or cutscenes we added in, just the gameplay for show
All the music and most of the backgrounds are custom, the tilesets are the only things I left default -- other than the boat that EgoMassive graciously let me use

Please also note the video itself is not finished, but will be at a later date
Thank you!

Knytt Stories / Minimum System Requirements?
« on: January 12, 2010, 23:49:19 »
I'm finishing up my college project and documentation is part of the grade, for the Game Manual I am typing up it'd be nice if I could add a Minimum and Recommended System Requirement for Knytt Stores -- I know Knytt Stories doesn't really require much, but it'd be nice to know  C)

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

This is a project I've been working on with my team mates Ian and Thomas at the International Academy of Design and Technology.

A mysterious factory shuts down somewhere in the forbidden forest outside the village of Morbid. The parents did not tell their children why and the Elders pretended not to know, but Juni a young and curious girl, sneaks out of her parent's house in the dead of the night to discover for herself the secrets of this mysterious Morbid Mill.

She quietly escapes through her window, shivering slightly as the cold wind brushes her. She is started to see her brother, Tobah, standing on the roof with her. He questions her intentions, she explains her quest, and he does not argue. He hands her an umbrella, tells her to keep dry, but most importantly, come back alive.

As she transverses through the forest, she encounters a strange spirit that haunts her, taunting her with mind games and discouraging remarks, suddendly she trips and stumbles down an over grown shaft leading directly into the Morbid Mill, now possessed and haunted by the same demonic creatures that inhabit that forsaken forest.

Eventually she escapes the factory to see the forest in flames as the possessed robotics and demonic creatures raze it, she runs back to Morbid to see the same fate for her people. She packs into a small boat where the survivors spend 3 days traveling to the nearby city of Setian to seek refuge. Juni grieved with guilt and remose she plans to return to the factory to destory it and save humanity from the terror of the Mill. (super-summarized game plot)

Type: Challenge/Puzzle (Hard/Normal)

So, obviously, this isn't what most people may be used to, as from a lot of Knytt Stories games I've seen are rather serene and joyful... ehh... this is kind of, well, gloomy, however it starts off very dark it picks up right away to a heavy upbeat guitar rift sound as the player tackles all the challenges in this game.

The music, tileset authors, and all other related matieral in the game will be credited to their owners and creators.
Below I have posted screenshots...

Title Screen

Intro Text 1

Intro Text 2

The Town of Morbid

An example of our transition, a similar effect occurs on the screen Juni is in when she shifts to a change of enviroment

The first screen of the Forbidden Forest, here Juni just managed to escape some deadly spikes as she prepares to enter the next screen

One of Juni's first encounters with Syliva, the ghost of a young girl who died long ago now haunting the forest, she taunts Juni with mind games and discouraging remarks, this is also the screen where she stumbles down a long shaft over grown in the forest and finds herself deep within the Morbid Mill itself!

The coolant room of the factory

One of the screens in the main sector of the factory

Here, the umbrella is being used as a shield to block the incoming projectiles

Don't fall!

A screen from a strange forest she finds enclosed outside the factory, the path leads to an underground cave strangely locked with a key she can not find here

After finally escaping the factory she sees that the possessed robotics and demonic creatures have razed the forest! Her eyes water as the grim thought of Morbid suffering the same fate plague her mind, will she return in time?!

So there you have it, out of my testers it took the average gamer maybe an hour to complete the game so far (about half way done). The story is actually far more indepth with some twists and turns, but above is just a quick summary really... I'm just way too tired to write out the whole thing right now, but you get the idea

Since we are also being graded on documentation, I wrote a short Enemy Guide Manual to be attached to a full-on game manual I'm writing, the link to download it is here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/6epmtc - it is in .doc format

Music used is from the soundtrack of the games Quake, Quake II, Heretic/Hexen, and Doom II.

Collaborations / Spriters: Wooden Boat
« on: December 19, 2009, 00:31:06 »
Hey Knytt Forums community,

I'm looking for a spriter to create a wooden boat for Juni and a few other knytt people to climb aboard when escaping their hometown of Morbid. End to end I'm looking it to be 5 squares wide and 2 squares tall.

If you would like a screenshot of the area it will be in than I can supply that.
The deadline for this project is Feburary, so I hope to get this done by then, you of course will be credited for your work and a link to your personal website or URL can be posted in the credits as well

This project is for a college assignment at the International Academy of Design and Technology.

Thanks  8)

Knytt Stories Level Editing Support / Fire-function? Weapons?
« on: December 14, 2009, 08:59:37 »
Curious to know if the Knytt Stories engine is applicatable to have weapons of some kind, I did see however in Mushroom Engine that you can get enemies to be vanquished by jumping on them -- how would I go about coding something like that?

Thank you

Knytt Stories Level Editing Support / Looping Music
« on: December 13, 2009, 21:22:16 »
I notice when playing on several screens which use the same track, after a while, once the track ends -- it doesn't loop... is there a way to change this so it plays indefinatly?

Knytt Stories Level Previews / The Morbid Mill, College Project
« on: December 12, 2009, 16:21:16 »
Hey there, I'm Dustin and I'm a student at the International Academy of Design and Technology undergoing a B.A. Degree in Video Game Designer, I have 4 years pervious experience in the field working at Amaze Entertainment as Production Intern

We were assigned in Game101 to create a small game using the Knytt Stories level editor and I wish to make the most out of this engine. We were assigned two other team members. There is Ian, Thomas, and I.

I wish to get this concept out in the open in case anyone had any suggestions or comments, possibly tilesets or unique codes or scripts I can alter or modify to wow the audience and instructor, I really wish to make an impression

Any help at all is greatly apperiated from fellow game designers  :^^:

Here is a summary of the entire story I have thus far, subject to change...

A factory deep in the forbidden forest arruptly shut down close to the nearby town of Morbid, the parents would not tell why, the Elders pretended not to know, but Juni - a curious and foolish young girl - sneaks out of her parent's house in the dead of the night to find out for herself.

Venturing through the forbidden forest, avoiding several creatures of darkness as well as a shadowing ghost that seems to know her, she stumbles and falls down a long shaft overgrown in the forest finding herself deep within the factory.

As she transverses through the factory, she realizes what has happened here as the factory has been overran with strange demonic beings of unknown origin which has possessed the robotics. Eventually, she finds an escape leading back into the forbidden forest to see these demonic creatures has been released! She hurries back to Morbid

Arriving at her hometown she finds it it flames and under attack by the demonic creatures, avoiding them and certain death, she reaches her home to find her family killed... she moves on to find a boat at the end of town by the water where surviving towns people are making an escape, she hops in as the towns people wonder where she had been.

They reach new land in the nearby city as they go to warn the Mayor of the pending threat. Juni realizes she must go back herself and stop the invasion herself by re-entering the factory and finding means to destory it.

Taking an alternate approach, she travels by sea to find an underground cavern dug deep within a mountain which resides directly under a wing of the factory where supplies were secretly recieved. She finds an entrance there and proceeds underground to find the factory's generator. Using parts found in the cave, she manages to turn it back on again -- giving electricty to the factory once more. She over powers the generator intentionally and makes haste out of the cave and back to sea. Soon after, the factory explodes in a firey shockwave as the entire forest is flatten, her old town blown away, and the factory shattered to pieces, killing all the demonic creatures that reside there.

She returns to see the aftermath, and meets once more with the shadowy figure that follows her, the ghost thanks her for freeing her from a curse that plagued her, that she (the ghost) was responsible for the outbreak... she explains her story... thanks Juni once more for her bravery, and fades into the wind.

Juni returns to the city and to her people, starting a new life among them as a writer, writing a novel based off her experiences at Morbid, the Forbidden Forest, and the long forgotten Mill of Mobid.

Thoughts or comments please, we are also looking for anyone willing to create a small intro-animation if someone has free time and is great with Flash. You will of course be duely credited for your work and will be the first to get a link to it's download  :P

Any other help is greatly apperiated, thank you for reading

I hope this is the right place to post this, but I was curious if there was a possible way to create animated cutscenes, and how do I do this?

This is for a college project and it's due sometime at the end of the month, so I hope for an answer very soon, thank you  :^^:

Also, I'm curious to know if you can actually set motion paths and actions for NPCs outside of cutscenes

Edit: One more thing, about music, will anything work as long as it's in .ogg format? Or will I need to name it something specifically like 'song21'
