Saira / Re: Just, amazing
« on: October 09, 2014, 07:58:18 »
But the important part, the gameplay. I've been a fan of platform games since I played the first Prince of Persia baaack then and loved it. It was just the fun of making sharp and precise jumps, grabing ledges, watching how the Prince cheated death just by some centimeters, and while it wasn't mind blowing action and acrobatics, it was fun. Well, nowadays, is really hard to find platform games that give you that feeling. Most of them doesn't feel natural, or as precise, not even the popular Prince of Persia reboot for the PS2. Games like Assassin's Creed, which are about parkour and whatnot, while fun, they don't really nail that aspect (mostly because it's not what they want, but whatever). Mirror's Edge is one of the games I can say does exactly that. It requires a lot of skill, and when you do it right, it feels good. Well, this game does exactly that. It turns platforming, jumping, wall jumping and more, into something fun. Something that doesn't turn repetitive or boring. That's one of the reasons I could play the game without raging. There are some parts that are fairly hard, yet I could just shrug it off and keep playing. The platforming is really good. Is simple, is sharp, precise, is fun, fast. There's really nothing I can say here. It may seem silly to some to write a paragraph this big without actually saying nothing, but this is REALLY a big deal in this kind of game, because it's what keeps it fun.

I understand your point and agree completely. Given that, I can't recommend Knytt Stories enough. Nifflas' own levels are all fantastic and, after that, there are at least a few dozen inarguably brilliant user levels. It can be a bit of a hassle hunting for the best amongst all of them out there but it's easy enough to get recommendations, and those usually with download links included. There are some equally good, equally free, modded versions of KS aswell but I'm wary of burying you in recommendations.

I'm a big fan of nearly all Nifflas' other games aswell but I'll spare you any more evangelising :P There are a lot of different styles and genres of game so some people get disappointed rummaging through the back catalogue, just to warn you. The quality is always high but, inevitably, not every game is to the taste of every user.

Now, the other big part of the gameplay. The puzzles. I don't know if the whole photo system was made before, or something similar, in a game. But it was refreshing and great. I love puzzles games, and this game does it right. It has puzzles that make you think, yet don't involve pixel hunting or ridiculous hard things. And the whole "take a photo" aspect just gives the puzzles this bit of fresh air that they needed.

I'm not aware of any games that had used it at the time but there's a game called Snapshot by (amongst others) Kyle Pulver. Unfortunately, it appears that the demo's no longer available (though this was mostly a very long-winded way of saying that I think it was an original concept in Saira).

Anyway, I wrote a lot of stuff, sorry for whoever who has to read that (if anyone at all will). I'm sorry for this sloppy review, but I just had to say it somewhere. Is a real shame the game won't have more episodes of nothing like that, but I get that making a game isn't an easy task. I will, however, keep an eye on anything that may come from this developer, if any, I don't really know.

Short version. I loved the game. It' gameplay elements are perfect and it has a strong and unique personality, which makes the game for me. Kudos to the developer.

There was a period after the release of people, on a semi-regular basis, signing up to the forum to rant about how much they hated Saira and then disappear again. It was all a bit unpleasant, in no small part because most muppets with an anger-management problem choose to shout it from the rooftops, while very few satisfied players take the time share their opinions. As much now as it was then, it's a real pleasure to hear from on of the latter. :^^:

You needn't be, that was mostly the nicotine withdrawal talking. It's easy to miss things with the ropey formatting in those posts; it would be easier without the nested spoilers and crowds of notes but with such a large list the first page would become a nightmare to scroll through.

Levels with titles in black or blue should have alternate download locations. The levels with purple titles are the ones for which I couldn't find any alternate source.

There are more than that available, and I'm sorry it's such a mess, but I'm dying for a cigarette and all this information is available in the OP where I already typed it all!  :moody:

Knytt Stories Level Releases / Re: A Taste of LIMBO
« on: February 16, 2014, 07:02:01 »
@ Everyone: Although this may have been made with KS+, it doesn't use any KS+ features. It is a normal KS level.

I thought it was (though I wasn't certain of it) but I've got quite a few levels already listed that are equally standard. I really ought to cut them out but, since I'm not sure exactly on which side of the line some of them fall, I've been putting it off. Not to mention the fact that it feels a little mean spirited to cut people's levels, even if I had no business adding them in the first place :/

To make it easier for people to download, you can create a direct link by right-clicking Download on the Knytt Stories Level Archive and selecting "Copy Link Location" or "Copy Shortcut" from the dropdown menu. You can then paste the full link into you post exactly as you would any copied text. The forum software will automatically recognise it as a hyperlink;
Code: [Select]
http://knyttlevels.com/levels/holopunk%20-%20A%20Taste%20of%20Limbo.knytt.binhttp://knyttlevels.com/levels/holopunk%20-%20A%20Taste%20of%20Limbo.knytt.bin

Alternatively, you can use the URL tags to make any text you want act as a link to the download;
Code: [Select]
[url=http://knyttlevels.com/levels/holopunk%20-%20A%20Taste%20of%20Limbo.knytt.bin]A Taste of Limbo[/url]A Taste of Limbo

Knytt Stories / Re: How big is your KS directory?

Here's unpacked one: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/44735333/ks/KSExForBadAV.rar
Extract it into KS Ex folder, add all files into AV exceptions and run Knytt Stories\KSExForBadAV\RunKSEx.bat.

Thankyou, that works perfectly! :)

Knytt Stories / Re: Having trouble with a bunch of levels

Bear in mind that half a dozen of the levels are totally non-functional (probably incomplete uninstalls) and some of the others have problems (ranging from inconsequential to near-terminal) aswell.

No. There is some archive with 100 tilesets grabbed from the old forum I've downloaded long time ago. I can't find any link to it and I don't have original archive any more, but I have them in the folder named 'Widget', so I thought it was ou who had made it.

Oh, my apologies. I've never seen that, myself. I can only assume I chose a handle that had previously been used by someone else  It's certainly not a particularly original username, though it's the first time I've run into this sort of confusion over it.

[...] they're from Widget's collection.

 Qué?
I've actually never created a tileset, level or collection of levels for KS, or any other Nifflas game. I assume you mean TheYeIIowDuck's "Epic Old Knytt Stories Level Dump" which was (and still is) being shared as a torrent in the Knytt Stories Level Releases forum? All I did for it was create a content list and find a few alternate download locations.

Hmm, I don't remember that in Cave Story... But then I never got all the way to the end so maybe I missed something.
Spoiler: Re: Talps (Off-topic) (click to show/hide)

Due to unfortunate news about Advena and overall forum sluggishness, I've decided to release a screen-shot of a custom character I'm working on. I'm having a long weekend which I'm using to make some progress.

The custom character looks great; it'll be a lot of fun looking at that and giggling to myself.
It's a fantastic piece of spriting. I'm once again dumbfounded at the detail you've managed to get in such a small image. I struggle to even resize an icon without obliterating all the fine detail, to say nothing of the messes I've made of RM2k sprites trying to effect a simple recolour; and those are twice Juni's size

Hypnagogia (v1.62) by plural

Let me know if there are any problems with it.

Since the level is once again available from plural, in the OP, I've deleted it from my box account.

I've just tried to repackage 100 Rooms and You (ready to upload it to my Dropbox account as a stop-gap measure) only to make the embarassing discovery that I forgot to download it after adding it to the thread.

My apologies for the oversight but it seems I can't reupload it even with the permission

The sendspace link was the only download location for that level. I'm afraid I'm not willing to reupload it myself unless he asks me to, as I've no idea if he wants it remain available or not. I can only recommend you try sending him a PM to ask.

I hope it's not been an unpleasant surprise to come back to what I've done here
If it is an issue I'll decommission my thread or, short of that, I could add just about anything you'd like to the introduction, notes or guides.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / Re: TheYeIIowDucK's KS Level Dump
« on: August 31, 2013, 09:53:42 »
Oh, I didn't really want you to fix it or anything, I just pointed it out. The problem stood out for me because in your list the levels are sorted by level folder name, so "Speed up" appears in the I group instead of M. I know there are quite a few levels with similar problems, and the correct level name may be either one, so there's no general rule to apply (knyttlevels.com uses the .ini name, I figure because that's where the version number is usually included for modified levels).
I'd organised the list in this fashion to make it as easy as possible to use as an index for TheYeIIowDucK's torrent; I didn't stop to think about how useful it would be for any other purpose (e.g. to check for a specific level, or compare to another collection). I could add a comment to that level (and other's like it) if it would help make clear what the folder "should" have been called. In fact, if anyone thinks the index could be improved in any way, I'd love to get some more points of view on other aspects aswell.
[Edit]: Come to think of it, I could try to come up with a format for a "dummy" entry, so that the folders mismatched with their levels would appear under both letters (although not counted for the subtotal and possibly just pointing to the main entry).

Great job, by the way! C)
Thankyou very much. I just hope I'm not stepping on too many toes with this; it feels a little like swooping in to steal credit for the work of TheYeIIowDucK and the levels' authors
