...have you looked at the main page (http://nifflas.ni2.se/) lately?

I don't really like it either I think it's too bland.

I agree, it is somewhat bland. At least capitalize the "n" in nifflas's Games! :P

Umm... well, it DOES say that he might work more on the design...

I think that the interface is better, but I rather liked the.. condensed look of the old site.

Needs work.

I liked the minimalism of the previous site, but it was impossible to expand with the content I would like to, I already had to do dodgy weird stuff like popup windows for the Knytt Stories expansions. It's a bit ironic though that each of my website designs have always been told to be a lot worse than my previous one (so I saw this comming, it happens every time), yet nobody can deny that my first website looked absolutely horrible.

I mean, check out one of these early ones:

:( I liked the old one... dont have a particular problem with the new one, except my crappy browser (IE5 [im on a mac 9.1, shuddup])  cant load any of the pictures XD

Everybody always likes the old one XD, and during a transistion over like 8 websites going from "absolutely horrible" to "it's quite ok", where each step in between having been a downgrade from the previous one... If it's not a paradox then I don't know what is. I mean, during the first few re-designs I took the comments seriously, but I guess I should take them as a good sign as I'm getting a massive Braid Level 1 vibe here.

Now of course, the serif font needs cleartype to look good, but everybody uses cleartype today, right?

I was really tricky and Internet Archive'd and found several (http://web.archive.org/web/20040512185533/guestbook.ni2.se/) archived (http://web.archive.org/web/20050307013820/nifflas.ni2.se/guestbook/index.php) guestbooks (http://web.archive.org/web/20060430135342/nifflas.ni2.se/guestbook/) with stuff like "great new site you got here", "Nicklas: great site.", "Love this new site. :)", "I'm not gonna say "I liked the old design better", because I like this one in a different way. ;)", "This site design is IMO a littel bit better than the previous.", "I like this design as I liked the old one. Nah, no way... I like the new one better =)", "Think I like the new site better. ;)", "Hey mate!! great design, I like it! Good job", and "hey m8, I like this design best :)".

I think you underestimate your web-design skillz. (But yeah that one image is pretty awful.)

Perhaps I was lucky with people's opinions that time X) I'm not underestimating my web design skills by the way, what I'm really saying is that I'm just not bothered that much with opinions. I'd care about what a designer would tell me, but most people think Windows Areo* looks good which is a clear signal that I shouldn't listen to the masses.

I may be dull, but I don't see a horribly major overhaul. Meaning, it's not all that different, stylewise, still sort of simplistic and such. Which I like.
I liked how it all was centered on the previous design, but other than that there's not much I feel forced to get newly used to...so yeah I don't really have complaints. Regardless of that you didn't even ask for comments in the first place. X)

I liked the way the old one was like a cute little miniature website all centred in the middle - it suited the style of your games. I can see why it needed a redesign to make room for your new games, but like everyone else I can't say I'm particularly fond of the new one.

I think its ok.
It would be a little better if you centered it and padded it down a little though.

I think the Knytt Stories page should hint that more levels can be downloaded from the forum (or from the http://www.knyttlevels.com/ website once it is finished  :P )

I hope this isn't bumping but practically, I don't mind the new site layout, but I absolutely DO mind the fact that the "Third Party Pack" Expansion Pack disappeared...

Oh and why does the forum banner link to nifflas' page, not the forum? :|
Title: Re: New site design

..because why should it link to a place your already at?

Oh and why does the forum banner link to nifflas' page, not the forum? :|
Because we also have a home button that links to the index. Otherwise it would be redundant. Besides, the forum is part of the entire site, so atleast one link should be present.

because the regular buttons arent big enough, and I have to search to my screen to find them :(
And I always like to see the homepage if anyone posted anything yet

and its even labeled support forum... how deceiving

Post by: LPChip on October 10, 2009, 11:33:45
I might be able to change the link from the banner, but unfortunately I'm not able to change the location of the home button. And since I want at least one link to the main site, thats the one I used.
Title: Re: New site design
Post by: Miss Paula on October 10, 2009, 11:41:30
actually I used it. 9_9
But yeah, there's a home button, so it would be redundant to have the banner link to the index too. also the link "tree" always links back to the index. So yeah.
Title: Re: New site design
Post by: Dataflashsabot on October 10, 2009, 12:49:02
Yeah, I find it logical to have a 'home' button to return to the forum index and the banner linking to what the forum is about. :)
Title: Re: New site design
Post by: LPChip on October 10, 2009, 15:15:42
I've now added an additional link in the linktree, which might enable me to change the banner to the index of the forum.

That's a really clever solution!
Title: Re: New site design
Post by: LPChip on October 10, 2009, 15:46:08
I found out that the link to the mainsite (in the banner) is actually in the template itself. Since the WaDF theme doesn't use a text in the banner, I left it unchanged. The Knytt banner which actually says "Nifflas' Support Forum" has been changed to link to the forum. Both have a link to the main site in the linktree now, and while I was busy with the template anyway, I finally fixed something that bugged me for quite a while now. Stickied topics are now seperated from normal topics with a small line. That'll make it easier to see them too.

an option to turn the additional 'nifflas.ni2.se' link before 'Nifflas's Support Forum' would be nice, because I'm always clicking where the forum home used to be, but going to the home home page.

Post by: LPChip on October 12, 2009, 08:21:49
I'm sorry, but I can't make it optional.

The link is purple which should be your warning. You'll quickly learn how to click the right link. (yes, I too always use that link, and yes, I too clicked it wrongly the first few times.)

Btw, I also changed the banner on the WaDF theme now.

You'll get over it eventually. Stop complaining about it, because nobody can change it.

I think it's good. I don't click it by accident.

Same. The fact that it's pink has made me LESS likely to hit it.

I dont like the main page either. The previous one was smart because of it's simpleness, and because it originally fitted in a small space, like all Nifflas games. Why not make a new website? But the new website has nothing more to give, and it has this aweful large title. It has no design in it, and it's a real shame for Nifflas' games are very original. Another thing (that was true with the old site too) Why isn't there a direct link to the forum? Nobody cares about the "community page", it has nothing to say.

With regards to the link tree solution - it's a great idea and I haven't clicked on it accidentally, but it is frustrating that it links to the main page in the same window, but the link back to the forum from the main page opens in a new window. You should be able to switch back and forth in the same window, or at least have some consistency by making them both open new windows.
Title: Re: New site design
Post by: LPChip on November 25, 2009, 23:23:37
I made the link to the forum, and Nifflas made the link back. Although I agree that it would be easier to navigate back in the same window, its not always the case that you want to navigate back. Sometimes you start at the main page, and you want to access the forum in a separate window. I guess I could make the navigation open in a new window very easily, but I guess you don't want to navigate to the main site from the forum in a different page.

Nifflas, if you have some thoughts about this, let me know and we'll work it out together.

I don't know how it's a big deal really, everyone with firefox should just have the reflex to left or ctrl+click something to open it in a new tab, and I adjusted to the pink link in a few minutes so I have no understanding at all how somebody can not used to it. Perhaps those people just need to pracice to adapt.

Teper's point about the forum link is valid, it just works the way it does because I currently don't have the feature in my CMS to link from the menu to something that's not a site document and right now I need to focus on my games instead of CMS addons. Anyway, I grow tired of hearing about every new site design I do sucks compared to the previous one and how the old one was much more personal or original or whatever. Set up a direct bookmark to the forum if you think the new design is so horrible. I like the design, and I won't change it. This is no longer subject to open debate.
