Within a Deep Forest 2
Before you ask, yes, there was already a topic about this. However, it had a really bad title, was filled up with a bunch of unrelated stuff (since it started out as something else), and the person who started it vanished about a month ago with nary a trace. And yes, I do have permission from Nifflas to do this. I PMed him asking if he would rather I not do it, and he responded, "Ah, no! I've never been against fangames :)"
Any questions may be directed towards me either via this thread, PM, or IRC.
IRC
If you're planning on helping out, please meet up with us on IRC at least once a week. If you have a standalone IRC client (like mIRC), type in "/server irc.esper.net" followed by "/join #WaDF2". If you're using niffchat, just type "/join #WaDF2". Or if you have an IRC client that can use it, just click this link: irc://irc.esper.net/WaDF2 (http://irc://irc.esper.net/WaDF2)

NOTE: The only people who will need GM Pro (or Game Maker at all, for that matter) are any programmers. Having at least the Lite version and knowing the basics is a plus, though.
Tileset, background, and music designers:
Just put something up that you think might fit, and me and OSad will judge it. We may from time to time also request a tileset, background, or piece of music that fits a specific style.
Level designers:
First and foremost: if you have an idea for a level, make sure it has a purpose, usually getting you a new ball skin. We don't want pointless levels that serve no purpose.
Also, vague ideas for levels are a big no-no. We don't want ideas; we want levels. Make at least a general map of the level, for example a black and white image file where each black pixel represents a solid wall. It will also help you to know that there are 25 rows and 20 columns of tiles in each room. Then, if/when we approve your map, you can go ahead and make a more detailed version. This is where it could come in handy to have Game Maker and a basic knowledge of it, because then you could put your level into it directly, which makes things easier for everyone.
Programmer(s):
YOU MUST HAVE GAME MAKER PRO 8 OR HIGHER TO BE A PROGRAMMER
In addition to being able to code the equivalent of every drag and drop button's function, you will also need be able to work with the following things:
* Views
* Activating/deactivating instances
* Loading resources from a file
* All types of variables, including strings
* Reading and writing from text files
* Essentially all of the existing commands (except for 3D and multiplayer)
I will hopefully be making a test for would-be programmers to take, but you may apply before I publish it.

This is great! Unfortunately, I am of no real help. I use Construct, am no good with Game Maker, and there are way better graphical designers here on the forums. I'll be waiting with much anticipation. ;)
EDIT: Hmm... Maybe I'm not entirely useless. I cooked up a banner for your useage :D

Awesome, thanks!

I think i may be of some use :3 music wise, mind you I dont have the best "recorcing software" (i have a crappy 5 dollar mic, and a guitar XD)
heres one piece i made linked through the forum...

im a bit lazy right now and don't want to find the mediafire link lol
maybe it's good :D

So.. has anything happened since the thread last existed?

So.. has anything happened since the thread last existed?
I've basically programmed the framework for a lot of stuff, although I have yet to put in anything gameplay-wise besides the tutorial level. I switched to a new computer as well, which negated my license for quite a while, so I wasn't able to do anything for that period except brainstorm. BloxMaster has also joined the project. Razzorman has also created two of the tracks for the game, and they are quite good in my opinion.
The main reason for creating this new thread, however, was to have an organized thread specifically for this project that I had control over, since the last one was originally for something else and the person who made the first post has vanished, so I can't use it for updates.
And if you're on the project, please start getting onto the IRC channel for it. It makes communication a lot easier and I'd rather have us all familiar with doing that from the start, instead of trying to integrate it halfway through.
-
I would like to be a programmer, as usual.
- I have GM 7 Pro.
- I know all the stuff you listed except for the code equivalent of "Execute a piece of code". XD
- I'm not too good with 3D and I don't know multiplayer at all but these aren't needed.
- Pick Yer Poison is more or less 4294967295 times better than me at GM, because he made an isometric building cre- argh never mind
And all that only if I have time to get on the IRC channel. Too much homework. I hate November.
No real need to worry, though, because as soon as the Chanukah holiday ends (around Dec 20th), the year will be much less stressed.

Heh, thanks. Welcome to the team! It'll be great to have another programmer on board. :) And I think the code equivalent is execute_string(string). :P
And all that only if I have time to get on the IRC channel.
As long as you can get on at least once a week, things should be fine. That would be the bare minimum, though; if you can get on more often that that, please do.
In fact, I think I'll go add that point to the first post.

That's a lot. O_o
I'll try to get on the IRC a bit more now, okay?

Hi guys! In case you are wondering, I am ACWL on the IRC and on the lists at the top of the thread. Glad to see a nice thread for WaDF2 PYP, guessing that you managed to get GameMaker re-registered. Seeing as we currently don't need any graphics, I'm going to be making userbars, so give me a little bit and I'll post them up (I haven't started yet, 1300 word essay to complete first).
OK! here are the first two Userbars!

I think you messed up there. I'm youffle214, not 124. X) (214 comes from 2/14 = my birthday)
-
@ACWL: Awesome userbars! Thanks!
@youffle214: Gah, I coulda sworn I put 214. Sorry.

There are people more qualified for this, of course, but I think I could contribute quite a bit in the graphics department. I consider myself able to match Nifflas' (old?) style quite well (http://imgur.com/SBqw2.png), and have enough spare time.
I also know a bit of GML, but since I no longer use Windows, pretty much the only thing I can do is contribute advice on that front.

Certainly! I'd like you to submit an art sample; any kind of tileset you think is good would work, or a good piece of art in general. :) And please, don't write "SAMPLE DON'T USE THIS" all over it; it makes it hard to see. And I can promise you that I won't use anything without permission. XD
-
And please, don't write "SAMPLE DON'T USE THIS" all over it; it makes it hard to see.
That's why you use watermarks. You can't erase them so easily, but you can still see the picture.
-
This projekt ounds fun, good luck.

I wanted to make it humorously obvious that it shouldn't be used; that's a KS tileset. (And don't use it in KS, either.)
You mentioned a tileset, but I really need more information than "a tileset." Namely, I need to know what dimensions the tiles need to be. 24x24? 16x16? 32x32? I wouldn't know!
-
Just a standard KS 24x24px should do (Try to get it at 72ppi). I would post the one I made, But I have had a little difficulty in finding it (PYP? Help please?)
EDIT: I meant ppi
-
72 DPI? DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. That doesn't make sense in this context at all.
-
whoops, i meant 72ppi, my bad (this info only really goes for programs like PhotoShop (which i use) which can use a custom ppi. (I managed to scan an image in at 12,000ppi XD)
-
Oh. Huh. Coulda sworn I put a post in here saying it was 24x24. Anyway, here's the one ACWL gave me as a sample:
I'd prefer it if you can match the style used in WaDF 2, by the way.
-
The WaDF 2 style is basically the same style as Knytt, just even more on the minimalistic side. And darker.
Also, I'm sorry that I can't draw anything right at the moment; maybe in a week or so. I've been really, really busy.
-
Sure, that's fine. Just send it in when you can.
-
I wish I was here sooner. This could have been saved.
Or is it still going? It is a mistery.
Nevertheless, it looks like I'm not needed here. PYP has everything under control so tattle-doo.

It's pretty dead, actually...demotivation kills so many projects. >.< I haven't even opened the file for a long time...
-
Yet you have all those WaDF2 banners on your signature.
That says something. :shifty:

That's true, it does. I should probably remove those, though, I tihnk this is well and truly dead. :/
-
Heh, whatever then. I was more than willing to get this up and running again, but with my main programmer out of the game, it's discouraging.
Whatever. It was fun while it lasted.
-
Wish I could have joined, but I use GM6.1 as per Yo Yo Games' inability to give me a working key.
Otherwise, I had the required knowledge, check it out: http://NickSYS.com/ has all my Game Maker work.
-
Can I do the music?
(I do have game-maker lite as well)
-
Well, the project is abandoned, and I already made music for the three levels already in the game. I guess you could help out if PYP ever decides to pick it back up though, but I'm not sure if that will ever happen. :/
-
I am currently quite busy, however I own Game Maker 8 Pro, so once I have finished all my crap, I might be able to pick this up. I'm not as good as PYP (I'm still getting my head around it), but i'll see what I can do.
-

Yeah, and it was such good music too. :(
On a lighter note...
I may have been wrong about how this project was going. I'm hearing a fairly decent negative response to my abandoning of this, which proves wrong the main reason I stopped (I felt like there was next to no-one working on the project), so I might pick it back up. No guarentees, though; I probably won't.
-
Wait a sec... <DEAD>!? How is that possible!?
-
Mostly demotivation.
-
I say we have a Motivation campaign for PYP!
-
Let me surprise you in a couple of days.

This is a demo. Nothing is set in stone. Ball speed/bounce height, graphics, nothing. I worked on it because I always wanted to make a bouncing ball game, ever since I played WADF, and I uploaded it here because in case programming of the old project was hard, I might be able to open a new path.
Also, some other ball ideas:
- Ceramic ball Resists heat
- Phasing ball Teleports above/below current point
- Illuminating ball Lights dark areas
So...anyone interested?
-
So.. vdweller's taken over the WaDF sequel project.
-
neat :D
i like where this is going C)p
-
...I uploaded it here because in case programming of the old project was hard, I might be able to open a new path.
Oh, if only it were that simple. The programming was fine; it was mostly a lack of motivation, a lot of it on my end. Seems I'm not quite cut out to lead large projects. X) The fact that the co-leader of the project (OSad) up and vanished without a trace, leaving me to scramble to hold up his end, didn't really help either.
Although I do like where you're going with this. I'm gonna tentatively remove the <DEAD> tag from the topic. I'm also going to look at what you've made from a programming perspective; it's entirely possible you've made a better engine.
*prepares for influx of "holy cow" messages*

My assumption that you met difficulties with the engine was a daring one, and I apologize if I seemed to underestimate what you have done so far.

No worries, I wasn't offended. It was an entirely reasonable assumption, and is often the cause of these sorts of problems. :)
-
I would be happy to be a graphics person. Put me in :)
-
well, if this is alive again, i think i'll re-enrol for graphics :D
Give me a shout if ya need help. I'm not exactly a pro at GM, but i know what i'm doing (mostly), and i often find another mind makes problems 1/3 as hard.
Frik it, if ya want, i'll help with programming (once my laptop gets back from repair :/)
-
Hey vdweller you still working on that pixel monster game?
-
Whoah, whoah, whoah. I'm not leading this again. I reopened it under the impression that vdweller wished to take over. If he didn't, then I'm going to have to change it back to <DEAD>. :/
-
Hey vdweller you still working on that pixel monster game?
Well, this might seem dirty, but I never actually stated I was actively developing such a game. I just drew some pixel monsters, leaving the possibility for future use open.
Now, on topic.
Working on a full-time job can really drain one's mind. I just need to find my pace again. But before anything else, I'd like to clarify a few things:
1) I have started working on a "bouncing ball" game. I don't plan to connect it in any way to WADF, so it can't be considered a sequel. I also understand that, given this, I should probably create a new, separate WIP at the dev. showcase section.
2) Programming a "bouncing ball" game in Game Maker with a 2D Physics Engine extension is unfathomably easy. It only took 3-4 hours to put the demo and those 3 bouncing ball types together. The problem is, it's hard to cooperate with another programmer because my coding, albeit functional, sucks major a**, is sloppy, I use 3 lines to do a thing that would normally require 1, and I comment what I do poorly.
3) About graphics. My principle is that I always make graphics for a game I'm working on. Well, it's more like a compulsion rather than a principle. So, this brings us to...
4) Music and level design/ideas. Simple physics puzzles. Area themes. This is what I could use. Especially music.
5) I may not be a game making guru, but I know this one thing: The more people discuss about how a game should be done, the less possible it will be that this game will ever be completed. Chats, MSNs, conversations over and over again, just to put a few banners and screens and that's all. So staying silent and only communicating for serious development issues may actually help a game being completed.
Taking into consideration all of the above, I, vdweller, the person who resurrected this topic by posting a half-assed demo, declare the following:
1) I will not post anything in this topic from now on. When I have something good to show of this project, I will create an appropriate thread in the dev. showcase section.
2) Every request for (additional) graphics, music, level design ideas, will come when the time is right. when I was making Metal Venture, I asked musicians to offer their tunes *after* the game was beyond 90% complete. I don't want people to make stuff for nothing. Me is me, and if I decide that I made something for nothing, I mostly punish myself.
So, stay tuned, and I might actually make something good :)

Ergh, talk about it. i know exactly how you feel XD
Except... i think i manage to use 7 lines for one line of code, and i have a habit of not commenting at all. (Well, i can remember exacly what that line does.... right?)
-
Once I purchase GM8 I'll get involved.
...Probably.
-
Downloaded GM8 lite.
-
I'll leave this open, then. If anyone wants the source materials I believe I still have them.
-
I think it would be possible to do SOMETHING with the Lite version of GM to add to the programming if this is abandoned, though I have ZERO experience in it. Hmmm... *Thinks* :a1:
-

It wouldn't. Not with the files as they are, since they use GM Pro functions.
-
although i will not provide links to GMPro, i do have the source files for WaDF2 that PYP was working on, and i am happy to send them to people who are interested
-
I said I wouldn't post here again, BUT...
Today I managed to put a tileset together that doesn't completely suck major a**. I also applied some ambient lighting, which makes a huge difference.

I still don't like, however, the fact that the background seems somewhat bloated while the underground looks empty, and it will be kinda hard to see the ball with all this stuff :(
EDIT: I got the same pic with an alternate ground. You decide what's best :)

Hmmm....
WARNING: NO PROMISES. AT ALL. EVER.
I am already working on a game, and i often find that i want to work on something else when i get pissed off. i MIGHT start working on a WaDF sequel.
And here's another thing: I no longer spend much time in GameMaker, but instead use flash. so if i do finish it (well, if i even start it), anyone with flash will be able to play!
But yeah. If you have any valid ideas for story line, or think you can help with the programming/graphics, shout em out. i might be able to act on it.
If another programmer joins the team, i'll set up a GitHub repo.
And if this gets really big, i'll set up a new thread for it, with stuff like team lists. etc.
But programmers beware, i am a kinda messy programmer at times, and i rarely, if at all comment. I guess i need to learn some time, though!
