The Great Work / Re: The Great Work is released!
« on: February 25, 2013, 16:10:07 »
hmm, one thing i thought of while playing knytt underground and the great work, is that i miss how in the old games moving from one area to the next felt like such a shift in tone and visuals. the areas do still have their own unique feel to an extent, but it is always the black ground/walls/ceilings. just an observation, i don't mean to complain. these games are still very atmospheric and engaging.

i had no idea the inventory was infinite, i spent the whole game thinking it was only limited to the slots you see, so i kept storing unneeded items in chests when i (thought i) needed to. now i feel silly.

anyway, this game is great. very slick, very atmospheric, great level design. to me it hearkened back to knytt stories with gaining abilities to let you reach new areas, etc. which is a game design i love, and it felt very well done here. i also liked the alchemy theme, and it made me want to watch the movie, however i went to the website and didn't see any option to purchase it? maybe it is not available to the public yet.

dat beard. i didn't know it was possible for me to love nifflas any more than i already did.

speaking of the PSN version, will it only be available to playstation plus members? i would happily buy it on there so i could play it before the PC release, but i don't have a plus membership, and it would be a bit extreme to get it just for this.

edit: nevermind. saw my question answered in another thread.

I actually did that when I was looking for one of the first stars, expecting it to be to the left. :)

Same! In fact, when I was going through the second time for the star, I looked up there again.

me too. >_<

I really wouldn't add this info if I were you though... Thats the sole purpose of releasing a demo. You could add the text: Please try the demo to see if it runs well on your system before buying it. But thats just stating the obvious.

haha, it may be stating the obvious, but when i read this text on the game's page i thought "hmm, yeah, maybe i should!" i guess i saw it as kind of an honest warning. so yeah.. in future, people have no excuse to assume that it will just run fine and dandy on their machine.

i prefer maximised, anyway.

NightSky / Re: Reviews

not to say that it really/actually disappointed me at all, but where it surely did not was in the ambiance-department. that's what I'll probably keep on expecting from Nifflas: beautiful games. with that touch of evil challenges. :P

this. though, even then, he has his really silly/bonkers games like "R-Type 3.141592653589793238469" and "Det Officiella EDGE Dataspelet" which are a fun change of pace.

I have to admit that the most surprising thing to me about this game, being a fan of Nifflas's previous games, was that it only goes left-to-right and not also up and down.  For the first several screens I was very confused about whether I should be trying to go down holes, whether only some holes would kill me and I should still be looking out for holes that I could actually go down, before realizing all holes would kill me.  This was especially because some of the holes really look like places you should be going down like they would be in previous games.  Nifflas makes a valid point that left-to-right platformers are classic and that he needs to be allowed to try different kinds of games that he's interested in designing.  But boy did it take some getting used to!  It really drove home what a major aspect vertical exploration was in his previous games.

haha! i did exactly the same thing.

pandragon, if you really thought nightsky was going to be like WADF, that is your own fault, and i really don't see how that is a just criticism for the game. judge it on it's own merits, not some preconception that you made up for yourself.

It kinda reminded me of LittleBigPlanet, with all the moving objects and the way the physics worked.

it makes sense, they're both physics-based platformers. i really, really want to create a nightsky tribute in LBP2. i think it will work really well, assuming it's possible to create a ball with similar physics.

NightSky / Re: Alternative mode
« on: January 19, 2011, 05:24:01 »
I found NightSky (in the Alternative mode) too long though. Maybe it's because the setting1, the minimalistic form and the story2 didn't particularly appeal to me. The puzzles and the physics are really good on the other hand.

i can understand the story maybe, but if you're a nifflas fan and you don't like the settings and minimalism.. well, that just doesn't make sense to me. i guess you're only in it for the gameplay?

playing alternative mode before playing normal breaks the satisfying difficulty ramp-up that is otherwise present

if you just played one or the other then whatever but if you play both and you play alternative first it's ruined
On the topic, I'd personally recommend doing Normal mode first too, if for nothing else than to get a good hang of it first.

i agree with these posts. i haven't played all the levels in alternative yet (just the ones in the demo), and while it is definitely a more substantial experience, it does get pretty hard, pretty fast. i think normal mode is necessary to get a handle on the physics and the way the ball controls, if nothing else. plus, if you want to play both, you're hardly going to get much out of normal if that's the one you play second.

just finished the game on normal (going to play through "alternative" next), and i have to say this game is simply amazing. for how long we ended up having to wait for it to be released, i think it easily lived up to my expectations. beautiful, beautiful game with very clever and fun levels. i really think this could be nifflas' break-out game. i hope so anyway. roll on the wii version! (sorry X))

Yo dawg, I heard you like shaders, so I put a shader in your shader so you can lag while you lag.

this game looks like knytt, but even prettier.. and with swimming! awesome. don't know what it has to do with that documentary, but i'm happy. C)
