Development Showcase / A funny game I made for a game jam
« on: August 05, 2019, 00:05:48 »
Some of the old geezers here might have sin a silly game I made for a game jam (Ludum Dare) before, called Dude, You Only Get One. The theme was "You Only Get One".

Well, there was a new game jam in which I wanted to participate, by a Youtuber I enjoy. Annoyingly, the theme turned out to be almost the same: "Only One". I couldn't make myself think of anything other than my Ludum Dare entry, so I just took that, remade it, and added some new interesting mechanics.

This is the final product:

play Single Monolone on itch.io

Definitely not the prettiest, but I think it's pretty entertaining at least. Not expecting to get very good ratings since this jam is very focused on game design, but it was fun to build it.

I always get good feedback for my projects from this forum, so not hesitating to post here.

Uurnog / For those who played it, what did you think?
« on: March 04, 2017, 13:00:41 »
For me, Nifflas's games are like the Nintendo of indies in terms of polish. Everything seems extremely well thought out and nearly flawless. Even if you don't like the type of game he makes, I think everyone can agree that he always delivers a level o polish that few other indie developers achieve.

Must have taken me something like 3 or 4 hours to get to one of the endings (although I was also working towards the other ending at the same time).

The game gives you a lot of freedom to explore and many different ways to achieve your goal. There were a bunch of times where it was clear that I captured certain creatures in ways that weren't intended. The stores let you buy some of the stuff instead of having to explore to get them, and farming cash isn't exactly difficult, so you can get some items that may make you a bit too powerful.

It was definitely a very enjoyable experience, although there were a couple times where I had to stop for a little bit from the frustration of losing progress.

Creativity Support / Easier way to make this kind of animation?
« on: September 03, 2015, 03:19:20 »

This version looks very choppy, but in this example all I need have is a rotating textured sphere, with 2 other spheres for the eyes. This particular animation could probably be just faked in 2D, but I may want to do some more complicated textures on the sphere.
The only tool I know how to use for graphics is Photoshop, and making that kind of animation is not very efficient. Is there a tool that could make this more streamlined? I know this is probably really easy with software for 3D animation like Blender, but those are usually a bit complicated. Should I just keep using Photoshop or is there a tool that could help me?

I recently remembered I have some unfinished levels that I do not intend to finish. I could perhaps use the ideas for their own standalone games, but I won't be using Knytt Stories any time soon. So I decided to release them here, as there is some original content there and it could be of use to someone.

Other Knytts (requires KS+) - Download
  • 3 custom characters;
  • 2 original tilesets;
  • A medium sized map already built, but very unfinished;
  • Cool intro from the original Knytt, but you follow Otto instead.
This was a big idea I had a while ago, too big really.
Here is the original post regarding the idea:
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

RGB (requires KS+) - Download
  • 1 Custom tileset;
  • 1 Custom character (monochrome Juni);
  • A tiny map built for testing the tileset.
The idea here was to start with a monochrome game, and collect 3 different color power-ups: Red, Green, and Blue. But I only made the monochrome tileset (which looks alright). You could collect the colors in any order, and that would dictate where you could go next. As you collected the colors, these would be added to the world's color pallet.

I'm sure there are a few other old levels I dropped, but I'm having trouble finding them right now. As soon as I find them, I will add them to this post.

UPDATE: I made this game initially for Android but recently I've been working on porting it over to Steam. It has a bunch of new features, including custom level designs and an editor that lets you share levels on the Steam workshop. There is still a lot to be done but soon I will need to test the game thoroughly to prepare it for release. If anyone here is interested in helping me test the game, I can send you a key that gives you access to the beta. After the game is released, you get to keep the final version free of charge on your Steam account.

Keep in mind that I can't give too many of these away, so please only request one if you can help by playing a bit before release. Only looking for testers on Windows.

If you don't know what the game is about, check out the web version or the Greenlight page.

Requires egomassive's KS+ mod!

Well. I guess this is another one for the pile of unfinished Knytt Stories levels. But I'll never work on this any further, so this is its final state.
Many, many years ago, I started making a level called "Kera". I then gave up on that level and released it unfinished, to work on another similar but improved and larger level, "Time Fixes Everything". Unfortunately, history repeats itself and no one gives a damn, so just download the unfinished but still quite enjoyable level here:

Download Time Fixes Everything
(Version with some fixes by egomassive)

Original version uploaded by me:

It is very unfinished story-wise, but I believe the included areas are really good and some of you will surely like it! I lost a few hours today to make it less broken and include some developer commentary in the parts that weren't finished, and made it so the game can actually end, even if the ending doesn't make sense.

There will likely be void screens (a huge one that I just remembered but don't want to fix), sound issues, birds that fly backwards (I think this was due to an early problem with KS+ that was fixed later), things that make your computer explode in a bif fiery ball visible from space. But there's a lot of good stuff too so it will probably be worth your time, give it a shot!

Thanks to egomassive for the massively awesome mod and to limanjs16 for the cool music.

Update: The Android beta version for Circular is available now. If you wanna help me test this game, join this Google+ community and then follow the instructions on this page. If you don't like Google+, which is understandable, and want the .apk, send me a PM.

Play the Web version of Circular here here. Use mouse left click, nothing else (optimized for touch screens).

Original thread:
Quote from: Need your funky music for a rhythm game! (Game demo inside)
Here is a very early version of the game:
--original link removed--

Click the screen or use Spacebar, you'll figure out the rest.
Every 30 seconds it will randomly choose a way to make it a bit more challenging (still only 3 of these variations). 30 seconds may be a bit too much.

Anyway, the music being used here is from incompetech.com and it is just perfect for this game. I was wondering if any of the talented musicians over here would be interested in collaborating with me on this game, making similar music or providing some that you may already have done that fit the game. Always with proper credit, of course.

Submitted a simpler, low resolution (32x32 pixels) version of another game I made to lowrezjam:

Caterpillar Racer

Lots of excellent artists around here, especially in the field of pixel art. Anyone consider participating?

Creativity Support / Need help with colors
« on: May 01, 2014, 12:13:27 »

What do you think of the colors? I think the main problem is with the dress, there's not a lot of contrast against the background, and this style won't have outlines. Of course the background won't be all blue, but still. Also, I've been told the sky color might be too jarring and hard to look at.

About Nifflas' Website and Forum / Weird spam posts
« on: April 28, 2014, 13:18:02 »
So long ago that did not meet the standards of this site.
What's up with the weird cryptic posts that keep showing up lately? I think there was another user that made similar posts and it sort of feels like a spam bot but there's no ads or anything, I'm confused.

Even on other forums:

WHAT DOES IT MEAN??!!!

Development Showcase / Worm game concept, suggestions?
« on: August 29, 2013, 12:23:31 »
Game Link

Arrow keys control the head, WASD keys control the butt. You can stick to surfaces (let go of the keys of that part of the body to make it stick). Try to move it like an actual worm would at first.

This is a concept I though of after watching a video of a cute worm moving around. There's likely something similar to this already around but these are just little projects I make to get used to game development. Still just a draft, as you can see.

Any suggestions on how to make this more playable? The physics are weird but that's easy to do manually later to give it a better feel, the most annoying part about this right now is how to make it stick to the walls.

EDIT: Alternate controls: Arrow keys to move head, Space to make the butt come closer to the head. Feels better this way, but makes it impossible to climb walls or walk in the ceiling, levels could be designed with that in mind though.

Development Showcase / Keyboard Killer (Speed Typing Game, Beta)
« on: July 01, 2013, 21:15:38 »
My first proper game, made using Construct 2

Play Keyboard Killer

Uses Facebook for the high scores. Destroy the blocks by typing what's in them, including the first "START" block.

Right now it's fairly simple, type the words to get points, if you manage to type it without making mistakes, you get extra points.

The core mechanics are all pretty much in there, except for one, which is a way to get extra time on the clock, and I'm already working on that.

Wasn't really planning on improving it, until I saw that my friends got pretty hooked after playing it.

What's your best score? Any ideas or suggestions?

The Great Work / I need a hint! (thread may contain spoilers)
« on: February 04, 2013, 06:32:36 »
I've been wandering around the game for a while but I seem to be stuck. I'm pretty sure the missing piece of the puzzle is the second iron ore, which I have no idea where to find. Can anyone provide a hint to help me get there?

I suppose this thread could be used by anyone else in the same situation.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / Some Room [Puzzle, Small, Easy]
« on: July 27, 2012, 12:59:28 »
This level was made for sergiocornaga's "Single Room" competition. I didn't go for the "single screen" approach some people went for, just used the theme being in one room through the entire level.

I was inspired by some point-and-click graphic adventures, specially those flash games where you have to escape from a room to win. As it is in a single room, I tried to make it look good and feel immerse, with a custom ambiance sound and a few animated Custom Objects.

Download from knyttlevels.com

Download from Mediafire

If you really, really need a screenshot before downloading here is one. But this is basically the entire level, so I don't advise you to look at it.
