Title: Isometric Building Creator
Post by: Pick Yer Poison on June 26, 2009, 06:30:20
Hey there! I finally got a bit exasperated at how much time creating isometric pixel art buildings took, so like any good programmer, I designed a program to do it for me! :P I thought I'd share it here. So here it is! (http://www.box.net/shared/qxldcr6ain) (Press F1 for help)
Spoiler: Changelog (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Demonstration (click to show/hide)
Of course, one thing that you need to remember is that something like this will never be able to compare to an isometric pixel art building done by hand by someone good. But it helps to provide a framework!

EDIT: The Isometric Building Creator is now on YoYoGames! (http://www.yoyogames.com/games/show/92056) Stop in, drop me a comment, and most importantly, rate!

hey, that's a cool idea!

Another cool thing would be to have some simple 2d extrusion thing.

Version 1.1 is here! :D I'll put it up on the first post as soon as I can; the MySQL server is messing up or something and not letting me edit my posts. <_<

Get it here! (http://www.box.net/shared/3xq07lffgz)

Here, I'll put a changelog up on the front post. That'll probably help avoid this in the future.

Great editor, reminds me my not-so-far chidlhood when i was bulding houses with LEGO bricks  C)p

Also, a great idea it will be a onionscreen mode, you know, something like this

Layer4  ... ... ...
Layer3  <> <> <>
Layer2  [ ] [ ] [ ]
Layer1  <> <> <>

[ ] Visible blocks
<> Traslucent blocks
... Invisible blocks

That's a great idea! Unfortunately, with the semitransparent blocks I just introduced (v1.1), things would get weird. I might still be able to make it work, though.

New version is out! Just use the link in the first post; I've updated it. We're skipping over v1.2 and heading right into v1.3! See the changelog for new features and the reason for the skip.

How does the onionscreen mode work?

How does the onionscreen mode work?
Let's say you're at height level 5. You'll be able to see height levels 1-4, and if there's anything at height level 6, it will show up as semitransparent. It's currently always on; hopefully the next update will feature an options menu. :)

Yeah, that's GameMaker's fault (the program I used to make this). When you don't use it on Windows, it starts having seizures. :/

Introducing v1.4! (http://www.box.net/shared/qxldcr6ain) Cehck the changelog for, well, changes. :P

Not a whole lot of new stuff in this update, though. I've already implemented everything that doesn't give me a headache just thinking about coding. If anyone has any suggestions, go ahead and toss 'em out there for me to hear! :)

if gamemaker allows it, a VERY cool feature would be for the output to be a 3d file.
If so you could make a building and export it to blender  :whoa:
well just a suggestion.
anyway, keep up the good work!

I think that GameMaker can actually do that...but only for actual 3D models, unfortunately. My program makes 2.5D isometric buildings, but they're not actually 3D models. :( There are freeware programs for building 3D houses, though.

Thanks anyway! :)
