Hello everyone :)
I'm back to the forum. I was known as Saturneo on the forum before, so some people may remember me. I restarted playing Knytt Stories a couple of days ago.
Here's the level's plot and some screenshots :
In a small village named Guatamente, situated on a wild Island in Fergon Sea, approximately ten people are living here. They were very helpful and happy together.
But something was scaring all of them. Not far from here, there are dangerous waterfalls, that no one wanted to cross. But Fergia wanted to. So one evening, she secretly get behind the waterfalls, to see what's behind...
If you have any idea to ameliorate the level, just guess it ;)
PS :: Sorry I'm French so I sometimes make mistakes :/
Very First Beta (A Little Overview)

Looks cute :) . Is going to be a big/small level? Is going to be a challenge or an enviromental? When you will be able to finish it? OK, too many questions :P2
-
Certainly a big level. It is going to be environmental I think. For the release date, I don't know ! But you'll have a first beta version in approximately 4 days ;)
I'd like to make an atmosphere a bit similar to Knytt's one but I dont have much talent for level decoration, I always find something missing in the decoration but I don't know what it is :/

Does it have anything to do with, El Dorado? - The city of gold?
And it looks nice.

Thanks :)
No nothing about El Dorado for now :P

I think it's a hole in the boat.

I think it's a hole in the boat.
Yes there's a hole in the boat, but I can't put the boat in better place, if I put it one tile up it doesn't float on water :S
-
Then why don't you edit tileset, so boat would be 'higher' ?

Not a bad idea, I'll ask the tileset's maker to have his permission to do it.
-
I really think that you don't need permission for that kind of modification.

Well said. You certainly are right. I'll modify the boat later ;)
Here's a new screenie :^^:

I really like the atmosphere and general look of these screens. The transition, in the second screen, from the background to the inside of the cave, looks a bit strange, though. Still - definitely a level to look forward to.

I'm happy that you like the look and the atmosphere of the screens :) .
I know that the transition is a bit strange, but I never had talent with transitions between screens lol
First beta version released :
A little overview of the first part of the level :) There are still incomplete areas so don't matter, just tell me what you think :^^:

It is nice - I want to play it a bit more :)
Now time for some criticism ;)
- The level has some "sudden deaths" after going to a new screen (like in x991y1001).
- The Photo realistic backgrounds are nice, but the mixture of the "knytt"-like backgrounds and photo realistic-backgrounds in the same level feels strange.

-Yes, I think "sudden deaths" should be removed, I'll remove them :)
-You're right, when replaying my level entirely, I also find this strange. So I'll remove the knytt background and add some new pictures (like a real sky for the rocky waterfall)

Downloading...
I don't currently have time to play, though.

Played this the other day. It's a nice level, certainly good for a beta. There were a couple of wallswims, if I remember correctly. Also, like someone said, the transitions were very, uh... well, nonexistent O_o But anyway, I hope you'll keep working on it and we'll see a larger and more polished version :)
-
Very good desinged.
-
Thanks everyone for playing and reviewing :^^:
Yohji : You're right, transitions are quasi non existent for now :/
Is there someone who has tips to make better transitions (every time I try to make some, it looks very weird) ?
I saw where's the wallswims, I removed them so they will not appear in the next beta :)
About the level's progress : 80 % finished, I have the last area to create and also
some cutscenes to make.
New screenie :P

Played this now; parts of it are quite nice, but it does suffer a bit from voids, wallswims and, well, non-existent transitions. The latter are the biggest problem, IMO, because they're not so easily fixed. In some cases you may have to insert an entire, new transition screen, IMO.
Some tips re: transitions:
1.) One method I'm using is to base my designs on two tilesets per screen/area, and do transitions by phasing out just one of those tilesets first (replacing it with a new one). Sometimes I do this little by little, over several screens.
2.) Sometimes a 'geological' approach works - imagine you're dealing with strata/other geological formations of different types of stone or something. Or imagine there's some layering in the (usually invisible, in KS) 3rd dimension - i.e. the 'old' tileset is situated slightly behind, or in front of, the 'new' one.
3.) If you're dealing with a built environment rather than a natural one, an abrupt transition can work, too. But, still, it's better to put that abrupt transition in a screen rather than having it happen between screens. That is nearly always jarring.

Wow thanks you very much for those tips Hmpf, this will be very useful for me :D

Glad to hear. :-) It's difficult to put these things into words - so much of it is basically intuition. I'd never really thought about it before...

Level's ready to play :^^: I think XD
Is there anyone who would like to be betatester ? :)
