So, I've just finished my first playthrough, and got to what I assume is the bad ending.

I might try again for a better ending at some point, but I don't think I've ever beaten a KS level as hard as that one. :p Hopefully the other path(s) aren't quite as harrowing.

Overall, I think the level and the challenges were very well designed, but man does the level earn its 'Lunatic' rating.

Very enjoyable level, and I'm glad to see all the "big ticket" issues I pointed out fixed from the beta version.

From what I understand, the term "Metroidvania" is an ad-hoc name for a subgenre of (typically 2D) adventure platformer where you explore a large area that gradually opens up more and more as you obtain new abilities or otherwise unlock new zones, and also typically involves a lot of backtracking through old areas. As the name implies, this style was pioneered by games like Metroid and Castlevania (specifically Symphony of the Night). Technically, the original Nifflas levels The Machine and A Strange Dream are also Metroidvania levels. By contrast, Knytt Underground isn't so much a Metroidvania because as soon as you hit the main "open world", you already have your full kit and can go basically anywhere.

Anyhow, before I digress further, I'll say again that this is a well-done level, and the challenge for the most part isn't too distracting from traversing the various areas. The music choices are very nice. I particularly like the use of SineRider's tracks from the Music for Sleeping - Volume 1 album. I also appreciate the reference to Last of the salad days (however unintentional it may have been).

I did a bit of running around in the level, got through the very long KG maze, and explored a bit. I have to say, though. I found a lot of technical issues with the level, including several wallswims and a void access. I feel like this level could use a lot of refinement.

I'll probably head back in at a later time, when I am in a more agreeable mood to play something experimental like this. The size of the level is impressive, though, no doubt, and there were some parts that I found intriguing.

4
Neat. I'll give this a play when I can.

Just a note, though. It appears this level requires KS+, but that wasn't mentioned anywhere in your forum post. Might want to add that information. I tried installing it on standard KS first.

5
I'm always up for a good atmospheric level. Let me know if at any point you need a beta tester for it.

6
I will test. It's been a while since I've been involved in such things.

Man, I should have played this a long time ago. I guess I've been a bit aloof from things here for a while.

This was a really fun level, though I have to admit I spent a bit longer than I should have trying to get past the rising spike wall section without the high jump or hologram. :p I ended up needing to look in this thread for a hint on how to reach the area where the high jump was. After that, it was more or less smooth sailing to get to all the secret areas and to what I believe is the end of the level.

I think you made great use of my music here, as well as certain pieces of extraneous graphics. Your tilesets are and always have been on another level, and yet they still feel just at home in KS.

Overall, great work. Have a star from me.  :hiddenstar:

The passage of time matters little to those who adhere to The Principle. Mega-annum after mega-annum will only purify those who have strayed from the path, and the fruits of their past labors will keep the fire burning for as long as they are able.

In time, all scars are brushed away, all bones are recycled, and all mistakes are unmade. If those governed by the Principle may not see distant worlds, then let them send their children along, and return themselves to innocence.

What an artifice intelligence is. However it may try, it cannot defy the Principle. Bear witness as it falls in on itself and returns screaming to its parent.

Well thank you for the tips. I managed to do the jump thanks to holding S. Great level! I had fun trying and trying to advance as it got more and more difficult. At the end I had to give up here:

I evaluated it and tried several times and I am convinced this is as as far as I can go, but I am still happy with what I managed!

I also couldn't manage to do the next jump here to get to the secret area:
I'm glad you had a good time with it. I'm not too surprised that the screen you mentioned is where you got stuck. I think that is commonly cited as the hardest screen (that isn't secret, at any rate). Maybe one day you can come back and give it another go, so don't throw away your save file.

Also, regarding the second screen, I would recommend coming back to that on the normal path so you can use the high jump. That'll make it easier to get in there.

Thanks! that clue was all I needed to find it. It really feels like a whole different level once you get the eye.

I did quite a bit of progress. Usually I stay away of hard or lunatic levels... I am not so good when things get challenging. However I this time I took the challenge! question:
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)
Yeah, that part is possible, just a bit harder without High Jump. You do need to save the double jump to give you that extra bit of oomph, but you also need to make good use of the current to gain the extra height you need. It may help to remember that holding down the S key with the umbrella out causes currents to lift you with more force.

Actually not, only the enemy detector power-up!
I see. Well, you'll need to find the eye powerup early in the level if you want any hope of finding the red or blue keys. Try starting a new game and searching for it before you speak to the mayor of Juni's village.

Well, before we get to talking about the red key, did you ever find the Eye powerup?
