Knytt Stories Level Releases / Re: [Tutorial] Knytt Syndromes
« on: December 09, 2011, 17:15:46 »
Funnily enough I recently played a level where there was no run powerup and it was very good. I'm not sure if anyone knows it, it's called The Lighthouse and the level designer is Dessgeega or something...  :P2

It Waits also has the character walk through most of the level to give the scenery more impact. There are definitely uses for walking, but given the speeds of most enemies and the sizes of most traps, walking challenges tend to end up more difficult (and often less varied) than ones involving running. This could be good or bad depending on how the level is designed, so it's probably more of something to keep in mind than a rule to follow.

This is a great level dood. :) If you wouldn't mind, could I do a Let's Play of it? Also, it took me for-freaking-ever to find all of your secrets. But it was fun in the end.  X)

PS: Where does everyone get those nifty long-bar things in their signatures?

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the level. And I'd be fine with you doing an LP of it. :)

As for the signature bars, try googling them - there are a number of programs online designed for making them. I usually use one of them to make mine. :3

I just finished playing this, and I know it's a month-long bump, but this is still on the first page, and hey, it's never too late for positive feedback. I liked the level a lot; it's definitely one of my favorites. It has that dark edge that I always love in KS levels, like you're seeing things through a lens that's somehow changing the image before it gets to you.

Do you think you could give us an example snippet of some of the responses you have for the fairies? That would make it easier to judge what might be best to suggest.

As for what I can suggest now, I seem to recall you saying that the fairies were like facets of the main character. If that's the case, it might make sense for them to have some similarities. If you can figure out what it is about the pessimist that makes her so appealing, maybe you can mirror it onto the optimist.

And just a note: Our experiences color our perception of things. It may be that the optimist is perfectly alright as is, but you're seeing the pessimist as much better because you're imagining her saying things the way your friend does and are seeing hidden layers of meaning because of that.

Glad to know you guys are paying attention to that sort of thing. :D

Isn't that kinda selfish

It's just an opinion, no need to bash me for it. :/

because its agreed that "more activity = better forum".

Plenty's been said on this already, but I'll just point out that 4chan is an excellent example of how quantity does not imply quality.

As for the n00b thing and posting stupid things; give them a break, everybody was one once (I'm probably in the minority when I say I don't mind n00bs that much, though).

Please don't put words in my mouth. I was saying that young players (generally those in the 6-14 age range) often favor random discussion, and that off-topic boards provide this. The problem occurs when you find certain people who only seem to post in off-topic board threads, effectively turning the forum into an all-purpose chat one. There are enough places for that without us drawing in users who will only check one board that has nothing to do with the rest of the forum. Yes, some of them may check other boards as well, but I don't think they'll be checking them all, and when they're done talking in them they'll simply default back to the off-topic board.

This brings up another point: Adding an off-topic board is by no means guaranteed to attract more users. It may keep them here (and as I said above, the way it does that may invite other problems), but there is nothing to suggest that adding an off-topic board will cause an influx of members. It's not like people join normally forums specifically to chat in the off-topic board, after all; they usually join them to talk about the thing(s) the forum is centered around, and only after that do they head to the off-topic board.

yeah, I admit I was kinda looking at a biased point of view, but to be honest I don't know why anyone would want a quiet, slow forum, and otherwise low-activity forum...
Personally, I prefer the community the way it is now. It's sleepy and laid back, and I come to this forum when I want to relax and not have to deal with internet morons on other, more active forums.

I like how you said you couldn't imagine why anyone would prefer a low-activity forum right after you replied to a post where I explained why I would.

Personally, I prefer the community the way it is now. It's sleepy and laid back, and I come to this forum when I want to relax and not have to deal with internet morons on other, more active forums. Adding an off-topic board would most likely just bring that over here. We have a nice base of (mostly) intelligent users; why do you expect a random chat board to bring more or improve that? Let's face it, many people who play Knytt/Knytt Stories are rather young when they first find it, and upon coming here they would immediately gravitate towards that board and take root, instead of either rising to the standards in the other boards or leaving. Yes, the board might be moderated as heavily as Alcatraz, but no amount of moderation can stop genuinely stupid posts from appearing, especially in a type of board that many consider to be made for anything they want to blurt out that doesn't fit somewhere else.

Of course. Sand turtles are masters of camouflage. It's your fault for spooking it by trying to give it to Miss Paula!

You know, the idea of the surface being abandoned brings an interesting thought to mind...what if your character was an explorer, archeologist, treasure hunter, etc? You could be trying to hunt down a famous ruin of legend built by the humans, or even several of them. If you find yourself wanting to make more levels, you might have them featuring different ruins.

For example, your goal could be to track down a legendary tower from humans times. It's an ancient (ancient being "from when the humans vanished" in this case) tower rumored to reach far into the sky, with a priceless treasure at the top. The catch is that nobody knows where it is, so you've got to explore a number of other "ruins" built by humans in order to uncover clues to its location. These could range from a mining shaft where you uncover shipping orders to an underground shelter containing a library with a map, or combinations of several such things. I'd imagine that since there were so many problems on the surface, people would've retreated underground, which makes it fairly feasable that there would be a number of ruins under there. (Other ideas include an automated factory that may or may not still be fully functional, a sealed research lab showing signs of a hasty evacuation, etc.)

I found one at Flowers.

The real problem with multiple ways of taking on problems is that they usually have to be put there by the game designers. Therefore, if a game designer didn't think of using something to solve a certain problem a certain way, you often won't be able to do it, although of course there are a multitude of exceptions.

Emergent gameplay, a method of giving multiple methods to solve a problem, seems to be becoming more prevalent, though. I've seen a lot of multiplayer games like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead that either have players set up the challenges themselves or randomize them so they're always different.

But it seems that one caveat of using emergent gameplay to create problems with multiple solutions is that sometimes there's no solution. Maybe there isn't a good way to take out that sentry. Maybe you can't dodge that Charger. Maybe your only choice is of how you want to lose. But then again, that's realistic. You're never guaranteed that a problem has a solution in life, and the idea that maybe you're going up against something you really can't beat gives a much greater sense of accomplishment when you do beat it.
