Title: Mines or Interesting Caves
Post by: Talps on September 06, 2013, 19:46:22
Wondering if anyone has any opinions for particularly interesting cave or mine tilesets, as I'm a little tired of the default crowd. I'm specifically looking for rocky caves - not much like the colourful or built-up tilesets of 'IDotS' - and anything that's little-used or has come clever design applications. Gloomy and atmospheric would be nice but that's not exclusively what I'm after.

So if you could tell me of any nice sets you like, I'd be very grateful. Mine tilesets would be very handy, too. Cheers, chums.

I always have found
caves that make my heart pound
Are ones that are pure black
but that curves they do not lack
and a good ambient sound.

You see, gloom is not about the set
Gloom is something that must be met
through the use of objects, sounds and song.
The process is quite long.
And on gloomy atmosphere you bet.

O Tablecat, your verse and rhyme
E'er bring a smile to my face;
I wonder if it takes much time
To fill your posts with humourous grace?

Of Nifflas' 'The Machine' you sing
(Unless I have misjudged my guess) -
That tileset is a wondrous thing
But overused, one must confess.

Of atmosphere, I call you right;
Movement and sound matter entire!
For what is thunder without light?
Or what is burning without fire?

O Tablecat, come all that may,
I'd hap'ly hear you sing, my friend.
May you upon that table stay
And your great poems never end!

The one I speak of is "Machine"
Of that set I am quite keen.
The pipes, the dark, it mixes well
To make an atmospheric spell
That gives your level's style sheen.

The reason it is used so much
Because it is a creepy-crutch!
It's easy: numbered eight and twenty.
So it's likely that its use is plenty.
It gives your level darker touch!

However, it lacks a certain curve.
One that gets me on my nerve.
There aren't enough circles for my preference.
A curvier machine would be the word-reference.
But there are none to observe.

I once tried to write a poem
My mom said it was good
I think she was lying
What time is it anyway

But seriously, does anyone want to suggest a tileset?

I don't know many tilesets because I always try to make my own, so I can really only suggest my rocky tileset from Tewlinetes, which you played:

But it's a rounded tileset, and it may not fit the usual KS style. If you don't remember what it looks like in action, check this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=zydVikolvTg#t=95).

Sergio's Vestiges (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=5192.0) tilesets are great, but you know of these already. Here's some public-use cave stuff I found...
Edit: There were some nice tilesets in the level Darkness by Pick Yer Poison. The links are dead but you can see the tiles to the right in this screen shot (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=1377.msg14766#msg14766) I found.

B-man's brown caves or some of Minmay's ones from Small world might be what are you looking for...

Would Imaddo's tilesets be okay, or are they too overused? I included them just in case you would want to use them, anyway.

Oo! Also, I've played around with Rough Sea Landscape, and it would work well as a cave. I'll include it, too.

Thanks guys; those are pretty awesome; there are some I definitely want to try out there.

It's great to be part of such a supportive community :)

Awesome! Although I'm noticing the rocks are covering the outlines, did you accidentally put them in layer 3 or was it always like that?

They're on layer 2 with KS+'s overlay. It looks great on the grass but I'm debating whether or not to use it on the rocks.

Cool, never tried using them that way. I'll try to clean the tileset up a bit so it works better.

I'm gonna be using the snow version of the set later, and at a glance it looks like there'll be the same problem...

Unused tileset I have so I made a preview with 3 gradients. Not entirely happy with it, something I should change?

Well, at first glance it's hard to tell if the red brick backdrop is supposed to be solid or not. And I'm not really fond of the pattern you're using for the blocks, either (maybe it's too "loud"). Other than that it looks pretty good.

While I echo some of Healy's issues, I really like the flora and bricks you've done, so I think this tileset has a lot of potential.

I think that looks pretty cool; the cross-stitch style tiles do look a little odd at first, but it's a unique and actually pretty cool style that you'll get used to pretty quickly, I think.

I'd use it and love it if I was including volcanic ruins in my level. Wish I was now. :P
A less volcanic version would be awesome.

I've actually already put it into my level.  :^^:

I got so inspired! Lava ruins are beautiful. Good work.  :)
