That's a really neat trick! I tested it and it saves about 25 seconds. With this it should be possible to aim for sub 21 minutes, otherwise I think it would have required near perfect execution of my route.

Awesome! I actually played around with the idea of doing a chapter 3 no disorder run before, but figuring out the route seemed a bit daunting, and I'd never done a nonlinear speedrun before, especially not of this scope. Your run was a really nice starting point, when I saw it I kinda went right on to the task since I was already quite good with the game's mechanics and could see the potential for a lot of cool maneuvrers in this run.

The map you posted alone would have made me consider to also try planning my own route, but because of another thing I pretty much had to do it. I knew a trick with which you could skip having to collect the items required for a bell altogether (before watching the run, can you guess which bell it is?), so the route could definitely be improved by a lot. So I took the item map and layered it above a rendered ingame map that I found by searching in the forum.

Here's what my routing process looked like:

Red crosses are rooms you'd likely never visit in an efficient run, white circles are rooms you'd probably have to visit and green circles are items you'd probably have to collect. After some time the route that looked the most optimal became more and more apparent, so I stopped drawing the white circles and just connected the different parts.

With this new route and due to me already being familiar with a lot of movement tricks in the game, I managed to get a very good time after only about 30 attempts. There are still plenty of small mistakes due to not being all that familiar with the run yet, but this run didn't really have any big mistakes and most of the small ones were easily averted, so I still consider this a pretty damn good run.

Here's the recording of the run:

That's where I'll keep the time at for now but I may continue to improve the run in the future. With a lot of practice, I'd probably be able to cut off another 30-60 seconds of the time. For now, please enjoy :)

Development Showcase / N-Zero (game)

Here's a game that I made for a Mini Ludum Dare (game jam) some time ago.
I thought this would be a good place to post it, since it has some elements similar to Nifflas' games, it's atmospheric with simple KU-like graphics and bouncy mechanics similar to the ball in WaDF/KU.

Game link:

You can see some info on the game and also a gameplay video (spoilers) if you follow the game's link. Be warned though, the game can be quite challenging if you're not used to the mechanics...
Also there's a secret I'm curious if people can find it  :)

There are no instructions in the game aside for which keys to use, it's up to the player to figure everything out himself.

Here are two screenshots of the game:

This is a level that I started working on three months ago, and just finished making a demo which contains the first area of the level. I planned on separating this level into an introduction area and the actual maze part, so that means despite being called "Paradise Maze" this demo doesn't contain any maze elements yet. Aside from some small experiments, this is also the first level I've made :)

It's a story about Juni who moves away from the big cities to a small, reclusive island, not only to escape from her troubles but also because many sages live on there. Like many other knytts who visit this island for just a short while, Juni is hoping that these sages will be able to share some wisdom with her, maybe letting her understand the meaning of life and why she sometimes has such a difficult time dealing with others.

I'm not entirely sure if I will be able to finish this level. My motivation was highest when I started working on this, and I've found recently that I don't care quite as much about telling this story as I used to. Perhaps this will come back though, and I'll continue my work on the level anyways, just not as quickly as before. (Also, I have a portion of the maze finished already that is about as big as this demo.)

If I do finish this though, the final level will probably have the tags [Misc/Maze][Normal][Large]. The maze also won't be a regular maze as you would imagine it, it will contain many other elements as well! Also, it might just be a little confusing.

Here's the

of the level, and I'll leave you with some screenshots ;)

Don't you guys wish there would be more games using bouncy ball mechanics similar to the ones in Within a Deep Forest? Well, I've made one! This is a Ludum Dare 30 entry, with the theme being "Connected Worlds". The description and game download can be found on the game's page, which is here:

There's actually a really simple way for reaching that spot that you must have overlooked, when you go one room to the right and climb up until you are just inside the room with all the lava and the tube, you can gain enough momentum to reach the spot by letting yourself fall down and just keeping the left and jump keys pressed. But putting that solution aside, it can be quite a challenging jump!

It took me a while to figure out another way to do it, because I don't think the spot can be reached from the left; there are too many obstacles to retain enough momentum. I tried reaching it by using one of the green powerups some screens to the right, but the furthest I could get is the leftmost slope one screen to the right of the challenge screen, but even hitting that slope perfectly I don't think you could reach high enough.

I figured out a more direct way eventually  (Video)  , but what surprises me is that you said you found a less direct route, because I can't think of any less direct way to reach the spot than what I did :P Can you explain which route you took?

Ha! I did it! :P

I approached the starting location in a different way than you mentioned, and while that added a little bit to the challenge, it was also a neat little shortcut :)

Wow. That is some fricken achievement right there. Well done, and thanks for sharing. You really make it look so easy. Is it a TAS by any chance, or pure skill?

Nope, not a TAS. I've never done a TAS, but I think if I'd done that I could have easily cut out that one death and some small mistakes and try to make the run as perfect as possible. I don't quite remember, but I think it took me about 20 hours of practice / attempting the run in total before I could pull it off.

Oh, and by the way, if you guys know of any difficult spots in the game that you want me to try to reach, feel free to post them! I may be a little rusty, but I think I'll be able to get into this again. I'll be away from home for the next week though, so I'd have to wait until then ;)

It's been over a year now since I created these two videos, but for some reason I've never posted them here. Oh well, better late than never!

When I first played through the Figure, I got frustrated by it like probably everyone else, but I found that with some practice, it can actually be a really fun challenge! So I decided to speedrun it, and with the finished run I just barely made it below the 5 minute mark. I didn't know of the faster wall climbing trick when I did this, so it could still potentially be done faster, but I'm quite happy with the run as it is :)

The second video is a compilation of some challenges I put together by exploring the map and searching for spots that are particularly hard to, but still possible to reach. It's interesting how the unique game mechanics in Knytt Underground make it possible to use the environment to create your own challenges! These jumps, too, took quite a bit of practice, and over time I found more and more ways to reach spots that looked impossible to reach at first. I'm particularly proud of the last jump in the video, which looks even more insane than it actually is because I got lucky.

Anyway, here are the links to the videos!

Jumping Challenges

Here's one I found, it's maybe a bit close to the spawn point but it definitely has some hard jumps. (A combination of several, actually.) There's also a chance that you fall down and have to start over :P A part of the challenge is figuring out how the jumps work, I didn't think this spot could be reached at first.
