Preliminary story I have in mind for this level, preliminarily titled "Whitebow Island".
"One day, Emma went out fishing.
Suddenly, a storm caught up to her.
Blinded by the intense rain she was lost,
but then saw a single light.
She managed to maneuver to the light, losing her ship in the progress.
This is what happened next:
I started this level about 4 months ago when I opened the level editor on a whim. I found that I still enjoy making levels a lot and decided to keep going. I now have a clear idea of the end goal and I'm about 100 screens in, so I think this will be finished.
The level is made in the normal level editor using only the tilesets, gradients, ambiance and music that is default. I hope it will still be interesting to some of you despite that. In my head it's a sequel to "Emma fell down a well", but I'm not completely decided on that (which is why it's still Juni in the screenshots).
I would estimate the level to be about 30-40% done, which is quite early for a thread like this, but I found it hard to not post some screenshots and share the journey of making this. Besides, if you're still here I think you might be the type of person that can wait a few months  8)

So I'm working on this level where I try to experiment with different tilesets and gradients, try to match them together and such. This area of the level focuses on Egomassive's "Savanna" tileset, and one of the screens ended up like this:

In this one I've included a house design from Brian Lehmann's "Old city"-tileset:

I really liked the look of this and it fits well with the story of the level, but I felt that this wasn't a desolate house somewhere, I needed to create a town in the same style. But that is very difficult to do with above tileset, the details are neat but it isn't very versitile.

So I set out to create a sister tileset that was more versitile to use when creating my town, but I'm struggling with it.. Here it is in its current state:

There are many things I'm not happy with, here's an example screen:

I think this looks incredibly dull, the ground and background textures are simply awful, but I can't figure out something that fits with the theme.

So I'm looking for feedback, any help would be appretiated. Also ideas of what to remove and add would be helpful.  :)

Other Free Games / [Platformer, hard] The art of dying
« on: January 10, 2014, 16:30:20 »
Type: Platformer

Description:
The art of dying is a pretty neat platformer with a nice level editor.
Every level has enemies and boxes that drop coins, when you have enough coins a door opens that takes you to the next level. The gameplay is largely based on movement and the key to success in the game is to learn how to move smoothly.
The game was made to be hard, and as usual that implies the game is crazy hard. It's a short game though with a really nice soundtrack, so I recommend giving it a go.

It's made by Dkh/doorknobhandle/NihilStarcraft. He's a great guy who often helps other indie developers (including myself) with programming. When making this game he went through the intricasies of the engine in a series of youtube videos. You can find all of them in the thread linked below.

Other Free Games / [online social game, drawing] Drawception
« on: April 12, 2013, 12:33:26 »
(I don't actually know if this belongs here, but it is a free game so..)

Drawception is a web-based game where you just draw silly things, but it has a very intresting concept.
  • A game is created with a description.
  • Someone gets that desciption and draws it in 10 minutes or less.
  • Someone else gets that drawing and writes a description for it.
  • Someone else gets that desciption and draws it in 10 minutes or less.
  • And so on until a certain number of panels have been reached.

It's still in beta, but it's soon to be released, and they are working on making an app (which will be amazing ^^). It's quite a lot of fun actually.

I've been on there since early beta. I recently took a long break from it, but now that I returned it seems like they've improved the website considerably. If you want to find me my profile is here:

(I don't have a tablet so my drawings aren't the best, but I don't care :) )

This is my first enviromental level. It was made using only tilesets by Salmoneous/Elder released in *this thread*.

The story is about a knytt called Emma who one day falls down a well and has to find her way back. On the way she discovers a whole world hiding under the surface.

The level has a few jumping sections, I hope I didn't make them too hard for an enviromental level.

Some screenshots are attached.

I've been working on these tilesets on and off for a couple of days now, and for the first time I feel like I don't know what to do with them. I'm not entirely happy with how they look at the moment either. So I'm looking for feedback and tips on how to expand them.

In "Rocky forest" the tall trees are going to be removed, they were a part of an idea that I later removed. So I'm looking for ways to expand that tileset as well. I'm very uncertain about the leaves, I really don't know how to make good trees.

Attached tilesets and testscreens.

Hi!

I'm having a strange problem which I've never had before, I cant get WarpX to work. Basically, I want to drop down to the screen that's down and to the right when I fall down the hole. But this doesn't happen, instead I just fall down to the below screen like the command was never called.

I've checked multiple times if I have saved the world.ini file, and I've even restarted the editor. I can't get it to work.

So: Am I being an idiot here and there is an obious solution?

So a while back Salmoneous released his tilesets in *this thread*. After this I gave myself the challenge to create an enviromental level using only those tilesets. Then I lost all my levels because I'm stupid and didn't back them up (this is the reason I left the forums, every time I even thought about KS I got angry at myself for losing all that work, it was all very stupid). But as I liked the idea behind this level I chose to do it again.

The story is about a knytt called Emma who one day falls down a well and has to find her way back. On the way she discovers a whole world hiding under the surface.

It's quite close to being finished, but will probably take a few more weeks. All the areas except one have been designed and only a few screens are remaining. The stuff I have left are cutscenes and secrets.

Some screenshots from the first areas are attached.

FiNCK / What kind of level would you play?
« on: June 30, 2010, 19:55:09 »
I've been working on a custom level for FiNCK for some time now (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=3585.0), and I realised that I may have made it to hard on myself.

You see, my level is one puzzle after another, every single room is a puzzle and getting to certain rooms is also a puzzle.

Thinking of a puzzle takes time and it's hard. So making a large level that is built this way is really difficult. And today I came to the realisation that people might not want this many puzzles.

So I'm probably going to change the level. But I want to know what you guys would want in a level, so that I can make it as good as possible.

So, what kind of level would you play?

I wanted to create inner corners and got an idea on how to do so.

1) I replaced the foreground graphics with background graphics.

2) I layered an invisible foreground on top of the background.

3) I was going to put in inner corners as decorations, but the screen looked like this:

The ice on top if the screen is supposed to look like the ice on the bottom, but instead it looks like I put a lot of squares in delimit mode: none :P2

Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

FiNCK Level Previews / Platform Experiment (WIP Title)
« on: June 22, 2010, 14:13:40 »
I started to work on this last week and I'm starting to feel confident that this will be released. Despite it not having a title yet I felt like I should start this thread as there are WAY too few FiNCK levels out there. So I want everyone to know that more is coming.

Spoiler: screenshots (click to show/hide)

The level will feature all custom tilesets and backgrounds. These are public and can be used and edited freely. *In this thread* I'll be uploading these for comments, criticism and download.

Progress:
22/6 - 2010
I finished world 1 out of 3-5 today, and I've made a tileset for world 2.
24/6 - 2010
I finished world 2 today, but I have no ideas for World 3. So I think I'l spend some time expanding and decorating the finished worlds.
12/1 - 2011
Starting to work on getting the level out. Finished or not 8D

13
I have a screen that is 2400x2400 and a 640x2400 looping background to match it.

Now what?

I tried putting it in Horizontal/Vertical/Other backgrounds but it still does not show. Checked for spelling errors but none to be found.

Where am I going wrong?

I have the Pre-release version of the editor if that matters.

FiNCK - Challenges / [challenge - Hard] A shortcut.
« on: May 27, 2010, 12:30:18 »
As there is no "challenge" part of this forum I suppose this goes here? 8D

Anyway, the challenge is the image attached.
The first time I played through Nifflas' original level I took a route that I thought would lead me to a coin. But it was in fact a shortcut that I wasn't supposed to take. The challenge is to take that shortcut.
