Title: [Environmental][Small] Darkness

That's right, I made another level already! :D Darkness is a small level which is Environmental, but be warned there are a couple tricky jumps in it. It also has endings. Two, to be precise. The story is never explained; I personally have no idea what the heck's going on. What the endings mean is up to you.

A word of warning: this game features an anti-cheating security system. I'm not even kidding. Just you try. :shifty:

Also, some of the images in the screenshots may seem hard to see, but trust me when I say they are clearer when you play the level, especially if you play it in full screen.

Nice! Reminds me of the dark place in Outer Reaches, which was one of the prettiest parts! Downloading now...

Y'know what, if it's not too difficult I won't *have* to cheat! ;-)

As for making hard levels cheat-proof: have some pity with the crap players, folks! There are some hard levels I want to play because they're pretty; if they're cheat-proof, I'm effectively prevented from playing them, because it's not a matter of laziness with me: I really can't manage some challenges! (This off-topic announcement brought to you by the League of Crap Players. ;-))

got to the white place

and I must say, I think this level is even better, aesthetically, than Outer Reaches! The different 'looks' you've found for the different areas are all equally pretty, and despite the differences it has a very 'unified' feel so far. Very, very nice. Some nice music choices, as well (but I also really liked some of the music in Outer Reaches. I may have to check out those artists, as I still have no idea where to find music for my own level...)

Very nice looking. I would get both endings, but I can't find the yellow key. I've even been searching through the editor for it. >_<

EDIT 2: That "CHEATER!" Thing is getting really old now, you could easily give someone a heart attack with that.

nicely creepy. As for the other, I assume I need to jump out and up from under that triple overhang in the brown-red caves... which, I'm afraid, even with the highjump and air jump ability, is a jump that defeats me. Or rather, it's a jump that I know I can do if given enough time, and, just to see if I could do it, I've tried and managed similar things a few times in other levels. However, my skill at doing this type of jump is too poor to allow me to do it without days of failed attempts, and I simply don't feel like spending so much of my time doing something as annoying as endlessly jumping up and falling down the same cliff overhang, again and again. I would love to see the rest of the level, but not at the price of that much time and annoyance. :-(

I recommend searching the Whitelands more thouroughly. ;)

I'm glad you "like" the anti-cheating system. It was specifically designed to do that :shifty:. Surprise people, that is, not give them heart attacks. O_o

What do you do with the keys?

The cheating protection is in an area which you need the keys to go to (I won't tell you where to find it). It keeps you from getting to the end if you haven't completed the game and/or don't have all the keys, and thus would have had to cheat to get in.

Heeeeeeeeeeh! I actually beat this thing! Entirely without cheating! And with only about twenty minutes or so of frustrating repeated failure! (ETA: Apparently I've found an innovative new way to do that jump.  :whoa:)

Okay. So, first things first: lovely level, definitely a keeper, and I'll certainly replay it, now that I know how to do that jump.

But: not an easy level, seriously. Normal, I think, but not easy.

I got the second ending! That hint was a huuuuge help  :^^: I felt really left out when everyone was talking about the cheat protection but I checked it out after i had finished... lol  :crazy:

I'm intentionally cheating just to test the anti-cheat measure (editing the save file so I manually get all four keys)... with the sound OFF, thank you. I'll let you know if I find anything.

I frankly don't know what happened. There's no cheat protection anywhere near the second machine. If you could send me a PM explaining the details, I'll try and figure out what's happening, maybe give you a hint or two.

There's a wall of shifts blocking my way, I can't move forward  :( It's to the very right in the exact screen of the 2nd machine

I'm glad you enjoyed my level! I know I say that to everyone, but it really does make me glad when people have fun playing my levels. C)

Anyway, here are the basic concepts of the anti-cheating security system:

The anti-cheating system is only in the secret area. There are 8 conditions that will set the cheating protection off:

• You're missing one or more of the four keys (that's half of the conditions)
• You haven't activated all of the machines (that's the other half)

Just got both endings.  So, yeah, to continue a little what was being said in http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=3874.msg45691#msg45691, this has the right pieces in it to make it feel like there is a story even though there is not.  Lots of pieces feel like they fit together, though, even if there is no reason given for them to do so.  I guess I should put this in spoilers because I allude to ending areas...

You have the machines, the trick end that almost feels like a set up by an adversary, those cool floating gear works, the dark, the white, the ancient section crowned by an endless wall, and waking up to find yourself in a green living area instead of a red wasteland.  Those are good pieces and they can be read in various ways.  I like it.  :)  The only thing I see that could confuse a deeper ending would be that the white area isn't really all that different than any others.  Normally, I would assume that a white area would be an opposite of the Darkness.  Instead, it is the ancient area which holds the most significance, acting as the endless path to yet another Darkness, but one lacking the foreboding music (though visually it is still foreboding) and which leads, apparently, back to normal life.  That creates a strange image if one is trying to create a deeper meaning.
