"Abandoned" run (gets to the end but deviates from all artifacts) at the time, comes to about 2 hours and finishes with only 3 artifacts. https://youtu.be/P1OQlFTGL4I
Impressive playthrough. Those first two screens were basically deathless! It was a pretty close race until that big ol six-screen puzzle threw everyone for a loop.

This sounds awesome! I haven't been this excited for something KS-related in a long time, so way to go pfrangip and VG! Consider me eager to take a crack at the first two categories and the bonus (so there's a lunatic mode and a true lunatic mode, huh? Intriguing... :shifty:). Each artifact awarding 10s adds an interesting twist to routing. Hopefully the prize money doesn't encourage people to hide their strats/runs until the very end. Gibber's a pretty strong creator, and Dithered Temple was quite a solid map, so I don't expect there to be any OOB/wallswims, but I'll sure as heck be looking for them. I wonder if perhaps you have intentionally left any in, just to stir the pot... (though personally I hope not. Much more fun to break what wasn't meant to be broken :^^:)

Good luck to all contenders!

Knytt Stories / The Randomizer Room
« on: July 13, 2020, 12:05:39 »
Randowhat?
For those of you not familiar with the knytt stories randomizer, it's basically a tool that allows to to take any Knytt Stories level and mix it up a little. You can randomly replace all the enemies with different enemies, randomly add enemies, rearrange decoration, etc. It provides a way to spice up your favorite (or least favorite) levels.

So what's this room, then?
The Randomizer Room is a Knytt Stories unlike any other, in that it is specifically designed for randomizing. It contains 50 rooms which the randomizer populates with enemies and the golden creatures from KS+. Juni must then cycles through the rooms, carefully collecting any golden creatures she can find amidst the chaos. The idea first came about when DonDoli randomized golden creatures into A Strange Dream, and realized that one of the secret rooms had a similar mechanic. StraightFlame set out to make the idea a reality, which I then added onto, and you can see some of the results below:
Spoiler: screenshots (click to show/hide)

Looks awesome! Where can I get this?
You can get the randomizer here, and the most up to date version of the randomizer room should be attached to this post. The most reliable settings for the randomizer are currently True Random and
Code: [Select]
EFU->YE
What can I do to help?
We're trying to pack the randomizer room full of 256 different screens. If you think you can design a fun challenge room, go for it! If you just want to playtest the existing room and give feedback on what feels jank/unfair, that's great as well. If you're not a mapper or a player, why not shout out some suggestions for the powerups room? Currently we've only got locks for golden creatures, so if coins and artifacts get in there, how would that change it? And of course if you have any other suggestions/ideas, don't be afraid to contribute. With enough people we can build something awesome.

Glad to have you back VG! Very cool level. The graphics look completely like they belong in KS, while still maintaining that photorealistic quality. What's more, you've nicely indicated what's solid and what isn't (at least for me), without detracting from the quality. The only problem I had was that the umbrella disappeared into the background.

Nifflas' Sources / Purple Pineapple's dumb KS mods
« on: December 26, 2018, 00:19:32 »
Happy holidays everyone! Purple Pineapple here with another thing that no one asked for, no one wanted, and no one needs. I've been collecting a bunch of ideas for quirky/silly/dumb Knytt Stories mods, and now I've packaged them all up into a mod pack. The current list of mods is:

  • Knytt Stories but the powerups are times 3
  • Knytt Stories but Juni is invisible
  • Knytt Stories but if you stop moving you die
  • Knytt Stories but savepoints are single use
  • Knytt Stories but all the powerups are beans
  • Knytt Stories but with better controls
  • Knytt Stories but with 500ms of input delay
  • Knytt Stories but enemies never despawn

Download: https://www.dropbox.com/s/36sg48au740rom0/dumb%20ks%20mods.zip
Download (source files): https://www.dropbox.com/s/is4fcnurn7itg0x/dumb%20ks%20mods%20src.zip

To install simply copy the executable file into your Knytt Stories folder and run it. The mods won't alter your worlds/saves/etc any more than normal KS would. Some of them can make the game pretty difficult, but I was able to beat The Machine 100% with all of them. Some levels may actually become impossible with some of the mods, though, so play with them as you will. Have fun :)

Knytt Stories / Knytt Stories TASer's Handbook
« on: November 29, 2018, 08:51:21 »
As some of you may know, I spent several months working on and off on a TAS early this year. During the course of this process I learned quite a lot about the Knytt Stories movement engine. A lot of it isn't obvious from (or isn't even in) the Nifflas's source code, so it took quite a lot of experimentation. I figured that all my discoveries were worth publishing for anyone else who might want to know the inner peculiarities of the game, like why Juni's jumps have small inconsistencies to them. I have been working on compiling all of that knowledge into a document, so that anyone who wishes may know exactly why KS behaves the way it does. I now present...

Although it is specifically written for TASers, this guide contains a lot of information about glitches and quirks of the game engine that could be of interest to everyone. I realize that it is a fairly dense read, but the goal of this paper is to inform. If there's a section that you read but didn't fully understand, or something you found interesting and want to know more about, then let me know. If anyone's actually interested enough for it, then I plan on making a video to more easily explain some of the deep intricacies of KS. Obviously I can't do a video on the whole thing -- it would be several hours long. But if people tell me what they'd like to see, I'll be more than happy to oblige.

Nifflas' Sources / Re: egomassive's Knytt Stories Plus mod
« on: June 07, 2018, 23:52:29 »
Thanks VG! That's good to know. Can't say I've ever come across that in vanilla KS. Makes me wonder if it's exploitable in some way...

It seems like the ShiftCharacter fails to work if the corresponding shift is triggered at the same time as another shift, regardless of the other shift's properties. Demonstration level is attached.

I love the way this competition brought out some of the best levels KS has seen. Serious congrats to the winners; all of them were very fun to play.

@Fubaka Any chance we could see the scoring breakdown?

#ModArchive Story / Re: Deathless Speedrun in under 6 minutes
« on: March 23, 2018, 22:47:41 »
Hah, yeah. OS:XH is easily the hardest game, hands down. Though, if you stand a fighting chance against OS:XH I think #MAS shouldn't be too bad. You just have to get used to the slow acceleration and the awkward boss patterns (looking at you DFast and Doragon >().

#ModArchive Story / Deathless Speedrun in under 6 minutes
« on: March 23, 2018, 10:56:51 »
So for the last several months I've been doing speedrun attempts of this game, and I finally got a run I'm happy with. There are no deaths, but I do sometimes hit Home at the beginning of a level to reset my momentuum. I also abuse a number of areas where you can get out of bounds.

Knytt Stories / Re: Knytt Stories is being speedran at ESA
« on: February 26, 2018, 06:52:42 »
Looks like including Don't Eat the Mushroom wasn't such a good idea after all. It resulted in part of the speedrun getting muted.
The highlight is still muted, but the VOD was fixed. Check https://www.twitch.tv/videos/231498898 at around 8 hours in.

I think it was fun to watch. Too bad he had lots of trouble with the corner jump and eventually just cheated to get past, even though the route around would not have been too much longer.

Shows the runner doesn't know the map too well and only knows the route they need to take.
Corner jumps save roughly a minute and a half over the intended route. It may not be much time to waste, but it would most likely have put him over estimate. Given that this was a marathon setting and they had a schedule to keep, I think he made the right decision.

Also he was one of the early proponents of the Machine "glitchless" category, so he is aware of the alternate route.

Technically, that's not all of his levels. There's also the tutorial and the Advanced Features Demonstration. Though those probably wouldn't be very interesting to speedrun.
Nice catch. I changed the first post.

People do speedrun the tutorial, but I have yet to see a speedrun of Advanced Features Demonstration :P
