Development Showcase / SHORT FILM - an action thriller
« on: June 09, 2010, 07:46:51 »
Hi there, Nifflas forum folk!

I've been inactive for a while and all my Knytt and game-related projects have unfortunately been on hold. The reason is because I've been working on a short film for the past 6 months (filming from January to March, post-production and editing March to June), co-directing with a friend, and it has now been released!

Please, take a look. Heck, watch it twice! And please, SPREAD the word to your chums. I've entered it into a festival which takes into account the number of views, 'likes', etc. So the more people who see it, the better! My goal is to hit the 1000 views mark in a week. (Please excuse the blatant self-promotion there.)

You can watch it on my website, here (http://bit.ly/bN21jK) as well as read some extra info about it. Or, you can watch it on Vimeo (http://bit.ly/blx2bl). The film is also available on my friend (and co-director / actor)'s Vimeo page.

Hope you enjoy it! If you have a Vimeo account, add me as a contact (the I'm also on YouTube so if you have a YouTube account, add me as a friend there too - http://www.youtube.com/user/uth3rdoul - but the views for the festival are Vimeo-based).

Thanks in advance for your support! Hope you enjoy it. There will be more to come.

Other Free Games / [Oddball/Flash] Feed The Head
« on: July 05, 2009, 11:56:31 »
This is a rather obscure Flash browser-based 'game' (or interactive timewaster, if you prefer).

Effectively, you're given a head with some hotspots and weird things to do. There's always something that'll progress you to the next thing to do, and when you're done, it's quite obvious and loops back to the beginning. No goal other than to play around.

Here are some screenies:

I discovered Construct through whoever first mentioned it on this forum (I have a feeling it was Goog) and seeing as it's FREE, I decided to work on a project I've been planning to make for some time.

The basic premise is that you are RLM (a Renegade Lightbulb who decides to become a Mechanic, hence the title). You unscrew yourself from your bulb socket and roam the machineworld wasteland looking for a meaning to your fragile, light-emitting life.

It will be a 2D platformer, focused largely on exploration (plenty of easter eggs to find) with a few basic puzzles thrown in. I don't want to make it too difficult, but then again, if it's too easy it will have to be massive to have some form of longevity. So, I suppose I'm seeking some sort of middle-ground.

Powerups will include the following:

  • Wires (which wrap around the bulb-torso and act as arms) - allowing you to pick up / move objects
  • The trusty spanner (or 'wrench') - allowing you to manipulate / fix machinery
  • Battery pack - allowing you to either electrocute things (enemies), or recharge powered-down machinery

Perhaps there will be others. This is still in a very basic stage, as I?m still working on the platform engine and have only very basic sprites and animations completed.

16.06.09 UPDATE: Updated version of the main character's walk cycle. Miss Paula pointed out my laziness, so I've adjusted the background to be a more respectable speed. Now with Frame-counter!

01.31.10 UPDATE: Renegade Lightbulb Mechanic is on temporary-permanent hold. Yes, that is possible. Aside from pausing to learn Construct more, my computer overheated and fried itself (09.09) so most work was lost. The concept is still alive and will (perhaps sooner rather than later) be resurrected. Perhaps to take on a fresher form. Expect topic to bumped when this happens.

This should give you a general feel for the mood and colour scheme. Needless to say it will feature delicious pixel art!

 Hi all.

I've managed to avoid most warp and flag use in my level-making, but it's got to the stage where I think I need to use them. This is what I want to do:

Imagine I'm at 'main area 1' (1000x1000).
Enter a building (1000x1001). (easy shift work)
Shift to different interior (1000x1002) and get Item Run with the flag. (no problem)
Leave the house to get to 'main area 1' (1000x1000). (easy peasy)
Walk off-screen to go to 'main area 2' (999x1000).
Return to 'main area 1' (1000x1000).
Enter the building to reach a NEW building interior with no Flag Item shift (say, 1000x1003). (HOW?!)

Does that make sense? Basically I want to make it so I can only enter a screen amongst a line of screens on the same y-axis if I haven't got Item Run. Otherwise, I'd like to skip that screen and get to a different screen where the building shift destination will take Juni to a building interior screen without the item shift.

Now, I could do this by copying my y-axis screens, but that'd be a lot of work, as they all connect quite intricately with each other (interconnecting shifts, etc) and I don't really want to do that. Surely there's an easier way with flags / warps? I watched Bass' videos on flags and warps and they were the most basic things I can already do with them. I know they have more functionality, but I can't seem to harness it.

Anyone care to make any suggestions?

These are three browser-based Flash games I just discovered. They are all pretty much experimental gameplay showcases rather than full-length games, but they are of an excellent quality and incredibly 'cute'. Plus, they're nice n' pixelly, which is always a nice bonus!

I Wish I Were The Moon

Info:
This is the first of the three. There are two people, one on a boat, one on the moon. There are a bunch of possible endings for the ensuing love triangle. It's a pretty simple concept - click to take a photo of something, click again to move it. It remembers what endings you've completed and tells you how many are left.

The Trials

Info:
This is the second game, and quite similar in concept to the first. You take photos of things to achieve a simple goal (there are only three different scenes), but instead of moving the objects in question, you duplicate them. Personally, I feel that this is the weakest of the three concepts, but still worth a try.

Storyteller

Info:
This is the third game. There are three people, and the game shows you scenes from three points in their Fairy Tale lives: Once Upon A Time, When They Grew Up, and The End. You can move them around in each scene to alter their interactions, background, allegiances, etc, and it shows you the outcomes. While there are a few endings that are designed to happen, it's possible to play around and make unintended things happen, some of which can be pretty funny!

EDIT: There's actually a download available which includes the above and the latest game which is actually pretty darned good too, but I can't be bothered to mentioned much about it. The link is HERE (including donation option).

Other Free Games / [Misc/Puzzle/Simulation] flOw
« on: April 20, 2009, 14:43:09 »
Type:
Flash, browser-based (also downloadable) Evolution Simulation

Description:
In flOw, You control an organism (not single-celled, but pretty low on the evolution chain) and you simnply move it around so that it's 'mouth' or target area swallows smaller organisms, or small parts of larger organisms (which pose the biggest threat to you).

You can go 'up' or 'down' evolution levels by swallowing special blue or red target organisms. You can always see what's ahead of you, as each level shows the next evolution level below it in fancy blurred-semi-transparent-o-vision. The further you progress, the more your organism evolves, and you can even partially control which body parts get evolved.

Once you've completed the evolution of the first type of organism, you return to the top evolution level with a different organism and must do the same thing again. This was actually made downloadable for the Playstation 3, but the online / downloadable version is much the same, if a bit slimmed down.

A Note on the Different Versions:
The PS3 version looks much prettier! Screenshots below are from the PC version, and one from the PS3 version to show the difference. Don't let that sway you, give it a try. It's addictive and soon gets pretty tricky. Have a look at the Official site for the PS3 (below) to see what the 'real' version is all about.

Knytt Stories Level Previews / [Puzzle/Misc] Fissure
« on: March 01, 2009, 21:42:30 »
Full title: Fissure
Updated: 24/5/09

Welcome to the preview page of 'Fissure', a subquest-orientated hub-based level, complete with custom everything. By that, I mean that aside from standard KS objects, these levels will have brand new tilesets, gradients, ambience and music along with new custom objects.

This will be released in parts, each part released as an add-on which will overwrite the previous one level, adding new areas... If that makes sense. The structure will be as follows:
  • Ch1 - Twisted Roots (a village, a pumping station, an overgrown garden)
  • Ch2 - Crystal Playground (an underground cave system, a crystal temple)
  • Ch3 - Damaged Ground (ancient ruins, a robot factory, a volcano)

All areas will be accessible from the hub, the starting village (in some cases, chambers beneath the village).

The story takes Juni across a variety of landscapes (each with their own challenges and style of gameplay) in pursuit of a being that has infected her dreams with rage. Juni flees her village after receiving a terrifying vision, seeking a way to protect her village from certain destruction, or to end to her torment...

As Juni travels through each area, the style of gameplay will change, from simple platforming / exploration in one area, to shift-based surreal puzzles in another, to enemy evasion and even perhaps a boss fight.

Category: Puzzle / Misc
Difficulty: Hard
Size: Medium
Completed Custom Tilesets: 5.5
Completed Custom Gradients: 10
Completed Custom Objects: 5.5
Custom Music: All music confirmed, with permission from the artist!
First Chapter Completion: 80%

For a taster of general story-arc, please visit here for a download of the abandoned project this is essentially a remake of.

Below are a couple of sample screenshots - see page 2 for more screenies (excuse the slight manipulation in #1, it's currently part of a desktop background ;)).
