Juni's underground lab needed some remodeling, but something went terribly wrong and now she's trapped inside. Find another way out!

This is a really small custom Knytt Underground level, not very nice to look at, and it's also a sort of remake of my original Knytt Stories level. I've made the level as I was learning how things like Scripts, dialogue, Robots, and Oscillators worked.

EDIT: I've developed and tested this level on Linux, so I had to make some fixes afterwards because it wouldn't work on Windows. Mac OS X users are welcome to try it out as well. There's just one warp that I couldn't get to work on Windows (first room on the left), but the rest is working perfectly.

Here's the 4th download link

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bw7dMCzFH_OuZlU0c3RDMlRGMTg

The .zip file contains a README with instructions on how to 'install' it; I'm copying that in the post as well.

Please let me know if it works for you.

---

How to try the level with Knytt Underground >= 1.1.0 (or >= Beta 2 for Linux)

- make a copy the folder of a Knytt Underground portable demo installation
- replace the World folder with the one in the archive (backup the original!)
- copy the Ambiance and Sounds folders and Sprites.dat file from the original World folder to the new one
- run the game

Other Free Games / [Exploration/Puzzle?] Zzzz-Zzzz-Zzzz
« on: August 21, 2013, 15:17:26 »
Download page at Game Jolt (warning: comments in the page may contain spoilers)

Not really a game according to its creator Heiser Saint, Zzzz-Zzzz-Zzzz has you control a person apparently trapped in his dreams; the objective is to find a way to wake up, by moving from dream to dream. You can make the protagonist walk around, jump, in some instances run and fly, and press the Z key to perform a variety of context-sensitive actions, not always obvious. Dreams are generally small self-contained areas, and there are often different ways to 'exit' them (and end up in another dream). Discovering new dreams and new exits is the key to 'win' this game.

The different mechanics of each dream and the great variety of areas to explore make this a fun game to play, although some dreams can be a bit boring to go through (you'll be likely to explore each dream more than once). Presentation makes it look just like one of the hundreds of pixelated 'art games' we see around these days, but in this case it is entirely justified: the themes explored are interesting, the text is profound enough without sounding pretentious, the graphics are consistent, there are no severe technical problems (a feat considering the game was made with Game Maker).

Getting to the end of the game can take a long time: unlocking new dreams and finding things that make you progress at times require some lateral thinking, and finding your way without help isn't easy. There's also a couple of instances where some skill is required (platforming and other things). The most obscure part, though, is something at the very end (but there's a chance you won't have any problem with that). Finally, the game has several Rewards/Achievements if you're into such things.

Knytt Underground / KU Java Editor alpha - nothing too exciting
« on: March 21, 2013, 21:49:41 »
I've been working on adapting the KS Java editor to work with Knytt Underground, and this is what's come of it now. It's somewhat usable, but not really tested, and has important stuff missing. The reason I'm releasing it now is that lately I haven't had much time and will to work on it; I'll resume development eventually, but since I don't know when, at least there's something to try out if you want.

I'll add some instructions on how to use the editor later. All you can do right now is edit the stuff inside the World.bin file, i.e. room/tile/object/sprite/robot placement and settings (I'll write the details later). The big stuff that's missing is showing object animation (since the editor is in Java, I couldn't animate the rooms like in Nifflas's editor; I'll show them in the Object Settings dialog only, in later versions) and sprite recolouring (I haven't figured out how it works yet).

http://www.filedropper.com/kueditor-alpha
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=00085940988682259107

Please note that this is an alpha version, and it might not work correctly: do not use this editor with the full game, use a portable demo installation instead (or, even better, a copy of that) unless you want to risk losing game data.

If you're interested, the editor source is included inside the .jar.

Attached is also a minimal test level with a single room (instructions on how to use it are inside the archive)

---

The editor always starts at x0y0 coordinates; you can navigate the rooms by clicking on them on the mini-map or with the arrow keys (hold Shift to move 10 rooms). You can 'create' a new room by editing an empty block.

The default edit mode is Tile Mode: click to place the currenly selected tile; click on the Delete Tile button (red crossed square) to toggle Delete mode (or use the Tab key). Click on a tile on the tileset panel to select it, or use the WASD keys; click on 1, 2 and 3 to switch between the three room tilesets (or use the Q and E keys). Use the combo box below each tileset to change the current tileset. Below are more room settings: Tileset Background (don't know what it does), gradients to colour the background, delimiters (affects the map), room type (save, item, quest, etc...; don't know which is which yet), red/green/blue (determines if the room is available in the 3 chapters of the game).

Click on the tabs in the upper right corner to switch edit modes (using 1, 2 and 3 was supposed to work as well; will fix this later).

Object mode has a list of the objects in the current room with their ID; you can add an object into the room by selecting the object type from the combo boxes below (category and object name) and clicking. Select an object from the list and an outline will appear in the room: drag the outline to move the object; click on Remove or press Delete to remove the object (confirmation pop-up). The Edit button opens a dialog where you can change some settings (will add the animated object in there later). Duplicate simply copies the object, with all its settings, in the same position.

Sprite mode is more or less the same, only for Sprites and Robots: they have different settings than Objects (maybe I'll have the correct image for Robots later instead of an icon).

Ctrl+C/V to copy/paste an entire room; Ctrl+Delete to delete the current room (no confirmation). Ctrl+S saves the level and backs up the previous version (up to 3 backups, named WorldX.bkup).

Sound Settings and Edit Script are self-explanatory. Currently there's only a basic text editor for scripts, and there's no music player to test the sounds.

EDIT: changed file hosting service and made small fixes to make the editor load the Infinity Hype update

EDIT: corrected JLocator repaint/update

EDIT: avoid completely empty sections in World.bin (the Windows version of the game doesn't like them  :^^:)

Edit by LPChip: Attached the zipfile, its only 500kb, and stickied the post.

Other Free Games / [Platformer] The Island of a God
« on: February 05, 2011, 20:02:24 »
The Island of a God is a classic platformer where you have to collect certain items within the various areas; the general structure is similar to that of Super Mario 64, only on a much smaller scale.

The game is fun, the controls are very good, the levels are well designed. It's pretty large for a freeware game, although it's certainly not as large as, say, An Untitled Story. It's also fairly forgiving: you have a health bar, and while some traps and enemies can almost deplete it with a single touch, your health slowly regenerates.

The graphics are nothing special, but they don't get in the way. The music... I'm sorry, I played this through Wine and the sound didn't work (but it did run smoothly and without issues). Definitely worth a look.

Warning: there is a bit of (unnecessary) swearing.

Other Free Games / [Exploration] The Deeplight Expedition
« on: September 03, 2010, 21:35:05 »
Flash game in which you explore some ruins. No weapons or any ways to attack, no tools, no power-ups; only your running and jumping skills, including wall jumping and ledge grabbing.

This game bears more than a simple resemblance to Knytt and Knytt Stories, especially in the presentation: some of the tiles and effects look almost taken straight out of KS. The difficulty is fairly high on some passages, but I blame the weird wall jumping controls which require a while to get used to.

The music is nothing to write home about, but there's enough variety. Among the rest, there's a minimap always available and a bunch of tablets to collect.

You can play the game on Gamesfree or Newgrounds.

Other Free Games / [Puzzle] Grow Valley
« on: August 24, 2010, 11:12:13 »
Anyone who's familiar with the Grow series doesn't need any explanation about this game; I'll just say the quality of this episode is excellent - possibly the best one yet - and there's a secret ending. Oh, animations in this one can be very long, but you can skip them if you want.

'Grow' games are very simple: you have a set of buttons you can press in any order you want, and depending on the order you choose, different things will happen. Every game has a different setting (a valley in this case), but they all share the same graphical style, funny characters and animations. The objective of the game is to make the place 'grow' as much as possible, but you can have fun trying random growth patterns to see what happens; figuring out the correct order is only part of the fun.

You can play this game here (requires Flash).

In the level editor, how do you select an object when it's positioned under another object? Case in point: the starting point for almost every level has the player object overlapping with a door object; how do you select the door? Do you have to move the player object away first, or is there a simpler way?

Thanks in advance.

Other Free Games / [Action/Adventure] God of Thunder
« on: May 13, 2010, 11:22:14 »
God of Thunder is an old DOS game, made by Ron Davis (Software Creations) and released in USA in 1993. It's an action-adventure game with top-down view, similar in ways to The Legend of Zelda. It was originally a shareware game in three episodes, the first being available for free, but now it's entirely freeware, and you can get it at the Adept Software website.

You're Thor, the namesake of the game, and you're commanded by your father Odin to complete several missions. The game has you explore fields infested with enemies, some of which recognisable as part of the Norse mythology; you'll have to find your way through plains, towns, caves, and puzzles of all sorts.

The game isn't too hard, since you restart at the entrance of an area if you die (and you will die, a lot), but there are many instant-death traps (some of which reminiscent of Lolo, for those who know). However, certain block-pushing puzzles can leave you stumped, in which case I'd suggest you take a look at GameFAQs.

Knytt / A small Knytt-related video
« on: March 30, 2010, 21:50:32 »
I thought I'd share this... Someone made a microgame about Knytt in WarioWare DIY; for those who don't know, WarioWare Do It Yourself is a DS game where you can create really short, 5-second minigames with simple rules, akin to the microgames in the other WarioWare games.

Find Love, Tikkiit / Strategies
« on: February 09, 2010, 13:56:08 »
I think that for the most part this game encourages defensive play: there's this really powerful (if not utterly broken) move, whose name I can't remember now, that entirely replenishes all your stats (I believe it's Right, Right, Left, Right, but I could be wrong). Only for the last fight (and maybe second to last) you're better off switching to offensive, since your Hearts can go down really fast unless you react.

Also, is there any point to barriers (shields, or whatever)? Maybe I'm missing something, but putting one up hardly has any effect.

Finally, does making combos result in more damage/effects, or is it merely for cosmetic purposes?

...

Other Free Games / [Platformer] Level Up!
« on: December 03, 2009, 10:04:49 »
It's a nice little 2D platforming Flash game with lo-fi graphics, which, in substance, has you controlling a girl who has to collect red gems scattered around the world.

The distinguishing feature of the game, as suggested by the title, is leveling up your abilities by simply performing actions in-game: running a lot will make you run faster, jumping often will make you jump higher and reach new places, and so on. There are lots of stats to level up, and also special abilities ad power-ups to acquire by using the gems you've collected. You don't have any weapons, and can only avoid the enemies around you.

There's a twist to the game mechanics however: when the day ends, the girl goes to sleep, and has to "fight" a powerful enemy, and if she loses, all her levels will drop back to 1. Checkpoints and % of explored map will however be recorded, together with the log of all places she's been to and people she's met. Getting 100% completion will net you a demo of the sequel, which is a different kind of game.

The story is cheesy in my opinion, but that doesn't detract from the gameplay.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / [Misc][Easy] Temp IV
« on: December 01, 2009, 10:27:51 »
The conclusive chapter of the Temp series: short, simple, and non-explanatory.

There really isn't any novelty this time, but I wanted to end the series, so there.
