Title: [Misc] The Mainspring (working title)
Post by: Joozey on March 01, 2009, 15:33:16
It's my very first knytt stories level, but I feel it's worthy enough showcasing here.
This game features an extensive story with interesting twists (at least... I tried :D). Although many dangers lay on your path, the game is mainly focussed on the story, breathtaking environments and long journeys. Journeys over the surface, through the rocks, and further beyond...

The game still needs alot of work. How long it will be, I do not know. As long as I have inspiration, I keep extending it.

Most tilesets are token from the library, some are mixed, some made by myself.

Inspired by two books:
The Myst Reader (http://www.amazon.com/Myst-Reader-Rand-Miller/dp/1401307817)
Mainspring (http://www.amazon.com/Mainspring-Jay-Lake/dp/0765356368)

Enjoy the screens.
1. One of the many surface types to explore
2. Huge crystal caves hiding dark secrets
3. Interesting minor and major plot twists
4. Breathtaking but hazardous journeys

Nice screens. I especially like the fourth one. (Incidentally, there's an SGE in the top-left corner of the lava chamber.)

Ooh, it looks very shiny and awesome.

Can't wait to see it finished. :)

Very nice screens.
But remember, the "environmental" style is only for levels which are completely without enemys, challenges a.s.o.

Go on! Looks like a great adventure

That's not a completely rigidly kept rule.

Hahaha, a sour slug migration. Well, it makes a change at least.

The screens look very good, I especially like the second one.

The Myst Reader... wonderful choice, ol' boy! I've been yearning to re-read the trilogy for a dose of inspiration. I can see how it's inspired you in the screenshots. I particularly like the crystal and lava caves, and the slug migration is a nice hint at the mini side-plots... I'm looking forward to this.

The lava glowing effect in the forth screen is very clever.

I thank all for such an amount of positive reactions. They wind up my motivation to continue a little more. A time has come of much work and little spare time, but I'll see my best to progress as well as I can.

@utherdoul:
I'm glad to see another Myst Reader owner haunting around this place. I recently started to re-read as well, and the story keeps fascinating me. Though I'm not so fond on the third book, I expected more of it. But I'm keeping my hopes up that Mister Miller spontaneously finishes his fifth book anytime soon. :^^:

Fifth? So there's a fourth? As far as I was aware, there were only 3...

Anyway, to go back on topic, how's progress going? Any news on an ETA?

Oops, fourth*.

Well, progress is close to zero, but not totally. I started to create a proper editor for myself instead, to enhance the workflow. Don't ask for it. I may ever release it, yet I may not.

Currently I'm working on this huge cave system, just to punish the player if he thinks it'd be a wise idea to start exploring instead of sticking to the story...

It would truly be a great place for an online multiplayer venture, if I may say so myself.

I need a beta tester or two to give me feedback on the storyline, as I am playing my own level too much, things are... obscuring my mind... making me think parts are interesting while they are not.

The story is, AFAIK, rather long, so you'll be playing and testing for some while.
So, anyone  up for the task?

Regards,
Joozey

Yeah, it's hard to make it more better. I guess it all lacks a certain level of detail, but I wont change it anymore, that'll be for the next game.
