Title: Monsters, Ginormo Sword style!
Post by: vdweller on February 25, 2010, 23:42:00
I'm thinking of making a Ginormo Sword (http://babarageo.com/flash/ginormo/)-style game. So I started drawing some monsters!

I'm trying to imitate Ginormo's graphical style. If you like the concept, or simply like squeezing stuff into a few pixels, feel free to contribute to the monster sprites!

Ah those sprites are just awesome! I've never heard of Ginormo sword but this looks good, good luck!

How do you like these dragon sprites?  :)

Nice. Scary. Well, about as scary as lo-res can get.

More of them! Run!!

Well, it's 75 of them so far. A small number :)

I like the skull one. :D

I like everyone but the skull!
The skull looks weird with all the extra detail, if you could remove the colors from it's teeth it might be good.

vdweller, do you make these from a certain color palette?

The skull is a demilich and its teeth are gems. This is the way it has to be

I mostly use the default Photoshop CS2 swatches palette. Occasionaly, I will darken/lighten a color of this palette when I see fit.

Currently there are 115 unique colors in this picture. If I reduce them to 64, almost no visible difference will occur (some colors will be slightly altered to match their palette index counterpart, and this will count towards the retro-ish graphical unification :D)

So do it, and brag that you have only 64 colours. :D

It's meaningless unless you only use 16 colors.  Not that I'm recommending that...

They look wonderful! However, I'd advise you to not start from the idea "plays like Ginormo Sword" because that leads easily to ripping it off. Especially when you're going to use a similar graphical style, people could connect a similar game to it and blame you for ripping it off. Instead, you could start from the idea of 'similar graphical style' but try to derivate as much as you possibly can from the idea of the original game. Those assets would also make a very nice sidescroller or even a light strategy game. Of course the good thing about a Ginormo-like would be the simple code, but there are sure many other types of games that are easy to code. For example, you could take those assets to a simple DungeonMaster-like dungeon roamer!

tl; dr: The art looks great but look out with the idea!

Very cool stuff. I love the spiderwoman and the dark - shadow dude with the red eyes.
I don`t know how to create sprites. Further I`m tired that`s why I drawed this dude in 2 minutes.
If you want so expand and use it, if not... il dunno.

Salmoneus: Those look really nice! The kids are really great-looking, though the giant-thing has rather interested shoulder paddles! :D
Remember though not to change the topic from vdwellers concept and sprites!

NOTE: The monster  images are scaled 200% in order to be more visible. Max monster dimensions are 40x40 pixels. Also, no black outlines!

@Vinterrun: Looks cool, I will edit it (remove outline and scale it down). You can also do this yourself!

@Salmoneous: The first one is like my Giant monster  I think I should add the rest as the "angry city mob" monster family  XD

In general there are monster families, ranging from weak, common members, to ultra-powerful, ultra-rare members. Take the skeletons for example. The family is something like:
skeleton < skeleton warrior < skeleton mage < skeleton hulk

What about drawing families of common mythology monsters? Cerberi? Hydras? Djins? Now that's a challenge!

As for me...well, I think I've lost count. Maybe it's about 128 monsters right now.

I used the 2 first after the skeleton for models. They are not a city mod monsters, it's kids.  :D

The new monsters are awesome! But that white guy, the spikes on his club is showing up on the other side.

Have you started with the game yet or just making sprites? Whatever, keep up the good work.

No, no game yet. But since I'm kinda stalled on my plans for the Infinite Worlds game, I might throw these monsters in a game :)
