Title: [Environmental] Apocalyptic City
Post by: B-Man on June 11, 2009, 10:13:29
Summer vacation just started for me, so I began to work on this level a little bit. Apocalyptic City will have Juni as a lone survivor living in the midst of a destroyed city long abandoned. The level will have little to no text messages, and instead I'll try to convey the story elements of the city, and the disaster that took place, through hand-drawn graphics. There will be a ton of original content, such as custom objects, ambiance, music, sound effects, and tilesets. I plan to work on this for a long time, and I hope to have several distinct sections of the city that will be fun to explore.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a basic idea of what the city will look like: Destroyed (http://features.cgsociety.org/newgallerycrits/g97/87297/87297_1094339936.jpg)

Here's a song type I plan to include: The Rose Window (http://ecco-darksea.com/music/dotf/the_rose_window.mp3)

And here's a spoiler image of the first screen. It's not done yet, but it's a start.
Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll be working on this for a long time, so any ideas or constructive criticism you guys have will be great for motivating me to finish this! :D

Important! Demos will be posted on the archive (http://knyttlevels.com/?page=download).

Update 1: Demo of nearly finished first screen.
Update 2: New demo. A few more screens (which aren't finished) but you get the idea.
Update 3: New demo on the archives, entitled "Apocalyptic City Alpha 1." A new gradient and a few minor tweaks.

The concept hasn't really been fully explored in KS yet, and the screenshot looks promising. I eagerly anticipate this level's release. (Incidentally, would it not be "Post-Apocalyptic City"?)

Wow it looks good! I agree with goog that the post apocalyptic angle hasn't been used very much, but a lot of people talk about it. I'm just waiting for a whole bunch of levels like these to come out, but I think I'm looking forward to yours the most!

Yeah but Deserter Life is really short and never actually goes into a city.

I had a bit of time to work on this today, so I added a generator to Juni's shelter and fixed up those steel girders on the left. There's a download on the original post, if you want to try out the nearly finished first screen. :P

Also, thanks to everyone for the feedback so far! I wasn't expecting this many people to be interested already. :^^:

I really enjoyed the screen. 8) The tileset is AMAZING :whoa: (as your all tilesets). Other graphic like custom objects and different effects is perfect. I am really looking foward it.
Keep working. This level will be really very good. ;)

Hey, I've got some good news and some slightly bad news.

Good news- my old computer went caput, so I got a new one that'll be much more up to date! :D

Slightly bad news- since my old computer died, I lost the progress I made on the level. I didn't lose much... just the interior of Juni's shelter. It shouldn't take long to remake.

Good thing I decided to post a download of the first screen a few days ago, or the level would have been lost entirely!

Well, I'm still getting used to my new computer, but I've re-downloaded Knytt Stories and everything I'll need to work on the level again. I'll recreate the interior of Juni's shelter, and I guess I'll upload the level preview once that's done.

I'm really paranoid of losing progress on levels due to my computer dying on me. It happened to me once while working on The Great Race, and now it's happened to me while working on this. XD

First time, lightning struck my computer and fried it. This time, my registry cleaner randomly decided to delete my operating system, rendering the computer useless.

Thanks. Fallout looks pretty awesome btw. :)

Also, just wanted to post back here to let people know I'm still making a whole-lotta progress. I'll post a little update once the interior of the shelter is done, but man... I'm really having fun making these custom objects! XD

Time for a little update, just in case my computer dies again.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to work on the level too much. I've had a pretty busy summer so far, but I will try to get back to work on this. The update is just a few screens bigger than the last one, and they aren't completely finished, but some of you may be interested in seeing the basic concept of Juni's shelter.

Download is on the archives (http://knyttlevels.com/?page=download).

Your smart-aleck attitude in the beta amuses me. XD

Btw, the way you made the inside of the shelter is epic, I love how it blocks off certain sections, and etc. with shifts.

To be honest, I haven't been able to work on it for the past few months... at all. I've started a busy year of school, and aside from that, I was experiencing weird situations in which KS Manager would randomly refuse to let me update/ change my custom data.

Then again... school is easing up just a bit, and KS Manager is beginning to behave. I guess I'll try to resume work on this, but I gotta be honest, progress will be slow. I'll attempt to update the demo/ screenshots whenever I have something new to report, but no promises.

(And I'll be honest here. I'd be a lot more willing to complete this level if the KS community was as large and active as it was when the game first came out, but I know it's never going to be that way again. :<)

Eh, just downloaded and played the beta and it's so promising. Even if it ends up about running from shelter to shelter with a few shots of the ruined city, it'd probably still be great.

(And I'll be honest here. I'd be a lot more willing to complete this level if the KS community was as large and active as it was when the game first came out, but I know it's never going to be that way again. :<)

You're right, but then the community's still here, and good levels still happen every now and again... if you decide to finish this, I'm sure you'll make quite a few people happy, including me  :)

Alright... I managed to get some time to work on the level today. I didn't do much, but I did spend about ten minutes making a better gradient and polishing a few things here and there. It's not much, but it's more than I've done the last month or so, so I've gone ahead and uploaded my progress to the Knytt Stories Level Archive.

If you want to play it, it's called "Apocalyptic City Alpha 1."

This was one of the first non-nifflas levels I played, back when I didn't even realize there was a forum (hey, it says IF YOU NEED HELP on the Nifflas web site, not IF YOU WANT TO CHAT ABOUT ALL KINDS OF NEW GAMES AND HOW TO MAKE LEVELS AND DO LOTS OF OTHER COOL STUFF).  I was super impressed, and so disappointed when I realized it was just a demo.  The light switch and the music... everything was great.  Please keep it going!

Welp, it has been over two years since anyone has asked about this, but I felt like posting back here. I'm pretty busy with college and whatnot, so I may not ever finish this level entirely, but I think I would at least like to make some more progress.

I was scouring around for some more source material for inspiration, and I noticed that one of my favorite level designers, Farik, had used sounds and music from ERH of freesoundproject.org. ERH had about 90 pages worth of uploaded files, most of which were artistic and interesting, though useless from a game-designing perspective (15 pages of audio recordings from a train station anyone?). However, I was eventually able to sift through the audio and find some very well composed pieces of strange, slightly off-putting music which would be perfect for what I have in mind.

To list a few that I plan to use:

-Atmosphere 2 (http://www.freesound.org/people/ERH/sounds/29591/)
-Eh struuct multi (http://www.freesound.org/people/ERH/sounds/51226/)
-Eastern (http://www.freesound.org/people/ERH/sounds/50853/)

...Just listening to these have helped me to decide where I want the level to go, so I will do my best to make some headway and keep you all up to date whenever I have news to report. :)

Bizarre... I just finished replaying Sputzna and was browsing through ERH's Freesound uploads for the first time mere minutes before seeing this reply. If you feel like it, I'd love to see a bigger list of the gems you have discovered among the uploads!

Good luck with progress. Aiming just to work on the level more is probably more likely to result in a finished level than aiming to complete it, anyway!

P.S. This (http://www.freesound.org/people/farik/downloaded_sounds/) might prove helpful?

Ah, thank you Sergio! That is pretty handy, partly because it lets me see what songs Farik has used, and partly because it shows what songs he hasn't used.  I want to avoid re-using songs so his levels keep their distinct feel to them.

Truth be told, I haven't selected too many other sounds to use from ERH just yet, but there are a few more I have selected that I plan on using fairly early on in the level. I will keep them under wraps for now, but they should be available when I release an updated version on KS Levels. :)
