About Nifflas' Website and Forum / Hello again, guys!
« on: January 09, 2011, 17:03:53 »
I have apparently not been online here for about half a year.
Dunno why, really... or, well, yes I do. I think I started to get a bit tired of all the... shit. Tired of all the waiting for games that never got done. The incident that got me temp banned didn't help much either.
I was already visiting 4chan more or less regularly. But when /vp/ (Pokémon) was launched... damn. I was hooked. I became known pretty fast, and infamous after a month. Was voted the worst tripfag on /vp/. Not many liked me, because I say what I think, and stand for it. And the 4chan community is not the friendliest around. And it sure didn't help that I was a furry. Yeah, I kinda discovered/accepted that thanks to /vp/. Because it's crawling with furry. Or, was, until it got mods. Anyway, I got permabanned for spamming and trolling, when I just defended myself from the millions of trolls. When I asked why I got banned and not they, I got the reply "I don't like you, no one does". Yeah, that's 4chan for ya. After bombing the shit behind seven proxies for a while, Igiari's classmate, who is kinda his best friend now it seems, and kinda my friend too I guess, Introduced my to SveaFur, the official Swedish Furry community. So I just registered for fun, did a few half-serious posts and lurked a bit... and found that it was a small, friendly community, kinda like the Nifforum. However, I soon became the forum clown... kinda because I had this half serious attitude. And I have Aspergers and stuff and am pretty unusual generally. I say what I want and have an unusual way of thinking. Oh, and my huge Lucario obsession probably didn't help either. It was my username, and my avatar. And I kinda went on about it all the time. So I guess most perceived me as childish. The forum consists mainly of adults, and I'm 17. But anyway, one day the site admin decided to screw with me and locked me out of the 18+ section. Even though many other underage users are allowed. He said it was because I was acting so immature. So then I went all NO U and created an alt and got banned. Then I remembered that most people there have Fur Affinity (the largest, most well-known furry community) accounts. SveaFur is managing the official swedishfur group. That would also be a good place to upload my art (I started trying to draw after joining SF for some reason) since you can't do that easily through a proxy. Well, I had a FA account before, but that was just so I could view mature artwork and track a few artists. Now I thought that I could kinda be a member for real. A part of the community. So that's what I did. Even though my IP-ban from SF was lifted shortly after. Anyway, by that time I had completely forgotten about this forum.
Wait, why the heck do I keep writing personal, irrelevant tl;drs no one cares about?

Well, today I noticed NightSky was released, when Nifflas posted a gameplay video on YT. I have already bought and downloaded it, just wanted to revisit the forum.

So, before the obligatory lock, did I miss anything big?

Collaborations / [Game concept project] Times Square
« on: May 26, 2010, 21:05:33 »
I wanted to make a game. And I wanted it to be original. So by just thinking about some of my previous games and other random stuff that drifted through my mind I came up with this idea somehow.

The basic idea is pretty simple. Every screen is a closed room and is divided into X squares (views). All are visible at once and are fixed. Now, the character can jump and stuff and interact with creatures and objects. But for all the squares excpet the one the character is in, time is frozen. Which means that all the objects and creatures there just freeze, then being restored and resuming all actions when they are unfrozen. Or, time is frozen only in the current square. Or, time freezes/unfreezes in all squares the character enters. Or... yeah, you get the idea. Anyway, this would make some very interest puzzling possibilities. I think. Because I haven't come up with any yet. Because I have been busy trying to get the basics to work.
Spoiler: image (click to show/hide)
Everything seems to work except that the creatures are frozen or unfrozen all the time, not caring about views. I know where the fault is, but can not really figure out why or how I can fix it.

Did I mention I use Game Maker? Well it's pretty simple, so you should have no problem understanding if you have basic programming knowledge. The following results in the monster being permanently frozen:
Spoiler: ...and the monster (click to show/hide)

So, can anyone tell me what I missed/did wrong? It seems it's something with the if view is not equal to char.view and the following if frozen is equal to 0, or the whole block.

Oh and ofcourse the source file so you can play around with it!

Many thanks, any answer will be appreciated.

Other Free Games / [Action/Puzzle] Portal
« on: May 17, 2010, 15:20:42 »
http://store.steampowered.com/freeportal/ No longer free.

Portal used to cost money. Until May 24th, it's free. End of story.
Well, technically speaking, there are some strings attached. Fortunately, they're entirely decorative. We just like the way they look, swaying in the gentle breeze created by a million people simultanously fainting from shock at the news that Portal is free. Now you have no reason not to try Portal.
"I have a reason," some of you are probably typing into an angry email. "You see, sir, I own a Mac."
Well guess what: For the first time ever, Portal is also available for the Mac.

Portal is a puzzle / action game set in the Half Life universe, the story takes place in a secret research facility owned by the fictional company Aperture Science, Inc. The game follows an unnamed character (and only visible by creating "portal mirrors") as she is lead through a series of dangerous tests by a sinister robotic voice known as GLaDOS. The character must use inter-dimensional portal technology to overcome the challenges of the test chambers and come closer to discovering the mysteries behind GLaDOS and Aperture Science, Inc.

So, if there is any poor soul that has not played this yet, this is your chance!

Development Showcase / LungeLemon Ninja
« on: April 25, 2010, 16:58:14 »
It's a Ninja. That Lunges Lemons.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin

Yesterday, I decided to do my biology homework. We had been given a paper with a 10x10 grid, and was supposed to, without looking, make 100 dots randomly all over it with a pen. We would then ask anoher person to say 10 numbers between 1 and 100. We would then count how many dots were in those 10 grids in total. This may not seem like biology, but it was something about figuring out how many individuals of a species there was in an area by taking random samples all over the place. Anyway, I realised I forgot that paper at school. Hmph. And I didn't want to make a new one. Even though it's not supposed to be in til Thursday, and I could take the paper home on Monday. But the geek I am, I decided to let the computer do this for me! So I made a program in Game Maker that generated 10 random rounded values between 0 and 99, which started over if any of the 10 had the same value, then created 100 random objects that were assigned one random rounded value between 0 and 99, and if that value matched any of the original 10 values a global variable went up by 1. Then that variable was drawn. Then you could press a key to restart. Then I spiced it up by adding several tracking variables that tracked how many times it had restarted (not counting the restarts when two of the original values became identical), the total value of the global variable (the result) and the mean of it. Then I decided to look at some old games I made. I mean, heck, the last time I used GM was several months ago! And I stumbled across this. My best game, even though it's unfinished. It had great potential. Such a shame...

This project was started by me and 3 friends about a year ago. I did all the programming. But when we after a month or so didn't have a single sprite, cuz our artist was slower than slowpoke, we just stopped working on it and waited til we would get anything from him. I worked a little on it once in a while ayway, and managed to make what could be called a demo, consisting of one small level, one big level and one boss. Except that all sprites was placeholders stolen from the GM platform engine, which was used (but altered) btw. When that was done, I just waited for the artist. Who never drew a single pixel, even though we DOITNAO every day. And it was DEAD.

Since there's only placeholder sprites and it's not finished, I would like you to pretend that:
The main character is a Ninja.
The yellow dots are Lemons.
The green/blue dots are Limes.
The mushrooms are coins.
The level sign is different.
The ammo symbol is a Lime.
The monsters are different.
The tileset is different.
The boss monster is a big white monkey.
The sound effects are different.
There is music.
There is 21 levels.

Controls:
Arrow Keys: Move/Jump/Climb
Ctrl/Z: Lunge a Lemon (can crit)
Space/Shift/Alt/X: Lunge a Lime (stronger but limited ammo)
F2: Restart level
F1: Brings up some blargh I forgot to remove
Spoiler: Cheats (click to show/hide)

Map contains zip and rar with both executable and source:

EDIT: Since there seem to be some misunderstandings, this game is about a Ninja that Lunges Lemons.

Forum Games / Describe a Feeling
« on: April 15, 2010, 19:21:46 »
When you see an image, hear a piece of music or watch a movie, you get a feeling. That feeling sometimes stays with you for a long time, but no matter how much or how hard you try you can't describe it with words. You just feel.
In this forum game we will try to describe feelings, without words. We are going to describe a feeling with a feeling.

Okay, now I'm going to explain it in English:
I will start with posting a picture. A picture that awakens strong feelings for me (I can't stop laughing no matter how many times I look at it!). Another person will then post another piece of art that (s)he thinks describes my art and/or the feeling (s)he got, or that awakens the same kind of feeling. Then another person will respond to that picture and so on.

All possible forms of art are allowed, like:
Images
Music
Videos
Video Games
And everything else that is possible for one to experience on a computer.

Poems and literature are allowed, but discouraged, since I would like to keep these pieces of art as word-less as possible. Same goes for caption pictures and the like. But don't feel too restricted, especially if it's hard to avoid, or if you really think your art is a perfect match.

I thought this would be the best place to post about a group like this. If the admins disagree, then move it.

Well, the subject says it all; this is a group for people who use the Knytt forum theme. If you use it, tell us why and join! If anyone wants to make userbars, as I suck at that, they're welcome to do so.

Anyway, I use the Knytt theme because I like white. Yay.

Other Free Games / [Strategy] Spybot: The Nightfall Incident
« on: March 01, 2010, 15:30:13 »
You nostalgia you lose. This was an old game on lego.com until they removed it. Because they remove old games for some reason and they suck. But anyway, I always went to that site when I was maybe 10-12. And I remember I loved this game. So one day this game just pops up in my head, and I'm like "awesome, I have to play that again" but saw it was taken away from lego.com so I googled it. I love google. You better do that too... they will rule the world one day, you know.

Anyway, here's some stuff about how you play it (though the tutorial covers pretty much everything):
This strategy game is turn based and uses a grid map. There are some special grids where you place your units (or "upload programs" as the game says, because you are a hacker in the game and have to defeat the enemy programs to hack whatever you are hacking), basically your starting positions. You can upload any units but only one unit for every grid. All units (programs) have three attributes; move, max size and size. Move is basically how many grids a unit can move each turn. Max size is how big a unit can be. Because in this game all the units behave like the classic snake, they get a tail behind them when they move. When the max size is reached, the "oldest" part is removed when it moves. Size is simply the current size of a unit, it dies if the size falls to 0 or below. All units also have one or two commands (skills) (attack/nerf/buff/heal). Commands have four values: Size requirement, effect, range and... let's call it "recoil". Size requirement means that the attack can only be executed if the unit's size is at a certain number or above. This number is shown in parantheses after the attack name (eg DATASLAM(6)) (is usually 0 and not displayed). Effect is how the target is affected. The most common effect is "damage" (a normal attack), reducing your opponents size. Other skills reduces the opponents move attribute. There are also units that can boost other friendly units move, max size or size (move can not go above 10, but max size can be infinite). There is also a unit called Bit Man that has two very special skills that can delete or create a grid. Very useful for reaching "unreachable" areas, creating shortcuts, or keeping the enemy away. Range is how many grids away the attack can hit a target. Recoil is how much the size is reduced on the unit itself (is usually 0 and not displayed). The three latter are shown in the description window when you click the command button (it's name).

I think this covers pretty much... no wait! Watch out for horrible puns.

Other Free Games / [Browser MMORPG] EpicDuel
« on: January 29, 2010, 14:11:36 »
This is another wonderful game by Artix Entertainment. But they they didn't create it from start.
There was two dudes who made this game, heavily inspired by AE's AdventureQuest. One of them did all the coding, while the other one did the graphics. However, they soon realized that they couldn't continue like this. Two people just aren't enough. They already had many players, and earned some money too, but they couldn't satisfy the fans enough. Guess who they called? Artix Entertainment. When the AE team played their game, they saw that it was very close to their own games, one could even have thought they had made it! So they adopted these two guys to the AE team. It's AE's game now, but they still let the two guys decide many things, and let them be responsible (Game Masters) for it.

One thing that they changed: They made it free. Maybe not 100%, but free enough to qualify in this subforum.
You could buy "Elite" status before, and only Elite players could buy certain items and such. I should also mention that the game was still in Beta when they took over. Anyway, they only let upgraded members in their other games play the beta. And possibly already existing Elite players, I don't really know, but it doesn't matter. Because beta is over. The system they have now is that some things cost "Varium". You can buy Varium with real money, but you get a few hundred (don't know exactly) when you start, and that should be enough if you don't waste it.
Now there are different things that cost varium, and they cost different amounts. Houses, for example, costs alot. The cheapest is 1k. Which means that free players can't get any houses, but they don't have any other function that looks anyway. You can also start a "faction" (guild/clan) for some amount. I'm not sure what it is now, they recently raised it, but it is possible that no free player can afford it. But it's a waste anyway, like houses, so join an existing faction instead. It's not hard to find some random guy recruiting to his new faction, just run around the starting area. You can also change your look, and there are a few haircuts that cost 25 Varium to change to. But beware, it will then cost 25 Varium every time you change your look (the game don't register the haircut as bought) unless you change haircut to a free one (which are truly ok, no need for Varium haircuts IMO, even though I bought Varium for 50 bucks). So, stick to the free haircuts. And you can also buy more bag space, but the 20 you start with will do just fine. I mean, there is no need for 20 different weapons... but some Health/Energy Packs/Boosters always come in handy. But let's say you have an alt main weapon, gun, aux and armor. Still room for 16 Boosters, so no problem here.
And the last thing that costs Varium is weapons. But not many, and they don't cost much. To save Varium I recommend to not buy Varium weapons in the beginning, and to stick to them for as long as possible. There is no need to switch equipment often, Varium or free. I think there are some weps that cost loads of Varium, but you can skip those. Varium weps aren't that much better than free ones, only slightly.

Summary: The game can be played 100% free, but a few selective things cost Varium which can be bought for real money, though you get an amount in the beginning that should be enough through the whole game. This game should absolutely qualify as free, because I can point out some other games that have been here for a while now that are way worse.

What's that? I only wrote about the history and about how it's free? I didn't add screenshots or even the slightest description about the game? Well, I will, I promise, in an hour or so. Now I must rest my fingers. Oh, and I will quickly add a link before I rush:

So, this is a turn based strategy PVP RPG with levels, skill trees, weapons and stuff.

Knytt Stories Level Editing Support / Common Bugs
« on: December 22, 2009, 22:09:58 »
Oh look what I found in my random stuff folder. I remember posting it on the old forum and getting positive feedback... so why not here.
-------

I have noticed that almost every story I have played have contained bugs! Especially wallswims, voids and graphical errors. It's not easy to create a 100% bug free level, but here is my guide:
  • The most basic thing to do is to test your level and try to find bugs.
  • The most common bug is wallswim. That means you go to another screen; into a solid object. It can look like this:
    • To prevent wallswimming; If you place a solid object at the edge of the screen, always put another object with the same form at the other screen (see pictures below).
      YES: NO: NOT!:
    • You can detect wallswims with a program called KS Level Checker.
  • Another common bug is void screens, screens that is total empty and looks like this:
    • You can prevent players from reaching void areas by making walls with "no climb tiles" at the edges of the level, but the stuff below is better to use.
    • This wall can't be climbed because of the "ceiling":
    • You can also make an "endless ocean", place a long row of water that can't be jumped over:
    • Reachable areas that is meant to be empty should show a suitable background image, not the void background. To do this, go to that screen in the level editor and simply select a background. If the wanted background is already shown but the screen is marked as "empty", you can just hit save.
  • Graphical errors are not so bad, but they don't look good.
    • It can happen that you place a tile in the wrong layer, but there is no way to prevent that but being careful and test the level.
    • The same as above if you place the wrong tile.
    • If you want to have a custom tileset in your story, place it under Knytt Stories\Worlds\Your Level\Tilesets, not under Knytt Stories\Data\Tilesets. You can also do this in the KS Manager.
    • Something you can prevent is air-walking. Any creature that moves can move over gaps and in the air:
To prevent that, simply place solid objects so the creature is "trapped".
      YES: NO:
  • And I also want to add that I've seen many Challenge/Environmental levels. A level can't be both of them, Environmental is only compatible with Playground and Misc since it can't contain any enemies, jumps, challenges or puzzles.

I will update sometime later.

-------
Thanks LPChip for sending me the version on the old forum!
Also fixed the Level Composer link. It linked to a topic on the old forum, but since this is the new forum it linked to a completely unrelated topic here. But now it's a download link. Fixed again. Didn't notice there was a topic about it on this forum. It's even a sticky... lol.

Saira / About save files.
« on: December 13, 2009, 15:43:45 »
So. When you download Saira you can choose installer or zip. I chose installer cuz I'm lazy. But then I realised it was the non-portbale version, but decided to play through the demo anyway.
Now I absolutely want the portable version. How should I do? I think I read somewhere that the uninstaller leaves the savefiles alone, so I can maybe just uninstall it and download the zip version to the same directory? Or do I have to move the savefile to some place? And where is it? Or is this impossible and I have to start over?

Granted. But since only the outside changes, you turn lesbian.

1. He assumed I was heterosexual (that I liked girls in the first place), but there is no way he can know that.
2. That post is from the game "Corrupt a Wish". In that game, you grant someones wish but "corrupt" it, E.G. you make it backfire or anything else bad. Being lesbian is not something bad, but LPChip seems to think that.
3. He have said several times that it is offensive and disrespectful to post "wat".

I think you get my point. LPChip complains about being offended by users posting wat, yet he offends bi- and homosexuals.
At least I would be offended if I wasn't hetero.

Now I want an explanation from LPChip. Also, start discussing.
