Title: Saira on WINE
Post by: minmay on December 12, 2009, 19:34:13
I cannot get it to work.  The closest I could come was to put the game in windowed mode and emulate a virtual desktop, where about half the screen was completely cut off and thus the game was unplayable.

Anyone else tried?  Anyone else tried something that worked?

I just downloaded and it doesn't work for me either. I have windows XP. The entire window is pretty much black. I can hear the music. I was really eager to try it. The fact that the same dl can't be moved over to another PC means I can't try it on my laptop either.

It can be moved, just get the portable .zip version or re-download it at the new computer.

I've had a little luck getting Saira to run in WINE.

It's not all happy times though.

If anyone know how to fix such a black thingie... please do tell.

I'll report back with any progress I make.

EDIT: maybe I should mention. Up to that point everything has run very nice, apart from the weird black area.
EDIT2: hmm... (EDIT3:) some fonts are messed up.
@Nifflas: what fonts are used in the game?

EDIT4:
* The menu box opens just fine and other boxes also.
* Text in menu works fine.
* Photos doesn't show up. They're there, they're just all black.
* It's the small text, for instance where you mount the the parts in the teleporter. The text in that box is messed.
* When looking at the window and the black frame (see picture), the game-image is pushed down the height of the upper black bar and the right side is covered by the bar in that position.
* Puzzles appear to work fine. At least the two first ones do.

EDIT5:
Application crashed when I tried to run the Device Solver with a puzzle.

Fetched the newest WiNE package for ubuntu 9.10, downloaded the portable version of the game, ran terminal, navigated to the game, typed in "wine saira.exe" - ENTER!

Then it said: missing *****.dll (don't remember which one) and I googled and downloaded it and added the library to the emulated C:/

Then I ran again and... well.. you know the result.  ;)

thanks!
Edit: i get "cannot load binaryarray.mfx. This object might..." etc
Did you somehow fix this while making another program work then forgot about it?

I can't have done that, no. I hadn't installed wine prior. Another thing I did however, which I forgot to mention: I copied all my .ttf fonts from my windows install to the font directory in the emulated c:/

I get this. Its so off center it's ridiculous.. I'm unsure what the problem could be.

@Smeagle; You need to download MSVCP60.dll and put it in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 to get rid of that error.

Hmm, same problem as I have, though more severe it seems.

If you could resize or compress your image a little more it would put less strain on the less fast connections.

Oh, that's my fault :)

what.. how it is your fault. o-o

@Lightningeagle; The thing is that yours and mine are the same, but I think our resolution makes yours work better because you cant even see the ground with how far mine is down. 1440x900

Nifflas contracted me to write a few extensions for Knytt Stories/Saira - BinaryArray.mfx was one of them. When I compiled it, I linked dynamically to the MSVC6 runtime instead of statically, so that's why it requires the DLL.

Oh okay. Any insight on this resolution problem?

You could try reporting it to the WINE developers, as it must be a bug in the WINE implementation of D3D via OpenGL. Maybe there's an edge build of WINE you can try?

Nope. I have latest dev version of wine with appropriate pack files and such. I'l try making a report about it.

I feel terrible about bumping this, but has anyone made any progress with this?  I would really like to be able to play this game.

No, it isn't, and there is no possible way that it could be, ever.

(psst try looking at the website links)

I thought I recognised your username from somewhere! I'm the one who founded J2NSM (if you've heard of it) and I also wrote the Forest server tool, Hotel Manager and possibly some other random crap. I haven't been active since about 2006 though :P Jam CC! (but RR and AW before that)

Bumping an old thread here, as I'm having slightly different results trying to run Saira, FiNCK and nightsky (demos) in WINE on Mac OSX.

Before I ran the games, I downloaded and installed Microsoft Visual C++ and now the games 'run'. however, there is no picture, just a blank white window. I can hear the sounds and music, and I can 'play' the game, in that when I press the jump button and arrow keys, I hear the corresponding sound effects from the game.

Is there any way I can get the visuals working as well? If so, then I will probably buy one or two of these games :)
