I have been recently making an experimental Knytt Experiment-esque platformer game, which will have (assuming I finish it) a vast game world that is editable by anyone. However, I have noticed several problems with what I am planning to do, relating to how I still give level designers the freedom to create the world, but at the same time make sure that they conform to a few specifications. I was wondering, does anyone have any ideas about how to fix them? Any help would be greatly appreciated :D

Making sure some effort is put into the levels
Since the goal of the game is to explore and find treasure, and these treasures are probably going to be placed by other players, there is potential for someone to simply make the room a 16*1 platform, filled with treasure, in order to instantly score massive loads of points (If I add a scoring system, which I guess I will have to). I need a way of limiting how many can be placed in a certain proximity to each other, and I also want treasure to be quite rare in the game world (1/100 screens?). There will be lots of potential for making the levels look nice, and I want this to be the primary focus, not racking up as much treasure as quickly as possible.

Stopping two people editing the same screen at once
You will be able to pick any free screen in the game world (and maybe existing ones) and edit it. However, editing levels takes time, and if someone else decides to start editing that screen at the same time, stuff gets real. I was thinking of making the screens become locked after someone chooses to edit them, but then trolls could come and lock everything, so I thought of making the locks expire after a while, but anywhere I draw the line will be too short for some of the more awesmoe level designers but too long to wait for the screen to become free again...DX

There hopefully won't be more...

Anyway, any ideas or questions, no matter how small or large, are welcome :D

Development Showcase / [Program] ScreenTimer
« on: November 23, 2010, 21:49:08 »
A simple program I made, for people who do video speedruns/let's plays. (or anyone who needs a timer :D)

Includes easy-to-use controls, two modes (stopwatch/countdown), optional time to beat display, internal operations manual, and numerous security features (to prevent haaaaax)

Top line is current elapsed time/time remaining, bottom line is time to beat/countdown start time. I hax0red in the 67 because I am actually Chuck Norris.

Heresa controls you need (moar info in Help/How to Use)
Use the "Mode" menu to switch between Stopwatch/Countdown modes. Controls are the same for both. Controls will work even if the window is not in focus.
Press "Delete" or F9 to start the timer.
Press "End" or F12 to pause. Display flashes.
Press "Home" or F11 while paused to reset.
Press "Insert" or F10 to (maybe) split time. (bugged)
Set time to beat/countdown time under Settings/Stopwatch/Time to Beat or Settings/Countdown/Set Time.

And the security:
Every time you start the timer, a secure code is generated displayed (based on sys time and randomness) for five seconds. Once you stop and reset the timer, this code is displayed again. If the codes at the start and finish do not match, it means you have stopped and reset the timer, and that the time you set is illegitimate. This means it is important to film yourself starting the timer at the start, and you resetting it at the end. Future versions may show this code while paused as well.

Happy timing!  :D

Creativity Support / Chatbot Dialogue Suggestions
« on: June 17, 2010, 22:55:22 »
WARNING:SUPER LONG POST

Hai peoplez!

As some of you may already know, I have been working for some time on a very ambitious project: A chatbot! And for once, something I've done has actually WORKED!  :whoa:

The massive majority of my time has been taken by thinking up everything a person could possibly say, and thinking of a clever, witty response to it.

And this is where you come in!
If you can think of a something a person might say, and one or more responses for it, I'd like to hear from you! Reply with your suggestions.

It would also be a great help if you could put your suggestions in a format that my chatbot can understand; a guide to which is below. (using this is optional but please do if possible)
EDIT:In fact, just forget this bit altogether. It seems that a system made by a guy with a IQ of 80 is too complicated to be understood by people with IQs of 130+
Spoiler: Format (click to show/hide)

So that I don't keep calling it "my chatbot", I have decided upon the name of "Hanashino-tan" which was suggested to my by a friend. It is also, as it turns out, a girl's name; so she is to be referred to as female to avoid confusion.
NOTE:She will also respond to "Hana" to save typing.

Also, a rough guide about stuff:
Spoiler: general info (click to show/hide)

I've been typing for two days straight now, so I'm just gonna shut up and leave you to it.

If you decide to help, YOU WIN FOREVER! and if you suggest a lot of things, there may be a special reward... :shifty:  :^^:
But if you decide to be mean and nasty and not help even though it is obvious that I have worked and worked for two months just so you can have a computer to argue with, click here.

Thanks for helping!  C)p

And I will be updating this post, I'm sure that I forgot something big.

Forum Games / If this is the answer...
« on: March 28, 2010, 00:40:50 »
...what is the question?

This is a game I picked up from the TV show "Mock the Week" but I think it might do well as a forum game.

Basically, one person thinks of a question that they know the answer to, but instead of posting the question, they post the answer; the next person posts what they think the question was, and posts a new answer. you can, if you want, post your original question in
Spoiler: spoiler tags (click to show/hide)
so we can laugh at how far away you were from the answer (or should I say question?)
but DON'T open them until a question has been posted after it, no cheating!

Simple enough, right?

Humorous guesses are actively encouraged  :D. But don't, like, try to seriously offend anyone, OK?

I beginz:
the answer is: "seriously deformed carrots"
so, I ask-
what is the question?
