Creativity Support / Running Knytt Stories on Wine (Linux)
« on: September 24, 2010, 12:34:02 »
I'm trying to run Knytt Stories on my Linux Laptop (Dell Inspiron E1705) on Fedora 13.

I receive the error:

"Cannot load DirectoryPacker.mfx. This object might need an external program or library not yet installed."

Since I use MMF, the extension .mfx means a MMF extension.

I was wondering how everyone else running Linux got KS to work.

I am trying to do this with the zip version of KS.

Thanks!

Development Showcase / The Story Continues - Preview
« on: September 19, 2010, 21:56:19 »
-*-*-*-*-
No I have not abondoned WaCS, I just thought a completely new idea would intrigue me more than an older one.
-*-*-*-*-

Project Overview
TSC (The Story Continues) is an infinite series of game episodes staring [young girl] on her journey through the land of [continent]. She will have many quests to fulfill given to her by the inhabitants of [continent].

The Story Continues is the culmination of an idea that I have worked on for some time. Each game will be released as a small (5 - 10 minute) episode either weekly or monthly staring a young girl exploring the various environments of her world and meeting colorful characters along the way.

The intriguing aspect of TSC is that it's completely community driven (except for the game's coding). Anyone can suggest plot pieces, submit art or music, or just all around assist me in setting up the game (website presentation, gameplay videos, etc.)

---

The art style for the game will be heavily inspired by Nifflas' games Knytt and Stories. The music and sfx will also have the ambient feeling that those games have as well.

But what separates TSC from Knytt and Knytt Stories is its gameplay and plotline. There will be times when each episode contains its own little story, and episodes that will span multiple games. Also, along the way, elements of the gameplay can be suggested. Be it the player has to escape into space (now the game is a shoot 'em up) then the player crashes into a remote forest and must find their way out (elements of survival games and a large maze).

I will be looking for a lot of help from anyone, be themselves a game developer to just a surfer of the vast internet, anyone and everyone can help make this world a reality.

Nifflas' Sources / ModArchive Story: Operator Status source?

Does anyone know if Nifflas will release the source for MASOS? Or at least the engine?

Nifflas' Sources / dmc2.mfx - WaDF source opening help
« on: April 05, 2010, 02:23:52 »
I know, this is probably to dumbest question to ask, and I know Looki covered it in the WaDF source thread, but it didn't seem to work for me.

Anyone know how I can fix the "Cannot load extension dmc2.mfx" error?

Development Showcase / WaCS beta + Tutorial video

Enjoy!

For those who don't know what WaCS is:

Premises: During his work on a massive bomb to freeze the world, Dr. Cliché had failed and created a ball. Though unknown by all except Dr. Cliché himself, his younger cousin, Fredrik Commonplace, who had not yet received his PhD was also working on a project of his own. His project, though not as devious as Dr. Cliché's was to create the ultimate ball for children to place with. After assembling his ball to perfection, Dr. Cliché entered his lab and pushed Fredrik into the portal his was developing so he could enter through his computer into the internet. After seeing his master disappear into oblivion, the ball bounced into Dr. Cliché's head, giving him amnesia. Dr. Cliché waddled out of the lab and back into his own to work on the project. Since Dr. Cliché could not remember the correct formula for his devastating bomb, it malfunctioned and created a ball. So Fredrik Commonplace's ball saved humanity for only a short time. After kicking Dr. Cliché out of Fredrik's lab he then proceeds to enter the portal to save his creator.

Creativity Support / WaCS Creative Input references/easter eggs
« on: April 04, 2010, 18:00:03 »
I am almost finished with the tutorial level, (I'm stuck on making teleporters, the engine doesn't like the ball moving). I know I promised a tutorial level to be out yesterday but I got caught up watching The Blind Side. I will upload a video and the download, so for those who don't want to download it, they can just watch the video.

So now to the fun stuff, what I need is interesting ideas to be put in the game as secrets or easter eggs. The ideas will most likely be put in as accessible computer terminals, but there is room for other ways for input.

It's no guarantee that all ideas will be put in.

I am also looking for Niff Forum references too, as this is a collaboration with the forum.

Ideas:
- Yukabacera (His Fallout 3 information)

Thanks forum!

Within a Complex System
A WaDF Fangame

Hey guys, I have had this idea of using the WaDF ball engine created by Niff for a long time. This project I am presenting you all is not to undermine the hard efforts of Pick Yer Poison and all who worked on the WaDF 2 project. The coding and engine of WaCS will be created by me (except the ball engine of course). All I am asking of you guys is to supply my poor drawing skills with some tilesets and computer/system music. I am not asking your full participation in this as I will be putting it all together myself.

I sent Nifflas a PM about this but have not had a response thus far so I will continue until he tells me to stop.

The game will be filled with humorous references to Nifflas' games as well as the community and the internet in general (though the game will not be complete laugh-fest). I hope you guys like the idea and would like to contribute.

Updates & Other:

Secrets/easter egg thread: http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=3060.0
First beta and video thread: http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=3062.msg35698#new

UPDATE 1: Looking for level designers, post in thread and I'll send you a PM for specifications.

Level 1 Plot v1.0:

Fredrik Commonplace's ball entered the portal to the Internet and he has arrived in a strange city. He explores terminal messages from the High Authority.

These messages tell citizens of ordinances and announcements.

The ball will encounter traps and strange black liquid water. It will explore the city finding terminals hacked by the resistance members giving encouraging messages to the people. The ball must make his way to a portal leading out of the city.

The portal will lead to a strange natural place. This "forest outside the city” will still have terminals though these terminals will be malfunctioning. The strange black liquid will be more prevalent here.

You will now be seeing people here who will tell you the origin of the liquid. That it is spreading into the city at an uncontrollable rate.

Creativity Support / Few questions...
« on: March 27, 2010, 20:42:37 »
1. Solved - thanks SiamJai How can I go about creating foot steps similar to those of Knytt and Juni? I am making my own ambient game and would like a similar atmosphere as to that of KS.

2. Solved - thanks LPChip I'm looking for music on ModArchive (ambient obviously) but I would also like to make my own. I've used a tracker before, so no worries there, I just don't know how to make something ambient in a tracker. Is there a tutorial someone could point me to?

3. Thanks "me" (I think what I have is good enough for now) I enjoy trying my hand at making simple pixel characters for my game, but is there anything someone could point me to for making land? Because the land I currently have doesn't look pixely enough for my taste, if you want to take a look I would gladly upload a pic.

4. Solved - thanks AClockworkLemon What picture ediotr does Nifflas use for Knytt and KS? Is it MS Paint? Or something more high-end?

Thanks for a lot for answering (in advance no less)

Creativity Support / Question about Saira sprites
« on: December 29, 2009, 22:04:26 »
Sorry if this should be in the Saira category.

I was wondering if the Saira characters sprites are free to use if properly credited. I'm sorry if this has already been answered/asked, I was just wondering.

The character sprites are located in the Saira/Data/Sprites folder.

Thanks for clearing this up.

Development Showcase / a small bit of literature.
« on: April 25, 2009, 00:31:54 »
I haven't been on for a while guys, sorry for that. I've been trying to learn C, so I could then step into Objective C and then the world of iPod app developers. Work on Night will be stalled, I may resume later, but I don't know if I'lll feel the drive to complete once my start my app project. Anywhoo, let's step into the water already, shall we?

Age of Gears Prologue : http://mattthesage.deviantart.com/art/Age-of-Gears-Prologue-120353413

Critique would be nice, but I don't think I will change my War piece, unless it has to do with grammatical errors.

Development Showcase / [Project] Night
« on: April 05, 2009, 01:30:20 »
Now, the title for my game may seem all too similar to Night Game. It isnt really similar to NG in game play, the closest I could say this game is related to of Niff's works is the Knytt series. Night involves a mysterious man exploring his world trying to find the Light Piece to restore daytime to his homeland. He will travel across the land looking for clues as to the where-abouts of the Light Piece. Once it is found, light and happiness will be restored.

[April 5, 2009] Soron suggested using gradients with my graphics, but I am terrible at things like that. So, just like the music, just offer yourself up and I'd greatly appreciate the help. Like with the music, any help will be mentioned in the credits.

[April 4, 2009] I am in need of good ambient music, I have some picked out from Nifflas's creations, but I would like people to show my their works or ones that they admire.
