Sometimes, I get bored enough to start working on custom stuff for KS, but not enough to actually build a level that would put said content to use. Instead of just letting these tilesets/gradients/COs collect digital dust in my hard drive, I thought it'd be a much better idea to start a topic here and post some of this content from time to time, so they have at least a chance to be useful to somebody else. All the stuff posted here will be released under the usual "KS Use/Edit OK" license.
I'll start with this mod of Juni's default template that I named (in a sheer display of originality) "Heroine Juni", complete with tiara and flapping cape, intended for use in a KS+ level. Here's a preview of the running animation:
Below is the modded spritesheet. Feel free to use it in your level and/or make any edits you want. I also have the .XCF (GIMP) file with all the individual layers, which makes it extremely easy to change the dress and cape colors. If you're interested in a recolored version (or the .XCF file itself), feel free to ask.
-
Nice cape movement there. I grabbed a copy, though I doubt I'll use it. :)
-
Thanks. Basically, I just wanted to try my hand at drawing a caped character, even if I didn't have an idea for a game at that moment. Capes are cool :P2
There's a minor issue I forgot to mention, though. I made the cape pretty long, so it overlaps a little with the umbrella sprite when Juni's falling, which may look weird to some people.
-
For reasons I cannot even begin to comprehend, I had the sudden urge to animate this little guy here:
The consumption of copious amounts of tortilla chips may or may have not played a role in the creation of this random sprite.
If you want to use it as a decorative critter in your KS level, feel free to grab the attached ZIP file containing the PNG animation strip and the CO code.
-
More random critters: a blue rolling cube and a glowing firefly. They can be used in vanilla KS levels.
(http://vegetal.eb-creativos.com/ksstuff/content/rolling_cube_preview.gif) (http://vegetal.eb-creativos.com/ksstuff/content/firefly_preview.gif)
The firefly is similar to the CO I used in Exploring the Golden Land (https://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6691.0), but this one has a different movement pattern and is somewhat more detailed. The ZIP file contains multiple colored versions (yellow, blue, green and pink), and includes code for two different objects based on the same animation (this is so you can mix up multiple fireflies on the same screen without all of them moving at the exact same speed).

A blond knytt dude with a pompadour. Because.

I started drawing this tileset during an evening of pure and unadulterated boredom a few months ago, while having nothing particularly in mind except the vague idea of creating an alternate take on the original "Orange Grass" tileset (Default set #10). I wasn't 100% happy with the way it was shaping out, nor could I think of any level idea to put this set to good use, so I decided to fill in most of the few remaining tiles and post it here. Feel free to use it in your levels and/or cannibalize any parts you like for your own KS tilesets.

Beautiful tiles. Everything has this faux ambient occlusion effect that looks gorgeous. I really like the concept of 're-imagining' classic KS tilesets. Might
steal use borrow that for my current project ;)
-
Thanks :) I "remastered" some of the default tilesets for my last level, adding a texture layer and some extra shading/shine to the original tiles, but then I thought it'd be more interesting to actually try to re-draw one of them from scratch, giving it my own spin. Problem is, I started this on a whim without any plans for it at all, so I ran out of inspiration quickly. Feel free to use the set in your KS projects in any way you want!
-
Nicely done! I especially like the rolling slopes.
I made a screen to try it out.
-
Thanks :) Originally, I was going to make a single set of slightly-rounded corners for each wall, but then I thought it'd be a better idea to feature both regular straight corners (with no transparent pixels) and slopes as a curved alternative. I think this approach makes the tileset a bit more versatile.
-
Inspired by this level by Flarry (https://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6706.0), I decided to make this retro-style tileset using the classic 16-color EGA palette that many old DOS games used back in the day. It can be used to build temples, castles and the like, although it also has a few outdoors elements (intended mostly for backgrounds).
I made two matching sets with different colors for the wall blocks, and a similar retro-style night background to go with them. Below are a couple demo pictures:
A few notes:
- The stairs can be climbed just by walking/running.
- The torch/lamp thingy is designed to work with the small flame (Bank#8 Obj#8), and the bonfire is intended to be used with the big flame (Bank#8 Obj#6).
- The light/shading tiles have an invisible square collision mask so they can be put in layer 3 over any wall tile (or anything else you want to be treated as a solid block) without having to add invisible objects.
- Fun fact: If you use KS+ and slap an AND tint with the color set to light gray (#808080 hex, 8421504 in decimal) to your screen, you'll get a less detailed and more posterized version of the set, resembling the default color palette of the ZX Spectrum microcomputer.
Feel free to use/remix any of these graphics for your own retro-themed levels. I'll probably make some edits/tweaks and release an updated version in the near future, so any ideas and feedback on how to improve this set will be more than welcome.
-
Added a couple more EGA-like backgrounds to the previous set.
-
That sunset background is great! Or is it sunrise?
...Never mind, the filename reveals the truth! Or... does it?
-
That's amazing. I like the fade-in shading tiles.
-
Thanks for the comments!
@Sergio: Glad you liked it! It was supposed to be a sunset landscape, hence the sun being placed on the left side (although this is very shaky reasoning, since the perspective here is inherently wrong), but simply flipping the picture horizontally should do the trick. Also, if we take into account that I spend ~99% of my time indoors, it wouldn't surprise me if the sun had somehow turned green years ago and I just hadn't still noticed, so my depiction may not be the most accurate anyways :P
@canteven: I started adding shading tiles to pretty much all of my tilesets, because they can add a lot of detail to a screen without requiring multiple variations of the same tiles. I didn't want to use transparent tiles for this set, since I felt that would defeat the purpose of trying to emulate the "pure" 16-color style, so I went for a dithering-based approach this time. I'm not 100% sure the white tiles were worth including, though. Maybe I could have used that space for more ornaments or maybe some grass-covered mountains.
In other news, I added some more detail to the clouds in the "day" background.
-
I saw a purple night landscape in a video and thought it looked pretty good, so I decided to draw a random background using that as inspiration. I don't really have any use for it as of now, so... here it is, in case anyone wants to use it as a gradient/background (or even for a title screen or cutscene). I made a "clean sky" version and a "dusty" version with a curtain of floating sand.
(just a hastily-made test screen)
I didn't attach the pictures directly to the post since the image files are fairly big for what they are (>130KB). Instead, here's a link to a shared Dropbox folder where I also plan to upload any similar backgrounds I may draw:

Another random background made out of boredom. This time, it's something that resembles an asteroid field. Might be useful for space-themed levels.

Yet another gradient. This one started as a bunch of random red scribbles and ended up as a tileable underwater background.

(this is just a demo pic -- the actual gradient is 200x240 and repeats 3 times)

A collection of very simple flags that can be used to decorate castles, fortresses and the like. Alternatively, you can put one right next to a Knytt and make them pretend they just funded their own country or something.
The attached pack includes 11 different colored flags.
-
No new content this time, but since I only used this particular tileset for a couple screens in a tutorial level, I thought I should post it here as well. It's a simple mod of "Not Quite Dr. Cliche's Underwater Lab" (tileset #6) with different patterns and colors. Nothing too fancy, but it might have its uses.
Also, I've edited the first post to include a list of links to all the stuff I released in this thread, which may be helpful to users who are looking for specific stuff (animations, tilesets...).

A quick tileset I put together in a flash of inspiration after a pattern of 3-colored glowy plants in a cushion caught my eye :P
(http://vegetal.eb-creativos.com/ksstuff/sshot/almost_cursed_demo.png)
As a bonus, I've also attached a pack of very simple glow animations that can be used with the glowy plants in this set.
-
A rather hastily made "normal" version of the previous tileset:
I also updated the "Almost Cursed Fields" tileset to fix a couple mistakes and make the grass usable on corner tiles.
Edit: Didn't want to make a new post just for this, but I made a bonus tileset with a bunch of extra solid tiles for both of these sets.

Thanks!
Time for an interior tileset now. I just finished this one, heavily inspired in the original Quake:
Edit: Added a tileable sky texture that can be used as a background. You can't possibly recreate a scene from Quake without the purple psychedelic skybox :P2

Awesome work )))

This is a background I drew a long time ago for a homebrew game I made. It's pretty old and not exactly my best work, but I decided to clean it up a bit and turn it into a KS gradient just for kicks:

I made a few "screen raindrops" COs in different sizes for an environmental level, but decided not to use them at the last minute. Feel free to use them in your rainy levels if you like this effect:
For best results, place these animations at layers 6-7, alternating between the two COs for each size.
-
A few tilesets I made for the Cursed Gallery (https://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6957.0) collab project, including the original (non-sunset) edition of the "Sandy Beach" set that wasn't used in the level. Feel free to use and/or remix them!
Also, I've replaced the Orange Grass ReImagined (https://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6830.msg72561#msg72561) tileset with a fixed version. Turns out one of the trees was missing a bunch of leaves due to me being dumb and forgetting to turn one of the layers back on in the editor
-
I converted the "happy ball" creature (Bank#14 Obj#12) into a KS+ custom character because reasons. I also made a blue version of it because other reasons. As always, feel free to use them in your levels and/or customize them in any way.
NOTE: Using this with the umbrella power-up is not recommended, since the default umbrella sprite will look like it's hovering over the character. I might post a suitable custom umbrella spritesheet later.
-
Yet another retro tileset (probably my last retro-style set for a while). This one is a port/remake/whatchamacallit of the graphics used in an old 16-color shareware DOS game called "Secret Agent", but all the tiles were redrawn from scratch by me in order to fit KS' 24x24 format.

Commander Juni 3: Juni Must Die!
-
Now that you mention it, this set also resembles the look of the first Commander Keen games to some degree. Good times 8)
Here's the actual game screen I used as a reference for my demo pic:
I think it'd be possible to port some of the levels from the original game to KS, especially by using KS+ OCOs to customize the enemies and traps.
Oh, and I forgot to mention this: feel free to edit the set and/or copy any of the tiles onto your own tilesets. The reason it doesn't say "KS Use/Edit OK" in the credits bar is simply because I ran out of space there :P2
-
Not to mention Duke Nukem 1 and 2, the games that came before Secret Agent. :) Or after... or whatever. :P
-
Heya folks! It's been quite a while since I last posted anything here. Time for some new
and exciting stuff.
A random tileset I made with absolutely no prior planning nor any art direction whatsoever, surprising no one. The clouds are made of white squares for some reason. I added the pears at the last minute. Pears are good for you. Maybe I should add them to the list of possible sequels to Tomatoes (https://nifflas.lp1.nl/index.php?topic=6615.0), right after lemons and celery...
Yet another CGA 4-color retro set I started some time ago but never used for anything. I went with the yellow-red-green palette this time. The background in the demo pic is a gradient I used previously in some of my retro-themed levels such as The Dithered Temple (https://nifflas.lp1.nl/index.php?topic=6953.0).
You'll find the actual tilesets below in the "attached files" area. As usual, feel free to use/remix them in your levels.
-
That CGA one is so good.
-
Glad you liked it. I have a weakness for the aesthetics of the original IBM PC era, even though it's not exactly everyone's cup of tea.
I also made a low-intensity version of the CGA tileset and a 16-color (EGA) version, because why not.
-
It's been some time since I last posted a gradient/background. Here's an oasis background that is actually some tropical beach landscape I didn't get to finish drawing before laziness kicked in:
[ Oasis - Original version (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ffdlcpfemabynwp/Oasis.png?dl=0) ]

[ Oasis - EGA 16 color version (https://www.dropbox.com/s/l9psg1ayso014ak/Oasis_Retro.png?dl=0) ]
-
I like the aesthetic of the landscape, the trees look nice. The EGA version is really a saturated one. What about a variant without the sun?
-
Ask and ye shall receive :) I added a link pointing to a "sunless" version of the gradient. Fortunately I kept everything related to the sun in a separate group of layers!
The EGA version is just something I made for kicks. I doubt it'll be actually used anywhere, except for maybe a similarly themed retro level featuring the same exact palette. But hey, you never know :P2
-
(https://vegetal.eb-creativos.com/ksstuff/sshot/birdmen_fortress_demo.png)
I was watching an LP of the DOS version of Prince of Persia 2 the other day (because I occasionally enjoy spending my time in very odd ways, what can I say) and that inspired me to create a new tileset based on the last main area of the game.
-
Oh! This is epic!
When I saw the screen I thought there must be some custom object that make the shadow effect. And it is much simpler than I thought. I was always like, how these screens could be put together, that must be some hardcore work to make it so visually appealing - that's why I always prefered simple design. But now I might try these more detailed ones.
-
Merry Christmas folks! It's a bit rushed and not much of a present, but here's a special holiday edition of the tileset I used in The Bluebird of Happiness (which also got a Halloween remix for my level Late to the Party... talk about recycling gifts! :P )
-
Once again, it's time to have this thread rise from its ashes. I bring you a new tileset in two different flavors: a retro-styled one using the good old EGA 16-color palette, and a more colorful (slightly less retro) remake.
Original EGA version (fixed 16-color palette)
Pseudo-VGA version with more color
As you can see, it is... well... very blue. If you are interested in an alternate set in any other color (red, green, purple...), let me know.
-
I've completely missed this thread, these are all so cool VG. Very inspiring thread to browse through :D
This last one is crazy good, especially with the sample screens. I love the window design, very creative and keeping with the theme. It of course feels very retro, but also fresh, haven't seen many tilesets like this for KS.
-
Thanks! Glad you like the stuff C) Feel free to use/mod anything you want from this thread.
Every time I start a new tileset, I also start building a test screen (the same ones I post here as samples) that I use to try out the new tiles as I draw them, and also to help me decide what else I should add to the set when I run out of ideas. Sometimes, this has the added benefit of giving me ideas for using my own tiles in ways different than I originally planned, which is actually what happened with those window frame thingies you see on the screenshot (at first, I simply intended for those to be placed on the ceiling as additional detail).
