Title: [Action/Adventure] The Underside.
Post by: ChaosWolf on August 05, 2009, 20:29:30
I'm not sure if this is allowed here. The game isn't finished but there is a fairly large demo you can play. This game is like Cave Story with a sense of humor.

Update: official site has changed, but the game is still unfinished. New download here:

Screenshots? And if there's a website/blog/etc. dedicated to it, please post a link.

EDIT: You managed to add the screenshots in between the time I started typing and the time I posted. XD

It looks alright but since it's a DEMO I just can't be bothered to try it until the full game is released.

LOL, you posted the one screen that's the exact same as Cave Story.  Before people start arguing about this, The Underside IS supposed to resemble Cave Story.  However nothing is ripped from it - Podunkian made what's in this game so far from scratch.  I love it so far, and was happy when I found out, the other day, that an extra-long preview had been released.  I'm glad it's posted on here now.  Can't wait 'til it's finished.

I don't think this game is ever going to be finished. I thought it was lost due to a hard drive crash.

The Underside blog thing is still active, and the latest preview was released at the end of June.

UNFORTUNATELY, I am playing games on an USB stick which is (GODDAMN) FULL!

In one of the previews, it shows melee weapons like chainsaws, and you can buy stuff from a store with those nickel-like things you collect. This is where the game differs from Cave Story, and frankly, I like that.

Also, take a freeze tablet Yonowaaru.

I like this game. I think the early parts are too derivative, but the gameplay gradually gets more original, until it's pretty fun and it's possible to play without the constant reminders of Cave Story et al. The dialogue and plot remain too much like a cheap pastiche of Earthbound/Mother 3, though.

(The beginning is really painfully CS-clone-like. The general aesthetic, the protagonist's design, his gun, the background that doesn't move as fast as the foreground, the spinning notebook for saving, etc.)

I guess I will try, since it competes with cave story. Will get back later...

I played it once. When I first started the game the intro got me very intrested and I thought it would be awesome but then it was weird and I deleted it.

You don't like that it's weird?  You're... WEIRD! :O

Stupid weird, I didn't like the humor and it wasn't serious.

Dude, the intro included someone wiping a big paintbrush over a flat piece of something in the middle of space, and then when that didn't turn out good, he simply flipped the same piece of something over and did it again. You really expected it to be serious?

Good point, you said the intro got you interested, but THEN it got weird?  Dude, the whole thing is weird.  Way to be inconsistent. X-P

I've never heard of that happening before!  :O

You should try posting about it on the forum (http://www.insignificantstudios.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=7).  Although the replies there are sometimes sporadic.

I can't download this, the link you posted just leads you to a squatter site.

Does anyone have a copy they could send to me?

Well, it's in development hell, with the creator making other games in his spare time.  If it does get completed, the time involved will probably be comparable to Starcraft 2 or Duke Nukem Forever (the latter of which I am still not sure about).

EDIT: Single-man game developers have a lot to deal with.  And the bigger the project, the longer it takes.  With one person, the time involved seems to increase exponentially with the scale of the project.

It goes to show, never bite off more than you can chew. I've found the best thing is to simply code what you like, and build on it with no set plan. The result ends up being much fun to play.

What if we got permission from the dev and started working on it on our own?

Looks like the old site was abandoned, so I updated links to the new official site. Thanks for the catch! :)
