Need input on Underwater Adventure problem...
« on: September 04, 2009, 19:20:08 »
I've run into a problem that might either be a glitch in my particular download, or something I'm not doing right.

Anyway, early on in the Underwater Adventure stage, you run into a room with 5 switches/buttons on the floor.

However, the puzzle's not the problem. My problem is, I can't seem to get out of that particular room once I fall down into it. When I use the double jump to try to get back onto the ledge on the right side, I can't seem to get on it. And there's also the room about 2 screens to the right (with the adjustable water levels) where you have to jump "up" to get to the "seeing eye" item at the top. Problem is, I can't seem to reach the room after adjusting the water to the highest level possible. I'd do the double-jump up and see the item but I'd just fall short of the ledge.

It's not my jumping technique either. I cleared the Machine level just fine and I checked all the other levels and I don't seem to be running into any "the ledge shouldn't be that high" problem.

I've checked online and even saw a youtube video of someone doing it, so it seems to be just me. Other people seem to have no problem double-jumping back out of the 5 button/switches pit, nor double jumping into the seeing eye room. Am I doing something wrong? Or is it a problem with my download?

Its terribly unlikely that you, and only you, got a data corruption when you downloaded the game, that did not make KS completely unplayable, but somehow changed the height of the double jump, and only that.
So yeah, I guess you are just doing it wrong. :/
Have you tried waiting until you reach the peak of the first jump before doing the second double jump?

You say that the puzzle isn't the problem, but actually the puzzle is the problem.

Good luck. :)

LPChip, a perfect analog to your response follows:

"Gosh, LPChip, I just can't seem to reach that shelf with the cream pie on it!"
"Obviously, Mr. Smith, the problem is that after you get the pie, you might have trouble eating it."

Although, honestly, I'm not sure what could be making this jump difficult.  It is an ordinary four-tile jump (or five-tile, or three-tile, depending on how exactly you look at it.  And the act of maximizing your jump height is hardly difficult - hold S until you reach the peak of your jump, then release it and immediately hold it again.  This is to say, jump as high as you can then double jump as high as you can.
Perhaps, as you say, your version of the level/game is somehow corrupted, and has made that jump impossible - but the probably of this happening is extremely, extremely low.

If I could maybe get it on video somehow but I don't think I have the means. And like I said, it isn't my jumping technique--I've cleared (as in finished) several other levels but somehow my jumping is off in this level? Come on. And I checked online several times to see if it was the puzzle. I even watched a youtube video of a guy starting the level from the beginning and getting to the point I was and passing it. I did everything he did. Difference is, his double jump is working properly and my isn't. Simple as that.

And LPChip, the problem isn't the door. I know it's supposed to be closed until I solve the button puzzle. It's the fact that i can't jump back out of the room to the right of the screen. And anyway, I can't get the seeing eye powerup because I can't jump high enough, remember?

Anyway, I'll just delete the game and reinstall the whole thing again and see if that fixes it. But this is really odd so I was wondering if this happened to anyone else. I guess not.

You are setting the water level to the highest for the eye right? That should give you the ability to reach it. As you'll have to jump to the next screen, make sure you hold the jump button long enough so you don't lose momentum on the next screen.

BTW, Are you playing the game from your hard-disk, or have you put the game on an USB stick? I ask this because using an USB stick will cause loading screens to be much slower, which could cause for you to loose momentum.

EDIT: I just loaded the level and played it again. You indeed need the eye to get more of the code. Without the eye, you can't even get to the screen with the last part of the code.

If you can get the eye, but not get to that room, read the spoiler:

EDIT2: You aren't using the umbrella are you? If so, it''ll slow you down, and you won't be able to reach that height!

Since when do you get the umbrella in that part of the level?  It doesn't appear until much, much later.

Also, while cruddy disk transfer rates/running under WINE/running from a USB stick will indeed make screen loading annoyingly slow, it will not alter the game's physics (though it may throw off your timing).

O_o Its appears in the beginning, down the starting screen

I'm not using the umbrella. I know it prevents you from getting peak height. I've tried everything. I have been however playing it off a USB so I'll try it on the computer hard drive and see what happens.

As for the water level, I set it as high as I could while still making the middle platform reachable.

As for how I'm jumping, I tried various things. Normally I just hold the jump button until I get to where I need to, but for this I tried everything--holding it longer, pressing the jump button again after the first leap, etc,. Jumping should be simple (and for the other levels it was) but I'm fairly sure something is going on with the way the game is running in the way I've set it up.

EDIT: Okay, I tried something else. I took the game on the USB and ran it on another computer. Voila. The jumps work. So my only guess is that the keyboard on the other computer I've been using has been somewhat wonky. Strange, that it affects only this level. I'll have to look into it. But I appreciated the various suggestions anyway guys.  :)

Great to hear that you got it working. :)

If you find out what causes this on your primary computer, let us know. Perhaps other people can have the same problem, so we can suggest the solution you given us.
