Development Showcase / [song] Fleeting Forest Lights
« on: April 20, 2014, 17:43:32 »
Inspired by this piece of artwork by "Zennore": http://zennore.deviantart.com/art/If-you-seek-349132671
I wrote this song: https://soundcloud.com/krichotomy/fleeting-forest-lights

My interpretation of Zennore's artwork was a nighttime forest with flying glowing jellyfish, and here (using mostly synthesized instruments and modified percussion samples) I tried to create a relevant soundscape. I imagined the jellyfish to often stop glowing, and thus vanish from sight, hence the title "Fleeting Forest Lights". But I imagined the jellyfish to grow to trust the human, leading to the entire forest illuminating with their glowing, hence the climaxing.

What is the genre? I guess it begins almost "ambient". But it becomes very melodic.

Development Showcase / Kritter's Digital Music
« on: August 23, 2012, 22:19:53 »
I created a Newgrounds account and uploaded a couple of digital compositions I recently made.

http://krichotomy.newgrounds.com/

Blizzard on the Ice Cap is a (surprise surprise) remix of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Ice Cap Zone Act 1 theme. I took a slow orchestral emotional approach.

Wilderness is an original composition with more energy in it. I don't really know what else to say about it. It is interesting.

I used Linux MultiMedia Studio on Lubuntu to make these. That software seems terribly buggy, about the same as my experience with Inkscape (for vector graphics). But it is free and it does work. Though sometimes I find myself having to use workarounds instead of the original sounds I had planned when the software bugs out with them. Good thing I prefer working under limitations than with an infinite palette.

Find more detailed descriptions on the song pages on Newgrounds.

Update: I've uploaded some more music now. Go to my Newgrounds page to see all of them, or my Soundcloud page to just see the best ones.  8) Or just open this spoiler for embeded Soundcloud thingies.

Other Free Games / [roguelike] Brogue
« on: April 07, 2012, 17:20:01 »
Type:
Casual or not-so-casual roguelike.

Description:
This is a fun roguelike for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It is easy to jump in and play for a few minutes, then jump out, then jump in another day and continue where left off. It is also involving enough to play for long periods. (Dwarf Fortress was really fun, but I found I had to immerse myself in the game over long periods of time to effectively play it, so I had to stop playing it.) Brogue has many items to discover, enemies to encounter, traps to fall into, gases to ignite... and in my opinion, the interface is very easy and the dungeon levels are rendered very nicely while maintaining traditional roguelike appeal. As expected, the entire game can be played with just the keyboard. Almost everything can be done with the mouse as well, should one fall victim to an irrational fear of keyboards. So what are you waiting for? Grab your staff of firebolt and blast the dry weeds that the band of kobolds are standing in. Eat a mango as you watch them incinerate. Take care that your flames do not boil the deep water, releasing scalding steam. Consume a potion of levitation and fly over the acid trap, then throw a potion of confusion at the goblin conjurer and hope he blindly steps into the lava. Free a monkey from captivity and gain a friendly ally. Drink potions of strength, then put on that heavy armor. Oh wait, was that armor cursed? Oh well. Drink a mysterious purple potion. Oh wait, was that a potion of paralysis? Is that a dart turret? Are those vampire bats? Are you dead? Yes, you are dead. Now start over and do it again.

Intense action/arcade 3D run-for-your-life!

Description:
Igneous is an amazing (and short) 3D actiony-arcadey game. You play as a "totem" thingy that is escaping the wrath of gods or something. The subterranean world around you falls apart. Huge stones burst through bridges as you cross them, tearing the path apart. The large download is worth every byte. Download and play it now.

Other Free Games / [Platformer] The Binding Force
« on: June 26, 2011, 05:17:43 »
The Binding Force

Type:
Platformer

Description:
Take the role of a dude with no visible arms in this charming platformer. Do whatever your platformer instinct tells you to do, and you'll find your way through this beautiful low pixel resolution world. This is actually just a demo (the game is not complete), and doesn't provide any plot line yet, but it's a pretty fun little game. I'm sure it's partly inspired by Cave Story. (Aren't they all? :P ) It's made with the Stencyl flash game making system, which may be worth checking out.

Other Free Games / [Action] Starfall: Alyssa's Adventure
« on: July 16, 2010, 21:36:02 »
Type:
Action

Description:
"Starfall: Alyssa's Adventure is a third-person platformer, where you play as Alyssa on a mission to return fallen stars to the sky. Along the way, she gains three powerful abilities: a mid-air jump, the ability to create a platform below her, and a powerful dash. Alyssa must use her newfound abilities to traverse obstacles to reach her goal atop a treacherous tower."
This game is very similar in feel to Nifflas's games, with a beautiful, serene, yet not entirely friendly world. The main difference is that it's 3D. If you like the atmosphere of Niff games, then I heartily recommend you try this out. If you don't like them, then try it out anyway.  XD

Other Free Games / [Action/Puzzle] Lode Runner Online
« on: June 17, 2010, 06:24:35 »
Type:
Action/Puzzle

Description:
The first computer my parents ever bought came with a spectacular computer game: Sierra's "Lode Runner: The Legend Returns". The game is based off of an older game (Lode Runner). Dig, blast, and jackhammer your way through over a hundred levels of gathering gold and avoiding the evil red "Mad Monks". Some levels keep you on your toes, others require you to stop and think for a while, if not both. Having long lost the game files, I was excited to discover "Lode Runner Online" released for free. "Lode Runner Online" is the same game, but has the additional ability for two players to play together over a network. (The game already has the ability for two players to play on the same computer.)
I find the levels innovative and intriguing, and the cutscenes are sometimes hilarious. After defeating the game and all the two-player cooperative levels, me and my brother made levels where we could try to blow each other up.
Unfortunately, the download does not come with the game music. The music added nicely to the game. So just have your mp3 player going.  ;) I used to have the original music files on a floppy disk... I wonder if it's still buried somewhere at home...

Other Free Games / [Adventure] Froggle
« on: June 08, 2010, 16:20:02 »
Type:
Adventure

Description:
The protagonist wakes up one morning and realizes his Froggle license has expired! Control a small frog-like creature as he swings through tests and beautiful environments working to renew his license. The administrator will stop at nothing to get a day off, so be on your toes, or you may never complete the tests! Developed by students of DigiPen university, Froggle is a small work of art, and I would love to see a sequel with more environments.  :D EDIT: There are no plans for a sequel.
A little tip: This game does not save progress. However, if you start the game up and don't want to repeat the preliminary tests, press escape and choose "Return to World Map." That allows you to continue directly to Tests 1, 2, and 3. And don't get so wrapped up in the tests that you forget to explore the world!

Other Free Games / [Action/RPG] Guardian of Paradise
« on: June 08, 2010, 05:58:44 »
Type:
Action/RPG

Description:
Guardian of Paradise is a game developed by Buster (who also developed "Akuji the Demon".). You take the role of Tela who begins on a quest to cure his ill sister. Five realms full of a variety of adversaries, puzzles, and beautiful graphics separate Tela from the place known as "Paradise," where healing waters are find.
I actually didn't like this game when I first started playing it a year ago. I found it... didn't feel right. But earlier this year, I picked it back up and was soon drawn in. The graphics are amazing! From the terraform to the enemies to the "spash screens," the artwork is amazing! The music is all midi, but I find it all very fitting to the game and enjoyable. The game is based around a unique system of "spirits" you must rescue and utilize cunningly to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. 4.9 / 5 stars!  8)

Other Free Games / [Puzzle] Grow Tower
« on: August 07, 2009, 06:51:40 »
Type: Puzzle

Description: You build a tower by choosing the order that certain parts are placed on it. There is only one combination that will win the game. Different combinations/orders grow the tower differently, and it's quite amusing to see all the different ways the sections interact. Especially when you get the winning combination.  8) Also check out the other grow games on the same website (eyemaze.com). There are no "levels" to this game.
