Title: [Environmental] Concealment
Post by: yohji on November 09, 2010, 21:28:59
As some of you may have already noticed, I've started expanding Moonlight - http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2152.0 - reworking the existing level and adding more areas and ideas. I'm happy to say there's considerable progress, and I really hope I'll be able to release the level before the year's end. Here are a couple of screens, two areas out of the projected three or four.

Your levels are a little too weird for me sometimes, but I have to say, "No one makes default tilesets look fresh quite like you."

Thank you   :) I've been trying to make a "normal" level since a long time ago, but somehow I always start getting ideas that fascinate me and just have to get implemented... and they usually make the level weird. Maybe I'll nail it one day.

Ahhh... this looks nice.  :D  I for one like your weirdness.  When a story can break the box in a way that makes the box unnecessary, I'm pretty happy.  Granted, that is not always easy to do.

Weird... but cool. I especially like the trees, and the black things look like graphite or charcoal finger-marks on a sheet. I love it too when I find unexpected uses to old or "normal" tiles!

Thank you both :) I hope you'll enjoy the finished level.

I don't really like the visual style you put in your levels, although, like egomassive said, it is definitely original. It just looks too jarring and clipped-off for me to appreciate. :/

Eh, maybe we will eventually complete Seventeen (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=3483.0) with Egomassive and then I'll have one normal-looking level to my credit. (Speaking of which, I notice the mods deleted the link to the demo  :()

I really love the "Nifflas goes antialiased" tileset. I don't think it gets nearly the use it deserves -- though this is understandable, because it is incompatible with most other tilesets. You have a very odd style, but I loved Moonlight and this is looking great as well!

Progress report: out of four areas (one of which is secret), two are completed and two are 30-60% complete. I may add a second secret area, but I'm not sure about that. Work is going extremely well, I'm very pleased with how things are looking.

One of the areas features the return of a once-famous, yet rarely used (?) tileset. I don't want to spoil a small level with too many screenshots, so here's the (admittedly abstract) plot instead. You find yourself in the Exit World - an abandoned man-made archipelago. The Concealment is a link between worlds, which you have to navigate while the demons are away, in order to get to the eternal Garden. Neither The Concealment nor the Garden are what they seem, and while the mystery of the Garden may be revealed to you in the end, the true nature of The Concealment will remain hidden.

AAAAhhhhh...  I so love abstract and fantastic plots.  Such plots are like soothing balm to my brain... or crack cocaine, it's hard to tell sometimes.

Progress report: blah, not much progress. Hit a dead end working on the remaining two areas, which are kind of.. 50% complete each. Difficult to explain the problems without showing screenshots, and I can't do that. Also, my perfectionism kicked in and I no longer like the size of the level and some of the major decisions, etc. Meh. Sorry! I still hope to finish it until December 31st though.

Don't worry about apologising, you can only work at your own pace. Still looking forward to it, as and when you get it done. Just don't get disheartened  :)

Just keep on dancing man.  Tappedy tap tap, tappedy tap tap...  (Have no idea where that came from  )

Progress report: the recent small surge of activity at the KS boards here inspired me, I guess; I finished one of the remaining areas. Now all that remains is some 35%-50% of one last area, minor technical details, and maybe music if I can make something that fits. Definitely going to complete the level this month.

Very cool!  I'm looking forward to this.  :)

Yeah, ks board activity is always inspiring, but I think I've decided to not do level previews until my levels are at least 60% done.

The level is 99% complete. I now need two beta-testers who wouldn't mind playing an odd, surreal environmental level with no challenges, no explanation of the plot, etc. Anyone interested?  ;)

I'm not brilliant at testing but I'm willing to have a shot at it if I'd be any help  :)

Progress report: the level is not abandoned, but the changes Headgrinder suggested are taking time to implement. A lot of unpleasant RL stuff came up recently. Unfortunately, right now I have no idea when I can finish this; things look kind of grim, so it may take a long time. I thought maybe I could release the current version (fully playable) and maybe delay the expanded one a bit. Not really sure about this, though.

Whatever you think best, of course. I hope your RL takes a turn for the better as soon as possible. All my best wishes for whatever you're having to deal with.

Thank you! I have some time today to work on the level, so I've added a couple of screens and some text to explain directions (eh.)

Found a bit more time today too. Here are a couple of screenshots of areas that weren't shown before. One is from a new area, started today.

Bad news, I just started recovering from a rather horrible flu, so I haven't done any work at all in these past couple of weeks. Good news, since I'm still recovering, work doesn't start till next week, so I might get time to work on this and hopefully finish it this week. At least that's what I want to do.

2 Week flu =  :ohnoes:

Work not until next week = :D

I'm so sorry to hear you've been ill. I hope you're not feeling too bad still, I'm always shattered for about a week following just a cold.

Thank you. I just have a cough that won't go away, but everything else seems to be OK now...  8)

I had a bad 24 hour bug a month back, but it really didn't leave me any capacity to get ks work done.  I'm glad you feel up to it.

I've released v1.0: http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=4627.0

My apologies to my beta-testers - I wish I could send you this version and ask for opinions, but real life is really, really busy right now; I'm in the middle of moving, I can't even really work on my own computer and have to use someone else's, and I have absolutely no idea if I can work on the level further during the next few months. I wanted to release what I had, since the level is playable. The only differences from the version you guys played are (a) there's a title screen now and a couple of screens "explaining" the plot, and (b) there are a couple of signs "explaining" the ghost lights. I really hope you're not mad at me, I just couldn't find any time to send individual letters, wait for replies, etc. - I'm very, very sorry!   :(

Also, the extra area that I posted a bit earlier didn't make it into v1.0. I hope to eventually finish it and release an updated version.

You've nothing to apologise for, don't be silly  ;)

It's looking really good. The intro and signs help it to feel finished and it was always a fascinating level.

I felt I should tell you that trying out this room (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=4287.0;attach=5447;image) using the editor has inspired me to create a whole level that barely resembles yours at all. It should be done soon, if everything goes to plan.

It's terrific to hear, thanks for telling me! Always great to know my stuff inspired somebody else :)
