Creativity Support / Re: Custom Tilesets
« on: April 16, 2009, 23:32:10 »
Err

:/

I mean, that black one in the top left still works like a transparent tile, but appears black in the viewer.

The other stuff there with black background is transparent in Paint.NET, but appears comepletely black...

I'm going to try the whole magenta thing, forgot about that.

EDIT: Hmm, crap. Now it says 'fully transparent tiles were found'
EDIT 2: Actually, I'm probably being stupid and have just thought about why that's happening and am going to fix it.
EDIT 3: Fixed, feel free to ignore me now :)

/fixes own problems

I'm using Paint.NET at the moment. I've copied tileset 0 and saved a copy and am using that to edit. The 'transparent' square that's there from the start works sort of right, expect it's completely black in the viewer, but I've been using the eraser to make a tile with a transparent background but that simply appears black in the tileset viewer and black in the screen when I place the tile?

Knytt Stories Level Editing Support / Re: Serious Warp problemo
« on: April 13, 2009, 16:20:59 »
It took me ages to realise that warps happened after the initial screen switch. First warp I used a wanted to move 2 screens right rather than the usual 1, and put x=2 instead of x=1 :/ Took me ages to realise what I'd done wrong.

OK, level is done apart from a few graphical touch ups required, and a few cutscenes/an ending (apologies if the story seems like an afterthought... because it was).

I imagine due to some bits (especially close to the end) it'll be Hard or Very Hard. Looking for 3 testers, in any case.

5
Looking forward to trying this, been following your thread for a bit. Glad you didn't give up on it.

6
Love the minimalist styling on the bottom screen there :D

7
I might do a separate 'easy' version of the map with one or two sections toned down a bit. I was just testing a jump which I thought impossible, but started getting closer and closer with some creative umbrella use...

8
Don't suppose anyone would be interested in giving this a test run when It's finished in a week or two? (Or three...)

Copy the EditorSettings.temp file in the \Worlds folder in the zip into your \Worlds folder

Gotcha, thanks.

Hmm, how do I get the test level thing working properly exactly?

Looks good, despite being a bit unoriginal  :/
Great use of the basic tilesets. You have a good eye for layout, now just add more "new" to it  :^^:

I'm sticking with stock tilesets for now, maybe when I make another map I'll start trying to make custom ones, though I don't really know where to start when it comes to that kind of stuff. I am trying to come up with unique stuff, mind... trying. :) It's difficult to come up with unique visuals using the standard tilesets though... I'd rather just use what's there fairly well for now. I hope at least one of the puzzles will be new to people :D

I like the waterfall in the first screenshot - combining two colours there is quite a simple idea which I, nevertheless, haven't seen in any level yet (I think). The other screenies do look a little empty, in fact, especially the second one (although, ironically, with this one, that might just be what you're aiming for) but some people prefer building the basics first and adding eye candy later ;) I'm working on my first level at the moment as well so I know the problem, I find it hard to get a feeling for what is too little or too much decoration. I suppose that comes with experience - hopefully you're learning faster than I seem to X-P

Yeah, the area in the second screenshot is supposed to be pretty minimal by design. The others will probably get more background stuff added later, and some more object based effects too :)

It looks awfully plain, to be honest; still, we'll see how it turns out.

It is my first level so it's 50% a learning experience for me. I definitely intend to go back to the stuff I built before to make them look prettier though.

This will be my first ever Knytt Stories map. Go me, I guess.

I want it to be reasonably puzzling/difficult - aiming for the 'hard' slot but it could become 'very hard.' But more importantly it'll always be fair and skill based, no blind luck in this.

The gameplay flow will be fairly simple - you'll have most areas closed off at the start, and as you visit new areas and gain new powers you can reach more and more areas. For example, the level starts easily, as you look for the run powerup, which lets you cross one gap, then grab the climb powerup which allows you to reach an area back near the start. After that things start to get a bit more challenging.

Images?

Thanks guys, I got it in the end. I then decided to use a shift anyway

I'll make use of this stuff later on in my level I think. I don't suppose there's a way you can copy screens en masse is there? I noticed that for multi-difficulty levels it's basically a shift that switches between an easy/hard version of a map. Was that done by cloning screens as you go, or doing the whole lot afterwards?

LPChip - I'll keep that in mind for the inevitable next time I get stuck. Or I could just use this thread instead.
