Calling all Knytt Stories Players! Welcome to the first ever Play Knytt Stories contest!

First, allow me to introduce an all-new level by the one and only Vegetal Gibber, Ruins of EGA-Lana. This level has everything... EGA graphics, Easy, Hard, and Lunatic modes, collectible artifacts, and tantalizing hidden secrets! This level will be released on November 12th, 2021, at 12:00AM GMT. I would like to thank Vegetal Gibber for co-sponsoring this contest, providing this exceptional level as the competition setting.

Level is now live! Get it here: https://nifflas.lp1.nl/index.php?topic=7297.0

This contest has three separate categories, to appeal to any player. This means there will be at least THREE unique winners! You don't need a screen capture program to participate, you don't need to be the fastest player, in fact you don't need to necessarily even complete the level at all! Contest period will be from November 12th, 2021 12:00AM GMT to January 12th, 2022 12:00AM. Players may participate in every category, but can only receive one award. EDIT: Submissions are now closed.

Category 1: Non-traditional SpeedRun of Ruins of EGA -Lana Hard mode. Post or stream a speedrun video of Ruins of EGA-Lana Hard mode and link it in this thread, on the Official Nifflas Discord, on the Don Doli Discord, or PM me in some other fashion. Wallswims and OOBs are allowed, though cheating is not. The fastest time wins. Time will be scored from the moment the player enters the Hard area to the moment they re-enter the menu screen reach the credits. Each artifact collected will be counted as -10s. Prize is a $15 Steam Gift Card!*

Current Speedruns are being informally tracked here: http://www.ksruns.com/level/lana

Category 2: Completionist run of Ruins of EGA-Lana Lunatic mode. Post or stream a video completing Ruins of EGA-Lana Lunatic mode AND collecting all artifacts, and link it in this thread, on the Official Nifflas Discord, on the Don Doli Discord, or PM me in some other fashion. No wallswims, OOBs, or cheats allowed. The First player to upload or stream a complete run video wins! Prize is a $15 Steam Gift Card!*

Category 3: Creative run of Ruins of EGA-Lana. Post to this thread or Nifflas Discord a unique and creative "playthrough" of Ruins of EGA-Lana, any mode, including Easy. It does not have to be a complete playthrough, and can involve as many or as few screens as you wish. (e.g. a video narrating Juni's EGA-Lana adventure; a slideshow storybook of EGA-Lana; a crayon picture of Juni in EGA-Lana). EDIT: In lieu of holding a vote, VG and I will be judging the entries ourselves. The winner will get a $15 Steam Gift Card!*

BONUS: ANY player who completes True Lunatic mode (not to be confused with regular Lunatic mode) with no exploits, cheats, or glitches, and posts a video of it during the contest period will receive a $10 Steam gift card* AND be added to the Hall of Fame; Vegetal Gibber will add their name, a brief quote, and a unique statue to the FINAL release of the level! Players CAN absolutely win the bonus prize in addition to any other contest!

The Official Winners for all contests have been announced here: https://nifflas.lp1.nl/index.php?topic=7296.msg75854#msg75854

--FAQ--

Q: Does True Lunatic Mode have to be completed in one sitting to be eligible for prizes?
A: No, this can be completed across multiple sittings. However, the entire playthrough must be streamed, or recorded and spliced as one playthrough video. Any evidence of video tampering, cheat use, cheat-saving, save file editing, or level editing, may result in disqualification from all skill-based contests.

Q: Can I use the level editor to view Ruins of EGA-Lana for practice and strategy purposes?
A: Yes, you may, however, please do so off-camera, or in dedicated practice and analysis videos. Any evidence of level editing or tampering in a submitted run, even purely aesthetic or accidental level changes, may result in disqualification from all skill-based contests.

Q: Can I view other runs in order to strategize and optimize my own?
A: Yes, absolutely! The purpose of this contest is to foster growth in the KS community, so we not only allow but encourage sharing runs, watching other streams, and discussing strategies.

Feel free to post any questions below, and good luck!

Fine print:
- *Or a comparable prize of the winner's choice, subject to complete discretion by pfrangip. Steam gift cards have a three day waiting period.
- Amounts in US dollars. I have no idea how many kronenbergs that is.
- In the event of winners in multiple categories, or ties, prizes will be awarded according to the sole discretion of pfrangip.
- VG and pfrangip may compete for sport, but they are ineligible from receiving any prizes. I really would love to see VG beat True Lunatic mode.
- The level was released 1 hour earlier than originally planned. If anyone feels like the one hour early posting has adversely impacted their ability to compete in Category 2, please compete as normal, PM me, and I will review cases as necessary.

In honor of Purple Ink's Un-epic Level Contest, I have created One Epic Screen. This level was inspired by Purple Pineapple's One Screen Puzzle 4. I hope this experience will be a little more relaxing than its inspiration, gently guiding players to push KS mechanics in order to progress.

Level can be found here! Enjoy and thank you for playing!

Per the contest requirements, this level does NOT require any mods to play and works just fine with the original KS.

Knytt Stories / Halloween Themed Levels
« on: October 28, 2020, 03:05:56 »
Hello!

Don Doli recently asked for some Halloween themed levels, and I thought I would also post my list here for anyone else looking for scary/creepy/cute Halloween themed levels. I've put a short description as well as a rating. Feel free to post any others!

House Key(Healy): I dead the outside
[Easy][Tiny][Environmental]
(Rated G) Any fan of the macabre needs to try this disconcerting little level.

Race to the Pumpkin Patch (Healy): Can you make it to the Pumpkin Patch?
[Hard][Small][Challenge]
(Rated G) Juni must escape the monsters and reach the Pumpkin Patch.
This short level is cute and maybe a little intense for new players. The environment is solid and well put together, the tilesets work well, the music is fun, and even the path that the player takes has them revisiting screens in different areas. It all works together well.

Dark House(Healy): Hey, who turned off the lights?
[Easy][Tiny][Misc/Maze]
(Rated G) This tiny environmental level by Healy is a bit spooky even if you're never in any real danger.

What Happened Next (ixMarcel & Fubaka): A save-the-world adventure
[Normal][Medium][Challenge/Misc]
(Rated PG-13) Juni must come to terms with her past by putting together the pieces.
This level truly is an experience, and only for seasoned Knytt Story veterans.

The Outsider (Alamaster Moody): Based on HP Lovecraft's story The Outside
[Easy][Small][Challenge]
(Rated PG) This small level isn't particularly well polished but it does tell a unique story.

The Cursed House(Ania): Can you escape from The Cursed House?
[Easy][Small][Challenge]
(Rated G) This fun little level has the player solving platformer puzzles in locals such as inside a freezer or a fireplace. It's a fun twist on the classic haunted house.

It Waits(Eric Colossal): For Longer Than You Know
[Hard][Medium]
(Rated PG) Juni makes her way through the belly of the beast in this classic Knytt Story. It's vaguely Lovecraftian, has some tough platformer jumps, and a unique atmosphere.

Blue House (Grimwit): Level Contest Entry about ghosts. v1.0
[Hard][Challenge][Medium]
(Rated G) This classic Haunted House level has Juni escaping from ghosts and running through invisble passages in the walls.

Caged In (James Vaughan): Can you get out?
[Lunatic][Challenge][Small]
(Rated PG-13) This challenge level is extremely goth and dark, with some mature themes.

An Evening Stroll (Pentavo Mapmaker): Go for a walk late in the evening.
[Lunatic][Large][Challenge]
(Rated R) This level features a lot of gory scenery and scary situations. It's also insanely difficult to get to the proper ending.

The Five Minute Hallway (pfrangip): A New Hallway in Juni's House
[Normal][Small][Maze/Challenge]
(Rated G) This maze by yours truly is based on an excellent horror novel by Mark Z Danielewski.

Curse of the Catacombs (Vegetal Gibber): Will you choose freedom or truth...?
[Easy][Small][Challenge]
(Rated PG) This level by Vegetal Gibber uses some excellent custom artwork to create a unique experience.

Late to the party (Vegetal Gibber): A short Halloween adventure
[Normal][Small][Challenge]
(Rated PG) This quintessential Halloween level is both fun and creepy.

The Little Gothic Doll (Velvet): You are a doll no one wants to buy...
[Normal][Medium][Challenge]
(Rated PG) This creepy and somewhat depressing little level is nonetheless a classic.

Choice (TigerNDV)
[Normal][Large][Challenge]
(Rated PG-13) This level has very little platforming but a lot of dialogue choices and options. Near the end there is quite a bit of horror.

Knytt Stories / PF's Challenge Level Reviews
« on: June 12, 2020, 15:19:29 »
Hello! A while back, when the world first entered shutdown due to COVID-19, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands. In my infinite boredom, and headaches from having two screaming toddlers, I decided to fight Headache with Headache and play every Lunatic Level in my cache of levels.

Because these are Challenge Levels, the criteria I'm assessing is based almost entirely on the skill-based challenges and puzzles, while artistic-driven criteria have taken a back seat and are summed up under the final bullet.
Difficulty - How difficult is this level to complete? How much player skill is necessary to complete all challenges? In general, true Lunatic levels score 5 or higher where higher scores are more difficult. This is not always a good thing! Preference for difficulty will vary player-to-player.
Fairness - How many random elements does this level utilize to become difficult? Are there adequate save points? How dependent are challenges on player skill, compared to luck? How many surprise hazards are there?
Fun-factor - Was the level enjoyable to play? Were the challenges satisfying? Did challenges feel unique and well-designed?
Quality - How did all of the other elements of the level come together? (E.G. Story, art, music, level design)

Scores are visible here, under the format: <Difficulty/Fairness/Fun-Factor/Quality> while full written reviews are linked below.

Hello! I am using KS+ and I would like a trigger or shift to modify a save location WITHOUT instantly teleporting the character there. Is there any way to do such a thing?

I would like to shift Juni from Screen A to Screen B, while setting her Save Location to Screen C. Anyway to do that?

Knytt Stories / Hilda - Knytt Stories-esque Netflix Series
« on: October 12, 2018, 17:50:12 »
I am still on my hiatus with my (now two) children, but recently a series came out on Netflix called Hilda.

I was immediately reminded of classic Knytt Stories levels. I mean if you were to make a Netflix about Juni, it probably wouldn't look too dissimilar from the first couple of episodes of Hilda. Highly suggest giving it a watch.

Uurnog / Challenge [Medium] Vault Ending with 1 Door
« on: April 01, 2017, 23:47:29 »
I came up with this challenge while playing around working on Pie_Snipers Two-Door Challenge. His is more difficult, because of a special caveat, which I will detail below.

I found it is indeed possible to get the Vault Ending by unlocking only one single locked door. (Other doors may be used as normal.)

No cheat or developer mode.

Knytt Stories / Knytt Stories Trailer?
« on: May 30, 2016, 19:20:41 »
Does there exist a Knytt Stories Trailer? I haven't seen one, and I've looked around. If there isn't, I'm considering making one. I often want to show friends what it is and there's not a definitive video.

Morning Stroll was created by Ultigonio and myself for the Knytt Swapsies competition at Glorious Trainwrecks.

We're quite proud of this one, so give it a shot if you haven't already!

Back in January, my home of Virginia had quite a few snowy days. Consequently, I was inspired to make The Snow Day. It was partially inspired by Raymond Briggs' The Snowman.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / [Small/Challenge/Scenic] Hinterland
« on: January 15, 2016, 23:56:24 »
This level was designed quickly, in a stream-of-consciousness fashion, while listening to a song my brother made called Hinterland.

There's a little story in my head about what's going on, but it's quite vague, and left well open to interpretation.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / [Misc][Small] Small Containment Problem
« on: December 19, 2015, 16:23:22 »
Hello all!

So I'm also a member of a creative writing site called SCP Foundation. It started as creepy works only, but eventually evolved into general paranormal/weird/interesting/sci-fi/creative works.  8)

Well, around Christmas Time they do a "Secret Santa" where someone does something creative for another randomly-chosen SCP member. Most people do Fanfiction or Artwork, I decided to do a Knytt Stories level! (Hopefully he's not also a member of this site  :^^: )

I had to make it easy so that anyone unfamiliar with KS would still be able to enjoy it. Having said that, I had my wife playtest it, and she knows very little about SCP or Knytt, and she liked it, so I believe anyone should be able to enjoy it.  :)

EDIT: This level has SCP-2660,SCP-2548, and cameos by SCP-1981 and SCP-1193.

Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

You can get the level here. (I used my SCP username, ABETTIK, as my author name for this one.)

As part of Glorious Trainwrecks' Knytt of The Month Klub #9 Challenge: Make a Level in 2 Hours, I created The Five Minute Hallway.

It's definitely not pretty. It's probably not even fun. It was more of an exercise in some Knytt Mechanics I hadn't used before. But if you like maze-like levels, or gloomy things, or (Mark z. Danielewski's House of Leaves) you might enjoy it.

Direct download to version 2 of the level.

WARNING: There are two endings, and both are difficult to find.

Thank you!

EDIT: I've made some minor changes and released a version 2.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / [Small/Environmental] Juni's Zoo
« on: August 09, 2015, 06:36:11 »
Today I took a break from my larger project and made Juni's Zoo. That makes this my second official level!

Even if you're not normally a fan of Zoo levels, you might enjoy this one.

EDIT: This was inspired by some of the other tiny levels that have come out recently by Healy, namely House Key and At the Zoo.
