Title: can't get fourth item in chapter 1 to get to the fairies

I can't get the 4th item the guy wants for him to give me a stone to give to the girl to go see the fairies. There's an item way up on the right in a big empty room that I have to pass 3 jumping robots. There's a hole on the roof of the room but I can't get to the room above it. There's a hole on the left that I probably need to come out of but I can't get to that level, nor will the blue light from the left curved room keep with me long enough even if I could. I've doubled back to the beginning twice and gone everywhere I can possibly get to spending about 4 hours now on this game.

Spoiler: the blue light works (click to show/hide)

The blue light will take you all the way to the artifact. Just activate it in the upper part of the 'left curved room' where you found it, and let it take you as far as it can (ie. don't cancel it out manually). You'll land a short climb away from the artifact.

Thank you very very very very very very much. Doesn't bode well for me the rest of the game though, does it?

That depends. If you didn't learn from the mistake here, maybe no. But I bet it sparked your creative thinking so next time you're stuck, you will try something similar to as what you did here. :)

Yeah, no worries there. :) Sometimes it just takes a while to get used to a game's logic.
