Knytt Underground / Time for a sequel? ;)
« on: February 24, 2016, 08:24:05 »
KU has probably been Nifflas' most popular and successful game, I think. When can we expect a sequel? :P

I'd love to get lost in another huge freely-explorable 2D world, maybe with realistic physics this time. :)

Ever since Maniac Mansion on the Commodore 64 and then Sierra's King's Quest series I've always felt that point-&-click adventures were the best medium for storytelling in games.

Nowadays people of course believe 3D games like Skyrim, The Witcher, Amnesia, and MMORPGs like World of Warcraft are the best way to explore a world and experience a story...

BUT when I played Knytt Underground I was amazed at how much could be done with a simple 2D platformer. The music and scenery drew me in as well as the best of the best 3D games, and the freedom of movement in varied environments created the feeling of being in a realistic world.

Best of all, it's something a solo indie developer can make on their own.

I'm curious if any other devs here feel the same. Which game genre gives you the most freedom to express the kind of world you want? Has Nifflas inspired you to try creating a adventure-platformer of your own? ;)

Hi everyone, I don't have a game to show per se just an idea I'm throwing out for whoever wants to use it. Nifflas inspires me like no other developer, and while I learn programming to make my own games I thought I'd share an idea that I've had for a while, so that someone more experienced may use it for themselves if they like.  :)

Premise/Story

:juni: Mimi* is a young witch-in-training (think someone cute like Kiki's Delivery Service.) She's sort of clumsy but well-meaning and cheerful, and she is set on passing the Witches Exam this year so she can finally take part in All Hollow's Eve.

For her first test she had to summon a Familiar, like a cat or a bat or even a toad, as all the other witches have. But of course she couldn't do it properly and instead ends up giving life to a sarcastic jack o' lantern. :w9:

This is where the game begins, as Mimi and her pumpkin Pumpum* start working together to finish the rest of the trials in the Witches Exam.

* Tentative names

Gameplay

The game is going to be exactly like Knytt Underground, with inspiration from the classic C64 game Cauldron (which could be considered the precursor to WaDF-style games) along with some key differences:

  • Mimi and Pumpum are separate characters: Instead of the hero turning into a ball like KU, the player has to move them separately, by switching control between them with TAB or something.

  • As in KU, Mimi can climb walls and Pumpum can bounce around. Neither can swim but Mimi can cast spells to let her walk on water. Later in the game, Mimi will also get the ability to glide on her broom.

  • No inventory: Instead of item-collecting quests this game will focus on solving puzzles through realistic physics, like Limbo. Mimi and Pumpum will have to push around boulders, knock over trees, or throw down ropes and so on to help each other cross various obstacles. They'll often be in different screens of the map for most of the game.

  • Mimi will gain various magic spells after completing each quest/chapter. These will include the ability to walk on water, making her broom fly, or turning Pumpum into different forms (like a cat) so he can enter specific areas. So basically these will be the Metroidvania element of the game.

SO! How does it sound? Maybe this can be made easily in Clickteam Fusion by modifying WaDF/Knytt source code (if it's available.) I really love Knytt-style games and one day I'll definitely attempt to make this, if no one else does by then. :)

Saira / Can we get a native Mac version, pretty please?
« on: September 21, 2014, 21:09:13 »
So far I've been able to enjoy all of Nifflas' games in Mac OS X via the very handy CrossOver app, but Saira is buggy :(

The biggest problem is that the photos are not viewable, because they get saved as solid black BMP files, and it's hampering my ability to continue the wiki entry. :P

This looks like one of Nifflas' best games and it'd be great if you could press a button in Clickteam Fusion and make a Mac binary for it. Is that possible?

BTW here's a little guide on the options available if anyone else wants to play on Mac or Linux

I've always felt that a game like KU with so many characters, quests and secrets, as well as the extended universe it shares with other Nifflas games, deserved a proper wiki. So I made one!

:hiddenstar: Here it is. :hiddenstar:

I'm still copying over stuff from Wikipedia for now and will be updating it with what I know. It's gonna need your help to make sure it has an entry for every game feature and lore element. Later I plan to add the maps and guides that I have.

It's free to edit so please head on over and flesh out the entires for your favorite things from KU! If you're an admin on this forum or need special access please PM me.

About Nifflas' Website and Forum / I created a wiki!
« on: August 28, 2014, 01:47:32 »
So I went ahead and took the liberty of starting a wiki on Wikia: nifflas.wikia.com

I've never maintained a wiki before and am completely new to this but while I'm learning I hope you guys can come over and help build it up! To start with I'm just copying the Wikipedia articles over, for now. Hopefully we can make it into an exhaustive list of all the games, related projects, soundtracks that Nifflas and his co-conspirators have worked on, as well as a complete resource for all the characters, quests and the lore of the combined WADF+Knytt universe.

If you're an admin on this forum please send me a PM and I'll add you to the admins for the wiki if needed!

I didn't see an "Ask Nifflas" forum so I'm just going to post this here:

  • Which of your own games do you enjoy playing the most?
  • What's your favorite genre? (of games)
  • Is there a genre you're fed up of working on by now, or want to take a break from? (for example 2D platformers)
  • Is there a game or type of game that you'd love to make, but haven't been able to?
  • Is there a Twitter where we can bug you with these kind of questions?

- just a curious fan :katt:

Is the list at nifflas.ni2.se complete? Also, can someone please update the Wikipedia page for Nicklas Nygren with a comprehensive list of all the games Nifflas has made or worked on so far?

I'd love to try out everything made by this guy, D Fast, LPChip, and all the others who worked on Knytt Underground.

An all-in-one compilation of all your games in a single download, as a Humble Bundle or some other pay-what-you-want package, would be one of the best things ever.  :)

That is all.

Thank you, D Fast!

My other favorite tracks from KU are "Please Exist, I'd Appreciate It" and "The Fairy Springs," which play back-to-back near the end of Chapter 1. I wish iTunes let us rate more than 5 stars to a song.. It's music like this that just makes you feel glad to be alive. <3

Again, thanks to everyone involved for such a beautiful game.

While the single-screen view works great in Knytt Underground and lets adjacent locations have a distinct look and feel, continuous scrolling (as in Terraria) would give a better sense of exploration and scope of a huge world, specially if you added some parallax effects for a sense of depth with multiple layers of those gorgeous photorealistic backgrounds. ;)

Is the flick-screen a conscious design choice that you're going to use in all of your games, or was it more a result of saving development time and map editing costs?

OPINION UPDATED! - Played the game a second time through in a different way and most of this post doesn't apply anymore, especially the complaints.

I just finished Knytt Underground on the Vita (which is the best port IMO, thanks to the convenient controls and nice little features like moving the background scenery with the rear touch panel.) :)

The best quality of this game is the exploration of that serene underground world and its mystery, complemented by the beautiful music. So many thanks for making a vast environment like that! It's a perfect game to relax with.

Now the complaints... (SPOILER ALERT!)

Spoiler: (click to show/hide)

:rosa: Some requests and suggestions...

The Underground world and its sci-fi + fantasy history has a LOT of potential. I LOVED all those nameless little types of creatures in the background. <3

You could do a lot with that setting! Please let us return to that world in your next game, and preferably make it less arcade/puzzle-like but more about adventure and discovery, and hopefully with a more serious epic story.

P.S. Please try to update the Vita version!

(wow the "msg" number for this post is 66666! Do I win anything?)
