Title: [Platformer] Level Up!
Post by: AA on December 03, 2009, 10:04:49
It's a nice little 2D platforming Flash game with lo-fi graphics, which, in substance, has you controlling a girl who has to collect red gems scattered around the world.

The distinguishing feature of the game, as suggested by the title, is leveling up your abilities by simply performing actions in-game: running a lot will make you run faster, jumping often will make you jump higher and reach new places, and so on. There are lots of stats to level up, and also special abilities ad power-ups to acquire by using the gems you've collected. You don't have any weapons, and can only avoid the enemies around you.

There's a twist to the game mechanics however: when the day ends, the girl goes to sleep, and has to "fight" a powerful enemy, and if she loses, all her levels will drop back to 1. Checkpoints and % of explored map will however be recorded, together with the log of all places she's been to and people she's met. Getting 100% completion will net you a demo of the sequel, which is a different kind of game.

The story is cheesy in my opinion, but that doesn't detract from the gameplay.

Two things:

1. You need screenshots. (http://nifflas.ni2.se/forum/index.php?topic=490.0)
2. Is anybody else having trouble with using the spacebar in this game?  Each time I use it, I can't use it again until I renew focus (click out of the flash game and then back in).

Edit: 20 days after writing this, I just tried this game again today, and found out about the C key (which shares the same function as Space).

Yeah, which would be fine if they told us how you could damage it. <_<

1. Thanks for the heads-up
2. But you don't need to use the space bar in the game, am I missing something?

The author said that it's supposed to be extremely hard to beat (haven't beaten it myself, the falling rocks are so random), so it's kind of expected to lose your powers every day; but you get extra time each day, so it's not that problematic.

The boss, and the fact that the game restarts if you dont beat him, are disturbing. I lowered his HP by (accidentally) hitting him with those rocks that are fallin down

This was fun, but the ending sequence came out of nowhere. :/

The boss is easy, stop complaining. Just make sure you level everything to 5 and get all skills.

I guess they're complaining about the first (few) encounter(s): there's no way you're going to make it right away, and facing such an overwhelming opponent with no warning and with such a penalty for losing... it can put people off. I liked the idea once I realized the penalty wasn't all that bad.

The ending was horrible, but the gameplay and graphics were excellent. I can't wait to play the sequel,

Why put that in a spoiler? The name of the sequel is in the game's description.

I found a better explanation for the boss damaging thingy:
