Development Showcase / Pick Yer Poison vs. the World (parody poster)
« on: November 30, 2010, 10:35:30 »
I made this for my 1000th post on TheOne's Minecraft community's forum.

From left to right and top to bottom: BrickWolf, Horrible, Ranavalona, Kevin_28, MindCrafty, Malcovent, KingSam, PickYerPoison (first skin I made), PickYerPoison (second skin I made)

You can see the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World movie poster I based it off of here.

It took me all afternoon to make this. X.x

Great Art is a community-created level. Each person who contributed made an exhibit; some made multiple ones. See the first post of the Great Art thread for more information.

Download from KnyttLevels

Posting screenshots wouldn't help you know what the level is like, since every part of it came from a different person. It would only spoil the exhibits.

Collaborations / Encyclopedantic
« on: May 07, 2010, 06:24:44 »
*ahem*

Encyclopedantic (found here) is a game involving a wiki, and anyone who likes to make up bullshit while staying within simple guidelines should consider it.

Each player takes the role of a scholar working on a knowledge database. You are crank, irritable, and don't think much of the other scholars on the team; however, you are all honest scholars and will stick to the facts, as defined by previous entries.

There are currently three people playing (myself being one of them). I highly encourage everyone to check it out. If you want to join, simply make a post on the MSPA Forum in the thread I've linked to up near the top, and Mr. Eldritch (our GM) will happily receive you as a new scholar.

The wiki we're working on is the Terraprime Historical Wiki. The only page I have written so far is the one on Bioware Enhancements, although to be fair I've been on the team for less than a week so far.

Made for SecretGlitch's 2-screen wide KS Competition.

This level is short (as in a few minutes of gameplay short), and focuses on small, contained environments instead of one continuous theme for the whole level. In accordance with the competition rules, there is also a light challenge element, but even the worst League of Crap Players member should be able to breeze by it.

The level can be found here.

So Basically--
It has been nearly two years since I started thinking about this project but until now I'm really taking it into full action.
The thing with 'Great Art' is that it's a community collaboration meaning alot of people work on it, something like gaia if you've ever heard of it.

General concept--
The idea here is to successfully design a level which has custom tilesets, custom music and custom objects. From here we can go into more detail. This level is basically an artistic theme where we have different people from the community (nifforumers!) participate in making screens for the level, I hope this isn't too complicated. This level consists of two areas, on the right the art exhibit (made entirely on singly designed screens for the purpose of looks) and on the left the exhibit (An exhibit of screens all made by the same participant). I guess I'm going to have to go into further basic design and rules.

Explaining the design theme and how it works--
So basically I get requests from people who would like to participate in the project and I send them the link (or you in any case). When the participant receives the link what they should do is, (1) Install the level, you will find the already finished screens, (2) begin adding onto the level by either making a 1 screen piece or an up to 12 screen exhibit, (3) finish what they are doing and send it back to me in no longer than 3 days.

I'm going to have to go into further depth on what to do when you get the level in the sense of designing, look at this picture:
This shows that you design the art exhibit screens to the right and the exhibits to the left, the highlighted screen is the starting point. I'll further explain in a PM to participants and hand you the link to the level, for now I'm just making sure it operates properly.

Explanatory pictures:-

Spoiler: (click to show/hide)
The above one is the starting room, the below one is one of the screens I made with a description.

(Issues regarding the credits)
Please remind me to put your name into the credits until giving to someone else, this is my responsibility and I really need to do it, unless you're willing to put it in yourself.
(Issues regarding non-acceptance of screens or exhibits)
If for any reason I can't except your screen or exhibit due to malfunction in the music files, tilesets or custom objects or objectionable content I only have the choice to either give you another 3 days to fix it or hand an earlier version of the project without your screens on it to someone else.

If you have any questions about this project please ask.

Don't forget to volunteer!

Note: 10/6/09, Sorry for being gone so long and not getting much done with the project, It's been exam week and a rough week too, tomorrow is the last day so I'll start getting contributors this Wednesday.
20/6/09:- Pick yer Poison has contributed.
Note: 1/16/10 It's been loads of months and I didn't do much. Pick yer poison volunteered to take the project into his own hands so I gave it to him and now he's the moderator of it.

Sweeeet. Thanks!

I'm going to mainly stick with the rules that Soron estabilished for this, since they don't really have many holes in it. I'd like volunteering to be posted in the forum so as to make figuring out who volunteered first and such easier, although the submissions themselves will be distributed via PM. When giving me a submission, I also want you to tell me what tileset numbers you used; I will make a .txt file of which tilesets are being used to include with the level so that nobody ends up screwing up someone else's exhibits by removing their tilesets. You may only write over a tileset if it's not already listed as being used. And when overwriting default tilesets, please use common sense. If possible, try to overwrite the less useful tilesets.

Also, when making a submission, I expect every exit but one (at the opposite end as the entrance) to be closed. This may seem like common sense, but there's already an existing exhibit which showcases this. *glances at Soron* And needless to say, it should be impossible to die, not counting Ctrl+R, obviously.

Submissions are: CLOSED

If you have any questions about this project please ask.

Don't forget to volunteer!
You may do so as many times as you want, as long as each exhibit you make is separate. Those who haven't volunteered previously will be chosen over those who already have.

Within a Deep Forest 2

Before you ask, yes, there was already a topic about this. However, it had a really bad title, was filled up with a bunch of unrelated stuff (since it started out as something else), and the person who started it vanished about a month ago with nary a trace. And yes, I do have permission from Nifflas to do this. I PMed him asking if he would rather I not do it, and he responded, "Ah, no! I've never been against fangames :)"

Any questions may be directed towards me either via this thread, PM, or IRC.

IRC
If you're planning on helping out, please meet up with us on IRC at least once a week. If you have a standalone IRC client (like mIRC), type in "/server irc.esper.net" followed by "/join #WaDF2". If you're using niffchat, just type "/join #WaDF2". Or if you have an IRC client that can use it, just click this link: irc://irc.esper.net/WaDF2

Applying
NOTE: The only people who will need GM Pro (or Game Maker at all, for that matter) are any programmers. Having at least the Lite version and knowing the basics is a plus, though.

Tileset, background, and music designers:
Just put something up that you think might fit, and me and OSad will judge it. We may from time to time also request a tileset, background, or piece of music that fits a specific style.

Level designers:
First and foremost: if you have an idea for a level, make sure it has a purpose, usually getting you a new ball skin. We don't want pointless levels that serve no purpose.

Also, vague ideas for levels are a big no-no. We don't want ideas; we want levels. Make at least a general map of the level, for example a black and white image file where each black pixel represents a solid wall. It will also help you to know that there are 25 rows and 20 columns of tiles in each room. Then, if/when we approve your map, you can go ahead and make a more detailed version. This is where it could come in handy to have Game Maker and a basic knowledge of it, because then you could put your level into it directly, which makes things easier for everyone.

Programmer(s):
YOU MUST HAVE GAME MAKER PRO 8 OR HIGHER TO BE A PROGRAMMER

In addition to being able to code the equivalent of every drag and drop button's function, you will also need be able to work with the following things:

    * Views
    * Activating/deactivating instances
    * Loading resources from a file
    * All types of variables, including strings
    * Reading and writing from text files
    * Essentially all of the existing commands (except for 3D and multiplayer)

I will hopefully be making a test for would-be programmers to take, but you may apply before I publish it.

Something I've noticed about the forum icons is that while the default icons let you see when there are new messages in a forum, the icons for the threads about Nifflas' games don't.

What I'm talking about is how in the forums with the default icon set, a forum with no new replies looks like :a1:, while one with new replies shows up as :a2:. This makes it easy to see when there are new comments.

However, with the forums about Nifflas' games (e.g. Night Game, Knytt, #ModArchive Story, etc.), the images are static; they remain the same regardless of whether or not there are new replies. It may just be me, but I find it tiring to have to open up each of them when I want to see if there are any new posts, as opposed to being able to see at a glance. It frankly deters me from them all together.

Now what I'm proposing (and I admit that I have no idea what kind of work this would entail), is that the icons for the games forums are set up to show whether there are any new replies. I'm not asking for brilliant sprite work or image changes; a semitransparent colored overlay is fine. Again, I don't know what this would require, so if it would be far more trouble than it's worth, I'll trust your judgement.

Knytt Stories Level Releases / [Environmental][Small] Darkness
« on: July 18, 2009, 12:22:49 »
That's right, I made another level already! :D Darkness is a small level which is Environmental, but be warned there are a couple tricky jumps in it. It also has endings. Two, to be precise. The story is never explained; I personally have no idea what the heck's going on. What the endings mean is up to you.

A word of warning: this game features an anti-cheating security system. I'm not even kidding. Just you try. :shifty:

Also, some of the images in the screenshots may seem hard to see, but trust me when I say they are clearer when you play the level, especially if you play it in full screen.

EDIT: Fixed a void screen.
EDIT 2: Fixed a game-breaking bug.

In a level I'm developing, the player at one point has to flip a switch, and this permanently changes one section of the entire level. I didn't want to have to copy every screen over again (so that there are two versions of the level: one without the change, and one with it), so I planned on using a flag warp. That worked, but the problem came with the warp from the changed area to the main area. It didn't work at all. <_< I kept getting a void screen, except, oddly enough, for the first time I went through the warp (first time per game). Also, it usually works in the level editor. So I tried making a room after the nonfunctioning warp room that was filled with shifts, which would then warp the player to the correct place. That didn't work either, although again it usually works in level editor. Please help! If I can't get this to work, the level will probably take at least twice as long to make, because I'll need to copy a ton of screens.

Level preview topic is here.

Well, it's done. I really don't have much to say. Screens and download link are below.
EDIT: Outer Reaches, my first level, is a large-size environmental level I created over the course of about a month and a half, and the end result weighs in at over 300 screens, with more than 15 secret screens to boot. The story was tacked on at the last minute, so don't expect anything exceptional there. :P There is also no "Win" tile, so if you don't find one, don't worry about it (there's something else that counts as signalling the end of the game, though). Likewise, there are no powerups within the world; Juni has everything she needs from the start. I hope you enjoy it! :D

Development Showcase / My varied music
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:20:37 »
Well, since it seems that more and more topics are showcasing music, here's some of mine.

Some of the songs have names like "boss1," "level1," etc. That's because I was planning to use them for a music-based shmup that I ended up largely abandoning a week or so into production. <_< Just so you know why I never bothered to give them proper titles.

About Nifflas' Website and Forum / Cannot edit posts (solved)
« on: June 26, 2009, 22:31:29 »
A little while ago, in a thread I'm involved in, I needed to modify my post to change a link to point to a more recent version of my program. When I finished quick editing my post, it gave me the green loading bar at the top of the screen (the one it gives before it finishes). It was still there after a few minutes, so I went off to get something to eat. When I came 20 minutes later, it was still there, and no apparent progress had been made. So I canceled the change, and then used the "Modify" button to do a full edit. But after I finished and tried to save the edits, the computer sat there for about 10 minutes with the status bar (at the bottom) showing a loading bar. Then out of nowhere, it switched to a blank screen with this text:

Database Error: MySQL server has gone away.
File: /home/nitwose/public_html/nifflas/forum/Sources/Subs.php
Line: 2496

I tried again, but the same thing happened. Does anybody know what happened and maybe how to fix it?

Development Showcase / Isometric Building Creator
« on: June 26, 2009, 06:30:20 »
Hey there! I finally got a bit exasperated at how much time creating isometric pixel art buildings took, so like any good programmer, I designed a program to do it for me! :P I thought I'd share it here. So here it is! (Press F1 for help)
Spoiler: Changelog (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Demonstration (click to show/hide)
Of course, one thing that you need to remember is that something like this will never be able to compare to an isometric pixel art building done by hand by someone good. But it helps to provide a framework!

EDIT: The Isometric Building Creator is now on YoYoGames! Stop in, drop me a comment, and most importantly, rate!
