Also remember when making an environmental entry not to include challenges. Meanies in places the player can't reach are OK, as are easy jumps over water, but elements that are designed in the hope the player will die there are not.I'm requesting that you add stuff like mazes, puzzles, etc. to that requirement. Evironmental is environmental and nothing else, and environmental levels with challenges are a pet peeve of mine.
I can also be a judge, although I might participate once or twice, in which case I'd sit out on the judging for that round. :)That would be great, but I don't have enough time to PM you right now. Not until this evening, when my brother gets off the computer.
What about themed levels? No theme? Just hard challenge?
Every 3 weeks, I will choose a category and difficulty of level, as well as the minimum number of screens that level must be. Then I will pick the winner out of all the levels submitted.
I've got an idea: the winner gets to choose the next category(s), AND their level is the basic build for the next competition, where you ADD more stuff to it. Eventually, we can make a totally AWESMOE level this way. However, this will only be applied to levels of the same category. SO, when someone starts an environmental competition, they will begin a new level entirely, but once it shifts back to this hard challenge level, we would continue off this build.Nah. Its a good idea, but lets keep this thread a level competition, and not a community level.

But if all the entries for one round absolutely suck, you'll have a big chunk of meh in the middle of an otherwise ok level. Maybe not even that.I've got an idea: the winner gets to choose the next category(s), AND their level is the basic build for the next competition, where you ADD more stuff to it. Aah, but you see... this ISN'T JUST a community level, nor is it JUST a competition. It combines the two, with several different outcomes as each part is added.
Wha? This thread is just a competition. And let's end it at that.
I'm in. Can there be multiple entries?
I may do this, not sure. Oh, and to clarify, it's already started right? I could start making it now?
What about themed levels? No theme? Just hard challenge? :huh:Doesn't that kind of limit creativity a bit?
Mostly nothing. Not now anyways. :PWhat about themed levels? No theme? Just hard challenge? :huh:Doesn't that kind of limit creativity a bit?
No. What is wrong with you?
What's the point with the competition if you just do a level. Like um.. You enter the competition, you can just do a level any day. I mean, it wouldn't be much of a competition if it's just do a level.Yes it would. Thats the whole beauty of it. Anyone can make a level. That is easy. However, its much harder to make a good or original level.
You say it would limit the creativity but no. If we have a word like "flower" for example, would you think everyone would make the same kind of level? NO!When did I ever say that all levels would be the same, or even similar? That was not my point at all.
Yes it would. Thats the whole beauty of it. Anyone can make a level. That is easy. However, its much harder to make a good or original level.
you need to make a level that somehow relates to flowers.
I agree with Salmoneous to an extent. A broad category like flowers doesn't limit creativity very much. Otherwise it would be a make a level compo. so long as the category isn't something like: Your level must be exactly 28 screens, each with a bigger and bigger flower in them, I don't think anything would be wrong.Indeed. Nothing would be wrong with that.
And that is exactly why its a good competition, silly. Only the really good levels win.Now you lost me. When was it about that anyone can make a bad level? A bad level wouldn't win the competition.
All I'm saying is that its more limiting to have a theme for the competition, not that it is bad.
And that is exactly why its a good competition, silly. Only the really good levels win.
What's the point with the competition if you just do a level. Like um.. You enter the competition, you can just do a level any day. I mean, it wouldn't be much of a competition if it's just do a level.Which I interpret as "Its easy to just make a level. Its not much of a competition then.", to which I respond something like "But its hard to make good levels, so this is a great competition."
What is not to understand?
Can you re-use COs from a previous (non-)entry
- Your level must be started while the contest is going on. That means no entering levels you worked on for months before the competition but just now finished, levels you never released, or your levels from the old forum. Part of the challenge is that there is a time limit, and it wouldn't be fair to those who are making levels just for the competition if someone has 100 screens already done beforehand.
What about a cutscene, such as that of the regular ending of The Machine?
- A win tile should be accessible in the map, unless the map is a playground, in which case a win tile should not be present.
Is this dead? Just one round. Well, I guess it's to be expected.Eek, I forgot about this thing. I think I'll call a new round, since Dandelion hasn't been on since May. This round, create a level that revolves around Contrast. This should be interpreted as duality, black vs. white, etc., and can be represented however you please, as long as it's noticable. The level should be, ideally, at least 10 screens long. The level can be of any category and difficulty. All levels will be due by...let's say February 10th, 2010.
Can you re-use COs from a previous (non-)entryYes.
What about a cutscene, such as that of the regular ending of The Machine?Yes, but there should be a win tile at the end. The point of that rule is to signal a precise moment when the game ends. If you want a cutscene like The Machine's, you can remove all scenes from your ending cutscene folder (but leave the folder there) and then make the win tile lead to that cutscene. It will end the level without making a classic-style cutscene.
You're writing 2 dates here. Can you clarify which date you want to be counting? 10th or 12th?Whoops, I wrote the twelfth the second time. That should be the tenth. Fixed, and thanks.
My entry will force the use of my KS mod. (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2458) Okay? [/ShamelessSelfPromotion]As long as I can play it, it's fine by me. :)
...assuming anyone's even doing anything for this... <_<I'm trying to make my level, but I found one bug in my KS mod, and that led to another, and that etc..
Ouch. >.< Maybe you should jst make your level in the normal KS?...assuming anyone's even doing anything for this... <_<I'm trying to make my level, but I found one bug in my KS mod, and that led to another, and that etc..
Problem is that my level practically revolves around that mod. And I don't have time to change it. I suppose now this thread will die for sure after two unsuccessful comps.Ouch. >.< Maybe you should jst make your level in the normal KS?...assuming anyone's even doing anything for this... <_<I'm trying to make my level, but I found one bug in my KS mod, and that led to another, and that etc..
I'm trying to make my level, but I found one bug in my KS mod, and that led to another, and that etc..Hey, Purple Pineapple. Guess what!
Making it appear as though there's only one screen through use of shifts is absolutely not allowed! How about the exact opossite? Making it belive there are few rooms via warps but only being one screen.
How about the exact opossite? Making it belive there are few rooms via warps but only being one screen.
Warps are fine (as long as they simply wrap the screen around), but you can't possibly expect to fool anyone into thinking there are several screens.I need to remove a key in my level. Actually, 4 keys. Could I use a duplicate screen or completely blank screen to do that or is that illegal?
wait whatThe fact that you started a new round right after the one I started failed, and told me it was "painfully obvious that you people cannot run a competition."
what makes you think i am not/was not aware of that
what
...what
No offense, but it's painfully obvious that you people cannot run a competition. (Neither can I.)Pay attention to the bolded words.
The fact that he ran a new round right after the one I ran failed makes it a bit more insulting, even if he did say he couldn't run one either. :/No offense, but it's painfully obvious that you people cannot run a competition. (Neither can I.)Pay attention to the bolded words.
Deadline is February 18.
Well...sorry.Meh, I overreacted, I'm mostly at fault here. I was just a little annoyed that my round didn't work out (and then Purple Pineapple was fine for your new round despite having had an "unfixable" problem before :|). At any rate, I'm assuming I'm still a judge? Unless there aren't any judges for this one, or if you want new ones.
Klamrisk's entry was by far the most interesting, and it actually had one real, reasonably difficult puzzle! Unfortunately, it was, y'know, one day late, so I can't give it the prize.Who what where? Oh.....
I guess Purple Pineapple still wins, then, unless PYP objects. (Pardon me for not making a complicated and horribly overdramatized buildup to that statement.) While the level was (deliberately) butt-ugly, it at least actually had a puzzle element in it, though not much of one.I would actually purport that Purple Pineapple's was the better one. The only thing that makes it a contest between that and Klämrisk's entry is the lack of a background in Purple Pineapple's. I agree with your decision on Yohji's level, though.
yohji's wasn't really a puzzle, just trial-and-error with shifts.

Has this mean dat der not be no more compo? Cans I maek one? I actually have planned ONE for a long time XDHmm, I may participate in this. This will be my first level in quite a while.
If I can, check this:
You can use ANY tileset.
This level has to have THREE endings.
It must be CHALLENGE.
It must have more then FIVE screens.
Deadline is March 5th.

Well here we go:Adventure Game Studio forums? I might have been. I use this username everywhere. Although if the capitalization was the way you said it (i.e. "Pick yer poison") it definitely wasn't me; I either capitalize all the words or none of them (usually the former).
Made in two days with not a lot of free time. But considering that, I think it turned out pretty well :P2
Download by pressing this oddly colored text (http://knyttlevels.com/levels/Bulbapuck%20-%20Bulba%27s%20compo%20entry%20no%201.knytt.bin)
My first time using knyttlevels.com too so I hope it works.
Completely off topic: I recognise your name Pick yer poison, are you a member of the ags forums?
Looks like I just missed this competition. Looking forward to the next. I'm brewing a big complex level and it would be good to stretch my legs and get my feet wet with competition. Please bring it on!
Just TRIED to play your stage bublapuck. Nope, can't do that. If you can play through that, I solute you as having the superior nervous system (perhaps just patience?) of the two of us.
EDIT: seeing that I'm the only participant, I won right? 8DSeems to happen all too often with these competitions.
Aaaaallllriiiiggghhhttt... I'm totally new, so I've got few conceptions of how to do a puzzle, but I will indeed figure it out.
Ok, so to clarify, is the standard puzzle of "I can't get there from here until I get X power up" considered a puzzle?I wouldn't personally consider that to be a puzzle, to me a puzzle is something you have to think a bit about. But if you consider that to be a puzzle, go for it :)

Huh, someone updated in this.
Well, I suppose if it's still going on, you can try my level in this contest too.
Knytt stories level competition!
Deadline: March 21st
Here are the rules:
- The level will be about Juni being trapped somewhere and is trying to get out
- The level must feature at least one puzzle element. How you choose to interpret this is up to you.
And that's it. It seems the last one was approx. 2 weeks so this one is too.
Good luck!
My level is now up at the archive! Which Way Out? (http://knyttlevels.com/levels/the%20Jack%20-%20Which%20Way%20Out%20v1.0.knytt.bin) v1.0 It was done (enough that I quit fiddling with it & started trying to upload it) before midnight. If the uploading delay knocks it out of the competition... well, I had a lot of fun making it, at least.
If any contestants voted, discount it, because really, each one would vote for their respective entry so it really doesn't make a difference.
So wait, is it the unwritten rule that the winner makes the next contest? Or was it anyone, and those anyones happened to be the winners? It's kind of an unwritten rule, yeah.
Alright, here's what I came up with.
Rules:
- It must be a challenge level of any difficulty.
- The level cannot be wider than 2 screens.
I'll give more time on this one, so the deadline is April 15.
To be clear, I assume we're not aloud to warp going left and right to lower or higher y pos on the level, yes? Cuz, you know, otherwise what would be the point on two screen width? You steal my idea. >(
may i enter this competition, i have an idea on a level.
may i enter this competition, i have an idea on a level.Sure. You have about a week now. :D
If worse comes to worse I can extend the due date a little I guess. Seeing as Purple Pineapple is getting an accidental 3-day penalty.I was actually churning out screens at a fair rate. I may be able to finish in time. (:
Only the tenth and you guys are already finished?Mine is only a few minutes long. XD
Only the tenth and you guys are already finished?
Played both current entries. I'm trying to reserve my comments till the end, but Middle of Nowhere is not a bad challenge, Yohji. :)
Only the tenth and you guys are already finished?
BEHOLD! The BLUE HOUSE!Really nice level as far as atmosphere is concerned. But OH MY GOD WOULD IT KILL YOU TO PUT SOME SAVEPOINTS IN? Especially in the outer wall climb.
9_9 I thought you wanted a 'Challenge.""Challenge" does not necessarily mean "hair-pullingly frustrating." But I haven't played your level yet so I'm not going to judge it until I do. X3
Yep. Multiple screen challenges are a lot more frustrating than shorter ones over one or two screens. That just gave me an idea for my level! Thanks.
I'll try to explain why.
If you think about it, it isn't actually any harder to do a lot of semi hard challenges than it is to do one really hard one.
The only real difference is the sense of progression.
Getting through several screens with challenges is more frustrating than getting through just one, because it takes more time, and doesn't let the player progress through the level any faster than single screen challenges. Loosing while trying to do that feels like a bigger setback than if you loose in a single screen challenge, but the sense of progression is roughly the same because you only moved one save point forward.
NOTE: My level will be best played in my KS mod as of now.
One [search]s for mod in the Nifflas Sources board (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?board=34) by user Purple Pineapple (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?action=profile;u=80), and one finds this thread. (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2458) :P
Technically, though you could play in normal KS, but my mod will "enhance" the experience, with the release of the newest version. ;)
Im not going to finish the level in time :(
But i will release the level once it is done
If worse comes to worse I can extend the due date a little I guess.

I may end up having needed those three days. Could we possibly have an extension?
Sure.
This contest will now be over on April 18.

I can't do it. I almost had it finished, but I just don't have the ability to pull another all-nighter. So, here it is. No music, no ending, no nothing. I don't even feel like compressing the level right now. So you'll get it and the latest KS ACO version in about 12 hours. I do have some screenies, though.
I have to go somewhere soon. I don't think I'd have enough time to finish. Not that I'd win anyway.
You can get the level now. (http://www.fintmcwells.com/NiffForum/KSACO/Purple%20Pineapple%20-%20Width2.knytt.bin) I'm still waiting for the latest KS ACO to upload, but you can play the level in regular KS at the moment.Edit: Oh. I neglected to mention that all the tilesets used are free to use provided you give credit.
Out of curiosity, how many points did mine earn? :3
I'm not expecting a very high number, so don't worry about offending me. XD
Specifics: In every screen, you must have Tileset A selected to the Beach and Cave Tile set. Why? There is no difference between tileset A and B.
Why? There is no difference between tileset A and B.
Can you upload the tileset, assuming Paul's OK with it? That way anyone who doesn't have it can get it.
Beat ya to it. :PCan you upload the tileset, assuming Paul's OK with it? That way anyone who doesn't have it can get it.Um...Sure, go for it. >_> So...Does anyone KNOW Paul?
I am soooo in. Is there a topic for this comp yet?
Tileset B can be anything you want, including an altered Tileset
I've played more than a few KS levels that have had me wanting to get drunk, though for rather different reasons than you two are mentioning.
Edit: Now available. I had this done hours ago, but my Internet connection is down. I'm in a park with free wifi as the sun is rising.
and who dies when they touch water? My Knytt Stories mod (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=2458) has the ability to fix that. [/shamelessselfpromotion]
How do you feel on multiple entries?
It's after midnight here, so I guess the 2 entries I have are all there will be. I have one from Healy and one from Vegetal Gibber. I will start playing them now, and post the results later today.
Yohji, are you still interested on finishing your real-life themed level? It'd be a shame if it was never released, even though egomassive's competition ended.
Actually, you're second. But I don't give bonus points for being the first, so it's okay :PWhaaaaaaat? *sad look*
I really did not expect to get so many points for that level.Spoiler: Hippopotomus (by Purple Pineapple) (click to show/hide)
You you think you could possibly elaborate on these a bit more in the main thread (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=3544)? I'm not quite sure what you're talking about..Spoiler: The Great Cat Hunt (by Purple Pineapple) (click to show/hide)

I'm pretty sure Vegetal Gibber won competition 8.Quite right, my mistake.
I'm pretty sure Vegetal Gibber won competition 8.Yeah, or else he wouldn't have judged competition 9. :P2
Yes, this competition is about motion. Any kind of motion you like, as long as it works.Spoiler: Additional rules, because I felt like it (click to show/hide)
WIN Tile: Do you mean that the win tile must be at the start of the level. There must be a path to it from the start of the level
Yellow Key and Umbrella: Are you saying that you can't start with those items or are you saying that you can't use these items. Period. You can't start with them.
Lunatic Level: My levels too hard for you X-PNo, rather I don't want to have to play through a lunatic level just to grade it. Very hard levels are still ok.
For the theme of the competition (Motion), Would an example be like motion sickness, could you give an example.Well, one example would be keeping the player in constant motion, like Timo Maas and the like. Another would be motion through space. As long as the level shows some kind of motion it's fine. Remember, you get bonus points for being more clever with the theme.

Basically, you won't grade something hard like "The Ventilation Shaft" ( X)).Basically.
I think you forgot to set a deadline for this competition.No.. I just forgot to tell you that deadline. I'll edit the contest post.
Some of those rules just seem silly...for example, why require us to use specific shifts? You can't even see that without the level editor, since they all behave the same. Same for the warp object in the bottom right bit. It's because I'm mean.
I thought it was a great idea for a competition. I had a great idea for a level too, but I told myself that I couldn't start any new levels until I finished Shipwrecked.You. Finish Shipwrecked.
I still intend to finish and post my level, I just suck at deadlines. <_<And you. If you finish a level for this contest, I would love to see it (I may even give you a prise, despite it being over.)
I had an idea for a contest: surprise/plot twist.
The idea would be to make a level with at least 1 surprise/plot twist, with bonus points for extra ones.
By surprise/plot twist I mean anything where you convince the player one thing is going to happen, and then something different happens. This could be going to shut the Machine off only to find it is destroyed, and evidence leads to something else sucking life, or starting in a dessert looking for water, only to find the dessert is encased in glass in the middle of a rain forest.
I thought we were going with Headgrinder's comp..
i heard it was going to be a public vote. Is it too late now?Do you mean a vote on the submitted levels or on which contest we do?
i heard it was going to be a public vote. Is it too late now?Do you mean a vote on the submitted levels or on which contest we do?
I think we meant a public vote for who is the winner.Well, My mistake... I just thought it was for that because Purple pineapple competition got cancelled.
I like your idea though. I've actually had several ideas for comps I wish I had posted because I've totally forgot them now.
Well, My mistake... I just thought it was for that because Purple pineapple competition got cancelled. It didn't get cancelled. It ended. No one entered. :P
I like your idea though. I've actually had several ideas for comps I wish I had posted because I've totally forgot them now. :sick:So.. we're doing Peppy's comp?
So.. we're doing Peppy's comp?
Well now, I didn't say that. Just said I liked the idea. Anyhow, Bulbapuck is the one who has already started a level for the comp I suggested, so I would think you'd need to ask him before pulling the plug.

It's fine by me, I'm still working on the tilesets for the level and I've started working on my FiNCK level again as well, so that's also distracting. So I don't think I could have finished on time anyway :)
I would appreciate a new deadline... It seems like it would be fair, since it sounds like no one was working before today.
I move into my college dorm soon, so things will get very busy for me soon... I dunno if I can finish the level before then (even though I've made really great progress just today. An extra week or two would make me feel a lot better.
Thank you! It'll be great =] It's my first level! And after a brief troubleshooting and problemsolving bit on niffchat, it seems I'm well on my way.
I am finished! What is the etiquette on how to post an entry?Nonexistent. Post it any way you want. :P
Good, one person finished. Just give me a PM with the level.Ah, don't you think other people should get to play it too?
do i need to keep this G rated??
The hardest part of this competition will be knowing what hasn't been done. There are thousands(?) of Knytt Stories levels. Who knows what they all contain? I have a great idea, but I've too many projects in the works already --including my entry for the last competition.
i had a list of criteria for scoring but i assumed the forum saved my outgoing PMs. it doesn't.
therefore dave will be listing this
It could be something like Pro Umbrella Jumping or maybe an obstacle course where you have to float on updrafts a lot.
total: 8 points
i think dave's going to find it difficult to give any marks however, you've done none of the things he's asked for. you may need to rely on "communal love", which sounds gross
it may even vary for each person!
Flags - 10 points - use flags instead of keys.
Yohji: 6/10 I like to think that's how the knytt world ended after the demonic fishes (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=1414.msg15210#msg15210) got out of the water.
Just played Yohji's game. I thought it was quite cool - you did a lot with a little. Updrafts were perfectly placed for smooth movement. Seems like a cool environment for some kind of puzzle...
Dangit, there goes my five-point-lame-ass-ending bonus :(
You get the coveted “You killed my dog” BONUS NEGATIVE 7 MULTIPLIER! Giving a grand total of -56 points
Perhaps "Caevstroy can suck on it" parts 2 to 30 will be received more positivelyWe can only hope.
Take Away Powers (5) - 3 - You used a flagoff for the blur mode section. Again, didn't really add to the gameplay (for me).You didn't look close. He used flagoff to make umbrella stuck - that's something worth 6 points out of 5 IMO! 6.09 to be precise :D
I love this theme so I'm going to participate in this for the first time C)That's fine; whatever floats your boat :p
Editing for one quick question: Is it okay if it is neither challenge nor puzzle? I think what I'm planning will be categorized as miscellaneous.
No i mean, what is the wittgenstein quote you're referring to? i meant just a quote from me about the level. YOU FOOL YOU ARE MISQUOTING ME!! I WILL KILL YOU!! WITH A ACXE!
I am not sorry this took so long to complete. I am adamant! I was fine-tuning it and decided that ultimately, god is a giant pinata, which is empty. This might be my penultimate work. I think Wittgenstein would be proud, were he not a drunkard! And also deceased.
P.S. here is a background I ultimately cut from the level (http://www.glorioustrainwrecks.com/files/kslevelbg.jpg). Consider it bonus material!
Here i leave you with a quote from Rhetoric Stu, even if he was rude to me, nevertheless he said "It is the most futile metaphor about beauty! For it was Wittgenstein who wrote: Your face!"
By the way, anyone else entering this month?
Anyone else smell a troll? Or at the very least a definite air of idiocy.
has anyone seen sergio? he's missing and we're starting to worry
Urban Environments are settings I'd like to see more of in Knytt Stories, so let's make that the theme of the new competition. Cities, towns, sewers, even municipal buildings, all of that and more can be the setting of your entries.
My scoring breakdown:
Use of Theme: How well did you use the theme "Urban Environments?" (scored out of 10 points)
Playability: Are there any glitches in your game, gamebreaking or otherwise? Is the game a smooth experience, for the most part, or is it a walking pile of frustration? (scored out of 10 points)
Ear/Eye Candy: How well did you use the tilesets (and custom objects if you have them) in your game? Are the music choices you made appropriate? (scored out of 10 points)
Fun Factor: How enjoyable is it to play your level? (scored out of 10 points)
Personal Preference Bonus points that I will give if I really like a level (maximum 5 points)
Deadline's Februarythe 12ththe 19th.
I also want there to be more than one entry. So I made this. 'parkour' is a level in which there is nowhere to go and nothing to achieve.
I too liked it, though I need to peek at it with the editor to make sure I didn't miss anything. Is it really that joyously short with no ending?
Extra wonderful tilesets by the way. Yours?
I can't seem to get it to work.
I can't seem to get it to work.
Strange. Are you extracting the knytt.bin before installing it?
In the event that there is only one entry, it will be forced to compete against Quest for Phallic Flora (http://www.glorioustrainwrecks.com/node/1693) in a poll on these forums.Whoa! That's a very deep philosophic level I see.
So what you're saying is, the only way we'll lose is if our level doesn't work, or if the other level is better than ours? I think you could be right.....that was obvious, was it not? I was trying to sound cocky! :P
Assume? You're the host, you decide. Do you like Coldmist Mountain more than QfPF?
@ sergiocornaga: Xoft's Level Composer (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=165.0) can automatically duplicate sections of your map including ini code.
You have 3 hours to turn something in. Otherwise sergio automatically loses.

Did you think I was serious?
I'll give one more hour before time is up.
So wish I wasn't getting our house ready for sale and getting ready to work overtime. :/
While I wait for jetio4's points, I'll announce the next competition:
SHORT TIME FRAME
Make a Knytt Stories level in a short time frame! There are no other restrictions. The due date is Friday 15 July... as far as I'm concerned, anything made between now and then is probably within a short enough time frame, but in case you feel otherwise I've set up an event for making a level in 2 hours over at Glorious Trainwrecks (http://www.glorioustrainwrecks.com/node/1790). Try to keep track of how long you take and mention it when you submit your level!
I'm in. I'm going to have my level done by tonight.Well, i now know that i have already lost this competiton... :P Later, folks.
Advanced, a short retro challenge. (http://nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=4882.0)
Can we submit more than one entry?
Try to keep track of how long you take and mention it when you submit your level!
I am now done my entry for the KS Level competition. I hope you enjoy the level...
Is it too late now? And are there any other rules besides being due today? Because if not, then I have a level to post!
This competition made me realized that it takes patience and time to make a decent level.
I thought i was just slow at making levels...
On my first playthrough I became stuck in an area from which there was no escape (even though there was a savepoint there), which was kind of annoying.
My responses to the levels and the announcement of the winner follows. Be warned that there are slight spoilers!

Advanced by SecretGlitch
The graphics and music in this level are definitely the high point and are obviously exceptionally polished. Sadly, I found the level really frustrating, but most of that is due to limitations in the built-in kill tile collision detection. You were able to achieve a lot in four hours... I'd like it a lot if you tried completing levels in a short time period more often!

Within the Treetops by PeppyHare4000
You've managed to create quite a vast level in a fairly short time period. In terms of plot, yours was my favourite of the competition. I love the two endings, in particular the differences between them as discussed in the level thread. They may be my new two favourite Knytt Stories endings full stop. There was one jump in this I was never able to accomplish, so I'm not sure what I would have done without the cheat.

"without a cause" without a cause: the non-game by rhetoricstu
This is some pretty decent metafiction. I feel like it referenced something I don't know (besides Knytt Without a Cause)... at various points I thought of Dark Star and Source Code, but I don't think it's either of those things. Let me know if the plot is original, or what it alludes to if not! However, I'm not sure I can classify this as a Knytt Stories level with a clear conscience...

Vague Feeling by Headgrinder
I highly enjoyed the art and music for this, but the level design was pretty rough. On my first playthrough I became stuck in an area from which there was no escape (even though there was a savepoint there), which was kind of annoying. I'm interested in what the story was (what was that smell?), unless you'd prefer to leave it to the imagination, of course.

The Lighthouse by Ultigonio
This has definitely been improved from the original release. I love the visual tricks, such as the lights and the fog fading in and out. The use of the fog to obscure objects is a unique touch. My one issue is that it wasn't completely clear when the key had been picked up since the sign text and shift were still there. The dynamic music you created is really nice, too. It's a shame it doesn't transition that well in the Knytt Stories engine...

Explorarium by rainulous
Your level features some of the prettiest use of the default tilesets / objects I've seen in a Knytt Stories level. Others have called the visuals bland and predictible, but I really didn't think this was the case. I loved the way you conveyed the solution to the maze. Unfortunately, there were quite a few bugs, both small graphical errors and void screens. x1005y1012 was the biggest one. Also, the extreme level of backtracking gets fairly frustrating by the end... by the time you get the eye there's very little indication that you're meant to be searching for new passages in previous areas, and the one passage you're most likely to find (x992y1003) seems to serve no purpose other than a slight annoyance.

To conclude, I'm very pleased at the variety this competition produced and I'm glad I was able to play all your levels. Although I enjoyed them all, the level I feel was best and captured the theme well was Advanced by SecretGlitch. I look forward to the competition you decide to host!
This was a long post, so apologies for any errors...
I am guessing that where you had to use the cheat was...Spoiler: (click to show/hide)
Anyways, i had a good run but i was not the winner.
Oh... that is just a very precise jump. You must jump off from the right edge just as you are about to fall to get it right.
Oh... that is just a very precise jump. You must jump off from the right edge just as you are about to fall to get it right.
Hmm, I might have been thinking about a different area. I thought maybe I was attempting it without one of the jump powerups, but I tried that now and it seems obviously impossible, whereas with both of them I can do it fairly easily. Who knows what jump I really meant? Sorry I can't remember...
either way, i am glad you liked the level but don't expect me to make my levels easier though...
New contest:
CLAUSTROPHOBIA
Deadline: Three weeks from now, August 10th.
The goal is to make a level that feels quite claustrophobic, having most of it's content occurring in very tight corridors or very small spaces.
It must be:
- A challenge of any difficulty.
- NO MAZES! The fun is making cramped obstacles!
- Fits the aforementioned theme of claustrophobia.
No other conditions beyond that. I'll judge accordingly on all other merits. Good luck!
Ah, i just had an idea for this but I doubt I'd have time to make anything now. Still, maybe I'll give it a go.
Getting interested in KS just as general interest wanes?Talps, how did you make that brick tiles on your paint program. I am not that good with brick designs...
Thanks SecretGlitch; it is nice to be recognised.
I'll announce the next competition as soon as I've thought of something. I haven't planned for this at all.
Since I'm at the hlafway point with my level, I'm going to enter the next competition.
It'll be fun.
I didn't mean I was entering my level, I meant I was taking a break from my level to make a new level for the competition.Since I'm at the hlafway point with my level, I'm going to enter the next competition.
It'll be fun.
You cannot enter levels which you have already begun...
Either make a new level or don't enter the competition...
Hum, so there's no real Journey competition?? That'd be really disappointing, because I've just spent a few days not only on thinking out a big concept, but making a complete tileset and about ten screens... of course I can release the level without a competition, but still...
Sorry guys; still no competition. I was away all weekend and I have two job interviews this week so my mind's been on other things. I'm going away for a week starting Friday, so I'll try and have something running before then. If not, two week's break may do us some good.
While it's on my mind, is the book The Little Prince well known in the US? Originally it's from France, and a classic french book.
Okay, anybody can make the competition now... First Come, First Serve!
It is good to see that somebody is making a level for this competition.
I wouldn't be surprised if the KS Level Competition wasn't getting any levels because this Forum seems to have a big decline in visitors. I am hoping that in the Christmas Holidays, there will be more activity. Otherwise, this forum's activity doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I don't like this one bit :(
Actually, I'm working on a level for this right now! Which reminds me, is it alright if I use some of your music from Nine Days? I'm especially thinking of using your drumbeat, and maybe some of the other tunes as well.
Eh. One of the rules is that the level has to be started after the start of the competition. Just saying.
I appreciate the offer Sergiocornaga. But, to be completely fair, I'll make a new level. I got the perfect idea earlier today. I'll just make a prologue to my current project, and use it to explain the back-story of the testing facility going bad (i.e. corrupt). It will fit in the competition and give my current project something to push off of! 8)
I don't get how you all complain that nobody make competition entries and forum is dead and still keep posting new competitions.
Haha, thanks! And we almost did kind of collaborate on EK3, but that fell through due to my flakiness. (Sorry.)Actually, I'm working on a level for this right now! Which reminds me, is it alright if I use some of your music from Nine Days? I'm especially thinking of using your drumbeat, and maybe some of the other tunes as well.
Of course you may! I would really like to collaborate with you properly one day, though.
I wasn't sure if I should post it in the level releases while the competition is still on.
Quick question. Egomassive pointed out a rather serious flaw in my level. (in the level releases thread) and I was wondering: Is it okay for me to update my entry before the competition is over?
How much longer do you think you'll need? In retrospect, this deadline was too close to the holiday season, so I'm probably going to give an extension.A week should probably be OK, if that's not too much to ask.
Extending the deadline is a great idea I think. Personally, I would love to see other entries for this competition.
Isn't Healy working on a level too?
Raicuparta, Healy and anyone else who might want to submit something: you have 1 hour to get those entries in!
I am forced to declare LordMarzog the winner! Run the Gauntlet: Prologue is a great level, challenging but fair in its design and featuring a plot I found genuinely engrossing. It's a shame it faced no competitors, but I congratulate LordMarzog for it nonetheless.
LordMarzog, should you so choose, you may host the next competition whenever you're ready.
I am very sorry for asking for the extra time and not submitting anyway, I'm having some problems (had my flight rescheduled, which was the source of other problems) that stopped me from finishing it. I only need 20 or so minutes to finish it now, so I'll just release it anyway. And don't feel too bad about it. Life happens and there are (shockingly C)p) more important things than Knytt Stories.
Pretty much, yeah! I'm too bad a procrastinator to trust myself to judge this.
I've managed to make a level in time :^^: See the releases board.
OK, I have level for PeppyHare4000:
-One of the wrost levels ever!
-Over 15 screens of horror!
-Hidden spikes!
-No save points!
-Default tileset!
Here is link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/6szbv5.
PS: Don't play it if you aren't PeppyHare4000.
Here is my bad level! (http://www.knyttlevels.com/levels/Sergio%20Cornaga%20-%20Juni%20Jones%20Ace%20Attorney.knytt.bin)
ixMarcel, I'm afraid I couldn't resist the urge to play your level. You are an expert of frustrating, awful gameplay.
I'm not sure what you used for the music but I recognize some of those samples from playing with a "DJ" software quite a few years ago :P
With "Single Room" you mean that the level must be one screen of size, or that the level must have a "single room" setting?
I have really enjoyed the entries so far. I can tell deciding on a winner will be tough!Yes, that's unintentional. I should have waited a bit before uploading the level, there are probably a few other mistakes, but I'm not gonna bother fixing it right now.
Raicuparta: Your level misspells bucket as buket and bucked. I assume that's unintentional?
I'd really appreciate an extra day or two so that I can get his contribution.
(Also, sergiocornaga: Were those farm animals in your Ace Attorney singing a cover of Remplissage Momentané from the original KS soundtrack?)
I have a few complaints that the only real gameplay was the repetitious fridge traveseral (but who needs jump/dodge/duck/dive/dodge to make a good game?) I think the alternate, secret paths play against the game a bit because of the repititious fridgness.I think you've missed a ?boss? fight in a cave. For me Klämrisk's level was much better than Dave's and Firecat's.
I will start a competition:
Night themed level:
*It must be enviromental level
*At least 20 screens
*Of course the level must be at night
*Custom objects are welcome (Animated stars, moon. Epic, peacefull music, etc.)
*If you still don't know what I mean - My level "Dream (http://knyttlevels.com/levels/ixMarcel%20-%20Dream.knytt.bin)" can be your inspiration.
At the moment there is no deadline. Good luck! C)
I'm wondering, would it be allowed to have night most of the level but in last screens sun rises? Like just the ending.Of course ;)
[...] they're from Widget's collection.
No. There is some archive with 100 tilesets grabbed from the old forum I've downloaded long time ago. I can't find any link to it and I don't have original archive any more, but I have them in the folder named 'Widget', so I thought it was ou who had made it.
Here's the interior tiles that go with my exterior Tundra compatible tiles which Healy posted. There was one unused tile, so I've hastily updated it with a festive tree. :) Did anyone bestow a star upon Healy? I'll do it. *gives star*
Here (http://knyttlevels.com/levels/Polana%20-%20Christmas.knytt.bin) is my entry. It deals with Czech Christmas tradition, presents are not brought by Santa Claus but by Baby Jesus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ježíšek) in the evening on 24thDecember, town is not full of Christmas lights (there should be some X-mas trees and Advent wreaths, but I didn't manage to draw them) and custom music are Czech carols.
I hope that story of this level won't offense anyone, it's all meant as a joke.
Well as I have no entries, I'm happy to wait longer. Who's working on something? How long do they need?I have a short level I can probably finish tomorrow or Tuesday. It's going to be very short, though.
I hope that story of this level won't offense anyone, it's all meant as a joke.
